After their first year of hard work and long hours, the three chocolatiers – as they are affectionately known – want to thank their customers for their business and support. For Tyler, Eric and Austin Tschannen, being surrounded by chocolate dur-

ing 2013 was such a great experience they decided to purchase a third location! Now, in addition to their locations in Shiloh and Edwardsville, they have purchased a third store in Chesterfield, MO at 1743 Clarkson Road. “We are so grateful to our customers,” said Tyler Tschannen. “Starting our business has certainly been a challenge, but very rewarding too, and lots of fun. We now have regular customers who come in once a week or so – it’s good to see their friendly faces. Who isn’t happy when they give or receive chocolate?”

“We only want the best for our customers,” he continued. “Our chocolate is all natural, contains no artificial flavors or colors and no preservatives or hydrogenated oils. Also, we try to keep current with health trends and concerns thus many of our chocolates are gluten free. And of course we all know that recent studies have shown a little bit of dark chocolate per day provides natural antioxidants that are good for your heart.”

Their best-selling product is the two-pound Chocolate Break Up box. “I have regular cus-tomers come in for this two-pound box in dark chocolate just because of its health value,” he said. It is also available in milk chocolate.

Other than the popular retail side of the business, Tschannen has built a solid foundation for corporate business offering a variety of products for employers and employees. “The plan is to expand offerings for corporate customers to fulfill their corporate event and gift needs with our chocolate party trays and custom-made chocolate logos. We create all types of custom-made chocolate logos,” he said. “In fact, one customer wanted a choco-late corvette – we created it and he loved it!”

Brides and grooms are choosing chocolates as specially crafted table-favors for their guests. A customized chocolate covered fruit and truffle tray is the perfect centerpiece to any shower, birthday or family celebration. Selections are designed in honor of the event with colors and flavors to suit everyone’s taste.

Of course, the most popular chocolate holiday of the year is Valentine’s Day. Topping the list of customer favorites are chocolate covered strawberries, white and dark chocolate raspberry truffles, and milk chocolate or white chocolate red velvet cake truffles. “The

fruit-inspired chocolates are becoming very popular, too,” he said. “We have chocolate-covered pineapple, blackberries and cherries, plus raspberries and strawberries.”

“Every morning, we prepare our chocolate fresh,” Tschannen said. “In fact, we can create an order in as little as 30 minutes. Last minute custom orders on Valentine’s Day are chal-lenging, so come visit us in advance for your custom order. Of course we will have a large selection of boxed and specialty chocolates for you to design your own special Valentine even for our last minute customers!”

The original Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate opened in south St. Louis City on Chippewa 30 years ago. After years of studying the art of handcrafting small batches of premium chocolates, founder Dan Abel came back to his hometown of St. Louis to open his own candy company: Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate. The candy kitchen was visible through the windows of the retail store – allowing customers to see that the candy was freshly made breaking the mold of large factories and mass production.

In 2002, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Company began franchising its retail store con-cept. The franchise stores were designed to represent the original St. Louis store. Thus, Tschannen’s stores in Shiloh, Edwardsville and now Chesterfield all have a small kitchen to make fresh chocolates on the premises. This ensures that customers will receive only the freshest products.

Celebrating 25 years, the reputable Country Estate Kennel in Shiloh was born out of a great need for expert kenneling with the comforts of home. Proprietor Pa-mela Lashley and her husband, veterinarian Dr. David Lashley, had always be-

lieved their four-legged babies were an important part of the family and they wanted to provide a safe and secure boarding facility for others who felt the same way.

Apparently many area pet owners felt the same way as busi-ness has been great since the day the doors opened - and today it is booming! With her infectious smile and gracious style, Pamela Lashley is known throughout the community for her love of all animals. "People ask me all the time if I plan to continue to work but, to me, the kennel isn't just a job, it's my joy and passion," she said with her sweet smile. "I love the kennel and the interaction with my babies. Where else can you go to work and be adored all day?"

Beginning her career as a kindergarten teacher at Signal Hill School, she said she felt the same way with her young students and then her own three children. “I get that same positive feedback with the four-legged babies as the two-legged – the kennel is a wonderful place for me to be.”

The upscale Country Estate was designed to meet the specific char-acteristics of Midwest weather combined with an atmosphere of comfort and security – just like home.

“David and I met with Leonard Land, an architect in Edwardsville, who listened to what we wanted,” she said. “We wanted it to say, ‘Welcome to our home.’ After visiting many other kennels, we took all the positive elements we had seen and made our own improvements based on David’s extensive veterinary knowledge.”

Starting with 50 kennel units, they now have 200! “We have been very blessed with a wonderful and loyal clientele, and

I have to say all the veterinarians in our community have been very gracious to make referrals to our facility,” Pamela Lashley said.

“I have learned about animals really by virtue of osmosis,” she laughed, “by work-ing with my husband from the day we were married. I have him as a resource

and he is available to us 24/7 including after hours and holi-days. But if your baby comes in and I have a concern, we call

your vet first and we will transport the pet to that vet if they are open for business at the time.”

The kennel itself offers each “guest” his or her own room for sleeping, eating and relaxing. All accommodations are separated from the room next door so each pet can relax without being

disturbed by more active guests. In addition, each room has a raised bed or bedding. All interior rooms, suites and apartments are climate controlled for the pet's comfort and the outside areas are partially covered.

"In addition to a 24/7 on-call veterinarian, we are the only kennel in the area with a live in resident on the property to offer full security morning, noon, and night,” she said. “That combined with extra amenities like cushioned flooring, tempered glass

doors, fully air-conditioned and heated facilities, and touches of home like wallpaper, custom paint, music, etc. truly sets us apart from any other

kennel in the Metro East.”

Lashley said she spends much of her hands-on time with the ani-mals providing basic care like feeding, cleaning, bathing, etc. but, "it's

equally important to play with the animals and provide affection - they crave attention just like we do," she said.

“I think that extra attention makes all the difference in the world!”

Country Estate Kennel is located at 1230 Thouvenot Lane, Shiloh; (618) 632-8008; www.countryestatekennel.com.

“Live Life Beautifully”

This month is all about love. First and foremost, you have to love yourself – a new, healthier version of yourself. By making some minor changes to your food choices, you will see the number on the scale go DOWN, while your self-confidence goes UP.

Usually when we think of foods that contain sugar, we think candy or baked goods. However, foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and bread are loaded with unnecessary, refined carbohydrates, or “bad sugars.” Our body processes these bad sugars into fat (around the abdomen and hips) causing bloating, and relentless cravings - for MORE sugar!!

While our body certainly needs carbohydrates to burn as fuel, it is important to get that fuel from “good sugars” such as berries, apples and fresh veggies. If you choose pasta or potatoes as part of a meal, limit the portions and pair it with a lean protein, like fish. The goal of a meal is to eat lean (chicken or fish), leafy (salad of spinach or field greens) and colorful (lots of fresh veggies) to ensure you are getting a low-carb, low-fat, high-nutrient meal.

Within a few weeks you should start to notice a difference in your weight, how you feel and sleeping patterns. You will

also notice decreased cravings for those sugary foods. In the beginning, it might be a little challenging, but with a little

conscious effort, it will get easier each day.

Also, consider Auriculotherapy treatments. Auriculother-apy is a great support for curbing cravings. This relaxing

treatment uses microcurrents to stimulate and balance energy points along the outer ear. In addition to reducing

cravings for sweet and salty foods, Auriculotherapy has been known to aid in weight loss, smoking cessation and better sleep.

Get back to loving your body and feeling comfortable in your skin. Re-member, getting started is the hardest part. Once you make the decision to get

healthy, you will build confidence and achieve your goals. And with spring around the corner, isn’t this the perfect time to make some changes to your diet and feel good about your body?

If you have questions about healthy eating or Auriculo-therapy, schedule a consultation with Robert L. Wise, D.C., in the Wellness Center. As a Personal Trainer and Chiropractor, he can help guide you in the right direc-tion. For more information, call (618) 288.9117 or visit OohLaLaWellness.com.

Are you ready to look and feel your best in 2014? Are you finally ready to do something for yourself? If you are like millions of American women you've often thought about making a change

through cosmetic surgery or procedures. There is media hype and excite-ment everywhere, but where do you start? From websites, news, blogs, videos, infomercials, and more... what's real and what isn't?

It's easy to get wrapped up in the appeal of the ad, the "testimonials" of the infomercial or the excitement of the latest gimmick and it's promise. How do you cut through all the hype and learn what is right for you?

First, there are many quality and unbiased websites available. The Ameri-can Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (www.surgery.org) and American Society of Plastic Surgeons (www.plasticsurgery.org) websites are a great place to start. They present information in an ethical/balanced manner. Second, attend a seminar. Seminars are a great forum for you to learn more about procedures, to see real results, to get your questions answered and to hear what others have to say. Finally, speak with a board certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Ryan Diederich of MidAmerica Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Diederich is hosting an educational seminar at 6:30 p.m. on February 27. This will be an educational seminar discussing breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction and body contouring. The procedures will be explained in full detail, and before and after photos will be shown. You will be able to ask questions and to listen to others ask questions about procedures you may be considering - all in a comfortable and re-laxed environment. Learn what's new and innovative while separating gimmicks from effective treatments. Before the talk, there will also be more information on non-invasive procedures such as botox, fillers, laser hair removal and more. You can also learn more at midamericaplasticsur-gery.com or call today at (618) 288-7855.

If you are interested in attending the seminar it is important to RSVP online at midamericaplasticsurgery.com/rsvp; by email at [email protected]; or by calling (618) 288-7855. The last two seminars have been full, so RSVP today!

Thousands of people are expected to attend the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Southwest Illinois’ annual Home Show. Every

year show-goers look forward to seeing the latest products, services and ideas for remodeling, restor-ing or renewing their home. With over 100 local companies displaying everything from state-of-the-art kitchens, luxurious baths, window treatments, spas, decks, sunrooms, room additions, spectacular landscaping and much more, this makes the “Home

Show every homeowner’s dream,” said Chris Jones, event chairman of this year’s show.

The Home Show allows you to walk around at your own pace in a comfortable environment and talk to professionals one on one while viewing their product first hand. A Home Show Guide will be given to every attendee that will make it easy for you to find the professionals for which you are looking.

Make sure to view the new projects on display from the HBA Remodeler of Distinction Awards. You’ll find amazing kitchen, bathroom, waterproofing, struc-tural, exterior, outdoor living space and landscaping projects from HBA members.

Receive a $1 admission discount by bringing in a canned good to benefit the Community Interfaith Food Pantry and Faith Baptist Church Food Pantry. And save another $1 for donations of linens, toilet-ries and cleaning supplies to benefit the Violence Prevention Center. These promotions are sponsored by CertaPro Painters of Belleville, Padgett Building and Remodeling, and Light Bright Distributing.

The HBA Home Show is also extending another $1 off admission to seniors 65 and older, heroes, (fire-fighters, police officers and military), medical profes-sionals and education faculty. Thanks to our corpo-rate sponsors FCB Banks/First Co Mortgage, Jacob Sunroom and Exteriors, Helitech-Waterproofing and Structural Repair, P & A Drywall Supply and South-west Illinois Housing Advancement Fund.

The HBA Home Show will be at the Belleville Fair-grounds off Route 13 and Route 159 in Belleville. Hours are Friday, February 28, from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 1, from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; and Sun-day, March 2 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Since 1968, Hudson Tree Service has been a professional resource for tree care performed by certified arborists and highly trained crews who can help create an outdoor living environment that is beautiful,

healthy and safe.

Gene Joshu, owner and certified arborist, said that proactive tree service and preventative maintenance will actually help protect the value of one’s home. Hudson Tree Service can assist customers with immediate needs or provide a consultation to learn more.

The professionals at Hudson Tree Service will inspect your landscape, diagnose any problems, and make recommendations based upon years of experience and provide a tree service estimate at no charge. Customers are always welcome to walk along and ask questions about the condition of their trees and shrubs.

While attending Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville - where he graduated with an economics degree in 1975 - Joshu worked for the original owner of the company, John Hudson. Then, just two years after graduat-ing, Hudson sold the business to Joshu where he’s been ever since.

Located now among the rolling hills south of Belleville and east of Millstadt - just a stone’s throw from where Joshu grew up – Hudson’s has built a strong reputation for great service featuring an arborist’s knowledge and exper-tise. Specifically, an arborist is a pro-fessional in cultivation, management and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennial woody plants. Joshu and another staff member are both certified arborists.

“We will design a tree service and plant health care program that ad-dresses the specific conditions of your landscape as well as your personal preferences and eco-sensibilities,” Joshu said. “Our customers can enjoy the peace of mind and confidence that comes from working with a company that is passionate about tree service and has many credentials.”

Among the many services Hudson’s offers for residential and commercial properties are:• Tree pruning and trimming• Tree removal, take-downs and replacement of trees• Stump grinding • Planting of trees and shrubs• Disease and Insect Control on ornamental and shade trees• Emergency tree service• 14-point storm damage risk audit• Lightening protection

• Bracing and cabling

Their reputation for excellent work has given them the opportunity to become the tree

service for destinations such as The Mis-souri Botanical Garden and The Muny in

Forest Park. Many municipalities, hous-ing authorities and Scott Air Force

Base – to name a few – are among the commercial properties Hudson’s tends to in the Metro East.

Spengler Plumbing, Heating & Cooling proudly to released the “2014 Men of Spengler” calendar in January to benefit local fire departments. As part of the roll out, Spengler will be distributing $10,000 from the Spengler Everyday Hero Fund which was established through last year’s calendar.

Spengler is now asking for your help in deciding which fire departments will receive these funds. Over the next few weeks, community members will be asked to vote online for their favorite fire department. The 7 fire departments who garner the greatest amount of votes will receive a portion of these funds. The top 7 departments will receive the following grants: 1st. Place: $5000, 2nd Place: $2000, 3rd Place $1000, 4th-7th Place: $500 each.

Voting begins on January 27th and will commence on February 9th. During this time individuals may vote by visiting www.spenglerco.com. Each person will have the ability to vote up to ten times each hour. Winners will be announced on February 10th.

During the voting period, the Men of Spengler will also be making appearances in nearby communities. Coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts will be passed out to morning commuters between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. The 2014 calendar will also be available to commuters during this time.

The 2014 calendar features 18 men of Spengler enjoying what they like to do when they are not working and provides homeowners the opportunity to trigger a $5 donation to a local fire department by simply using one of the Spengler Special coupons included in the calendar.

Each time a coupon is redeemed, Spengler will donate $5 to the Spengler Everyday Hero Fund, which will in turn donate grants to local fire departments in the coming year..

The Spengler Everyday Hero Fund is committing a minimum of a $10,000 donation to fire departments regardless of the coupon redemptions.

“For over 40 years, Spengler’s service men have often been called “heroes” for coming to the rescue by repairing water leaks or restoring heat/air conditioning during extreme weather conditions,” Spengler said.

“We know, however, that we’re just doing our job to get things back to normal when unexpected problems happen - the real “heroes” are the dedicated indi-viduals at local fire departments who help safeguard our communities.”

The Men of Spengler Calendars are being distributed for free throughout the metroeast. To receive a free calendar and the opportunity to help a local fire department contact Spengler at 618.623-0572 or at www.facebook.com/The-Spengler-Company.

Some people revel in reds: sun-kissed tomato, inky burgundy, velvet crimson, spicy cayenne and earthy brick.

And you? What's your favorite color?

Whether it's a primary hue like red or blue, or a single shade like butter yellow or lime green, chances are it pleases more than your eye.

"Color has an amazing effect on people, much of it subliminal," said Kay Kendall, interior designer and owner of Kay Kendall Interiors. "Some people walk into a room and immediately have a sense of emotional attachment. And most of that is the result of associations linked to childhood. Our homes should reflect who we are and how we like to feel. And color has an enormous effect on how we feel."

But what if red or tangerine or lavender - is out?

“Don't decorate because of a trend or use all soft, quiet colors because that's what you see in a magazine,” Kendall said. “Ultimately, you will be unhappy, because it's not who you are. Look at trends to see what's out there and to refresh what you have, to reflect your personality.”

The housing crisis, ongoing war and economic downturn have combined to shape Americans' color tastes. “We're searching for the color equivalent of mac and cheese: safe, traditional and comfort-ing,” she said. “But the pops of bright colors, from crimson to acid yellow, suggest that we're ultimately hopeful about the future.”

Neutrals are now, especially in larger purchases like cars, sofas or carpet. “For those big-ticket items, we'll make the safer choice such as neutrals, from rich gray to camel,” Kendall thinks. And, she continues, "We're using trendier colors, like acid green or amethyst, as accent pieces.”

Also, green continues to gain strength from its association with the growing shift toward eco-consciousness. It will show up in everything from fabrics to accessories to countertops.

Whatever your choice, using the help of a professional interior designer may save you plenty of time and headaches, and it’s much more affordable than you think. Want to just re-arrange? Kendall can come into your home and simply use what you already have for a fresh take on a room or your entire home. Call her today at (618) 567-6008 or email [email protected].
