at a residential treatment program for emerging adults with mental illness.

As Janet’s children grew up and her career thrived, she decided to devote her considerable energies to a few non-profits that she felt were making a lasting difference in people’s lives. She knew personally of the OSchool’s impact because of her family’s experience there, but she also knew that the organization would benefit from her professional skills at a time when it was planning for autonomy from the University of Chicago, and developing the campaign for the new building.

Janet is proud of the work that the OSchool does, noting that we can’t erase the issues each child has but we can help families access the best practices to help their children cope and thrive. The OSchool’s long history of successful outcomes are shown through each child’s ability to live independently, sustain relationships, pursue their academic and vocational goals, and become self-supporting.

Fun Fitness“Fun Fitness Movement” is the motto of the O School’s physical education program and residential after-school recreation programs. The focus of the physical education curriculum is teaching the positive benefits of functional fitness exercise programs and the positive psycho social benefits of team sport activities and group exercise programs. The diverse concerns of the students (health, emotional, and physical) are addressed through individually designed fitness programs complete with weekly assessment, healthy fitness goals, and self improvement of functional fitness skills and athletic skills.

We look forward to the grand opening this semester of the Physical Education Exercise Physiology Laboratory. Complete with state of the art treadmills, stationary cycles, and fitness microcomputers, the students will now have the ability to be monitored and assessed during exercise utilizing this latest technology. The technology and new equipment also allows for students who present with a physical disability or chronic disease to exercise with a more prescriptive and individualized plan. The primary benefit of participation in physical activity and exercise for all students is improved quality of life with respect to social, emotional, and physical well being.

Save the dateMarch 7 Spaghetti Lunch Student Council Art Sale

March 30–April 3 Spring Break

Art SaleThe OSchool Fine Arts Students are busy creating art for our annual sale. Each year at the Spaghetti Luncheon the Student Council organizes and runs a sale of unique and beautiful objects created by the students at the school. All art is donated by the students and all proceeds from the sale are donated to a charity chosen by the student council. Our lead contender this year is the organization ‘Art for Health.’

The Brooke Whitted CenterThe Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School gratefully acknowledges James and Joanne Shankman Steinback for their cumulative and lifetime support of the SSOS and its mission to provide a safe haven and path to hope for children and their families. We are pleased and honored to recognize James and Joanne Shankman Steinback for their significant commitment to supporting the strategic initiatives of the SSOS by donating 6238 S. Ellis as the future home of THE BROOKE WHITTED CENTER, a transitional living program for young adults. This initiative will help to further the continuum of services available students and families in need. You will hear more about this exciting new initiative in the months to come. If you have any questions, or wish to learn more about this program, including giving opportunities, please contact Diana Kon, Co-Executive Director of the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School, at [email protected].
