OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE PLEDGE Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs and leisure services that meet the expectations of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the HEPD provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the Triphahn Center, Willow Recreation Center and Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the satisfaction guarantee policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in our country, as demonstrated by the report of the Centers for Disease Control, which indicates approximately 17% (or 13 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. HEPD wants to help! Consider these facts from the National Conference on State Legislators:

Introducing

At HEPD, we’re taking this epidemic seriously by addressing the ways that we can help parents and their children in our community. As such, we’ve assembled a task force of managers and staff to develop a plan to educate and assist our community to improve health and lead healthier lifestyles.

The program, called HEALTH (Helping Everyone Achieve a Lifestyle That’s Healthy), will be multi-faceted and on-going. Initially, we’ll introduce a new publication, HEALTHeKids, for parents that promotes health and wellness in children; particularly those facing weight control issues. Other initiatives may include speakers at mandatory pre-season parent meetings for youth sports. “We have the resources, facilities and programs to help parents,” said Dean Bostrom, Executive Director. “Keeping our kids healthy is good for the entire community.”

The park district will work with sponsor Alexian Brothers to provide information about ways to keep kids at a healthy weight. Our staff Registered Dietitian, Amy Daum, will be very involved as well, providing fi tness and nutrition tips. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the United States over the last 30 years. It has contributed to an increase in chronic diseases like high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, once only seen in adults. To address this serious issue, the HEALTH Program, a District-wide childhood obesity initiative, provides the community with a variety of excellent tools and resources to combat this critical issue.” said Amy Daum, Registered Dietitian for Hoffman Estates Park District.

- Approximately 13 million U.S. children and adolescents are obese, with a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile.

- Obesity is a major risk factor for many serious health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers.

- During the past 40 years, obesity rates for children age 6 to 11 nearly tripled—from 5% to 14%—and more than tripled for adolescents age 12 to 19—from 5% to 17.1%.

- Obese adolescents have an 80% chance of becoming obese adults.

- An estimated 61% of obese young people already have at least one additional health risk factor such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

- Childhood obesity health expenses are estimated at $14 billion annually.

- Almost 30% of U.S. children do not exercise three or more times a week.

- More than 75% of high school students do not eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

PARK BOARD OF COMMISSIONERSThe governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities.

Board Meetings are held monthly at 7:00P at Triphahn Center and Ice Arena.Buildings and Grounds Committee — 1st Tuesday

4WAYSTOREGISTERLETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

At the Hoff man Estates Park District, the health and well-being of our community is of great importance to us. A growing concern nationwide is the obesity rate and at HEPD we are taking steps to address the issue of obesity among our children. As such, we’ve introduced a new initiative called HEALTH, which is an acronym that stands for Helping Everyone Achieve a Lifestyle That is Healthy. As part of this initiative, we’ve created a monthly newsletter to help parents encourage a healthy lifestyle in their children. We’ve changed our STAR Before and After School program to include organized physical activity and healthy snacks. Our Preschool and Early Learning Center are also serving healthy snacks. Our staff registered dietitian has begun attending our Youth Sports Parents’ meetings to discuss nutrition.

But this is just the beginning. Throughout 2013 and beyond, you will see new and exciting eff orts that work toward our goal to reduce the rate of childhood obesity in the Hoff man Estates community. Be sure to attend our kickoff event, the “HEALTHeKids Fair” on Saturday, March 2 from 10:00A to noon at the Triphahn Center Gym.

Another exciting new development is indoor soccer. Now, our young soccer players will have a climate-controlled indoor space with turf that looks and feels like real grass and is soft on impact. Soccer is a great way for children to get physical activity in their schedules. Look for the details on page 17.

Adults can benefi t from more physical activity in their daily lives, too. This winter, try outdoor skating or sledding at one of our parks. See page 42 for a listing of outdoor ice rinks and sled hills. These are two activities that the whole family can enjoy together. Of course, we have our indoor fi tness centers open year round at Prairie Stone™ Sports & Wellness Center, Willow Recreation Center and Triphahn Center. Did you know that if you join Prairie Stone you’ll have access to all three?

There are many enjoyable activities in our community. I encourage you and your loved ones to get out and fi nd something fun to do this season. Keith Evans, PresidentParkBoardofCommissioners

How many hours a day do your kids spend on cell phones, computers, video games and TV? Probably too many, suggests the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Excessive media use can result in attention problems, school difficulties, sleep and eating disorders, and obesity. In addition, the Internet and cell phones can provide opportunity for illicit and risky behavior. The AAP suggests that parents:

Media Overload?

Limit screen time to 1-2 hours per day Keep televisions,

computers and video games out of a child’s bedroom

Turn off the TV during dinner

As an alternative, get your children moving. Encourage playing at the park, organized or backyard sports, free play and exploring. If you must be inside, try music, dancing, singing, board games or crafts. -healthychildren.org

Wolf Pack Development(5–15 years — Triphahn)This very successful two day a week program is ideal for athletes with minimal experience on skates and those younger that have progressed from the starter program. Although the focus in this program is to learn to execute the important Sumo elements of skating, it also includes training in stick work and small games etc. The goal is to prepare players to advance to adding the 3 on 3 Sunday House League games to the next stage of progression. Equipment is available up to certain sizes. TU 4:30P-5:30P 1/8-3/30 $140 / $150 212469-A

The Hockey Development Program encompasses three categories designed to take the new player from learning to stand up on skates to, over time, being able to play on a competitive team. We offer two days a week for a very competitive price believing that skating is one of the most difficult sport exercises to learn and master and needs frequent practice to really begin to enjoy and progress. However if you have to miss a day, no problem! Curriculum is designed to enable students to progress at their own speed. It is always recommended to have a child try a public skate first to ensure they are ready to focus on the process of learning to skate. Contact Randy Jordan, Assistant GM/Hockey Director, for more information on these excellent classes at 847–285–5501 or [email protected].

Junior Wolf Pack(3–8 years — Triphahn)This two day a week program is to get the new skater familiarized with getting up and down on skates. Learning to work edges by marching, gliding etc. up to the beginning of striding for skating. Much time is given to doing drills that encourage free movement and motion that teaches skills while children are having fun and are unaware they are actually learning. Bike helmet and ski gloves (or similar) required. This is a skating only class. Plastic sticks may be introduced at the end of the session. M, F 4:30P–5:20P 1/7-3/29 $130 / $140 212460-A

Wolf Pack 3x3 (5–15 years)This cross ice game program has universally become the way top programs through to pro learn to play the game. A smaller area encourages more touches, shots, edge work, etc. in a competitive environment. A great way to learn hockey before taking the final step, moving to playing full ice Wolf Pack team hockey. SU 2:00P–3:10P 1/13-3/31 $120 / $130 212464-A

Research shows the more you expose your baby to nursery rhymes and songs, the stronger those emerging language-learning skills will be. That's why these Mother Goose-like stories and rhymes are the main theme of this class. Plus, you'll develop research-proven communication strategies with your child through listening activities, speaking "parentese," and sign language. Class fee does not include kit fee of $40 payable to instructor on first day. Kit includes: CD of beautifully arranged nursery rhymes and songs from class, a rhyming picture board book "Hickory, Dickory, Tickle, and Bounce," a set of Art Banners and an instrument for music-making at home. TU 10:45A-11:25A 1/22-3/12 $85 / $93 216347-A

Kindermusik Our Time (18 months-3½ years — Triphahn)Our Time encourages toddlers to uncover an engaging musical world while building confidence, self-control and communication skills. Singing, imitating sounds, rhyming and object identification foster language skills while creative movement to various musical “moods” develops a sense of balance, timing and spatial awareness. Listening and turn-taking encourage blossoming social skills. Our Time reflects the emotional foundations of school readiness and the latest research on music and early childhood development. Our Time is a unique opportunity for parent and child to interact and learn together in an unhurried and joyful manner. This session's theme is "Fiddle Dee Dee". Class fee does not include kit fee of $60 payable to instructor on first day. Kit includes: Double CD featuring songs from class; two interactive storybooks — this Little Piggy Played the Fiddle and Animal Serenade to develop early literacy skills; home activity book and a pair of fiddlestick instruments. No class March 19 and 26.TU 10:00A-10:40A 1/22-5/14 $165 / $181 216348-A

Kindermusik Sign & Sing (0-3 years — Triphahn)Kindermusik’s Sign and Sing is a developmentally appropriate program for parents and hearing children based on American Sign Language. Using every day items in engaging small and large group activities, we’ll sing songs and practice the sign as we say the words, play with toys and help the children learn both the spoken word and the sign. Parents will learn to spot their babies’ most “teachable moments” and the sign language teaching methods of the experts. Plus they’ll learn to recognize and respond to their children’s versions of signs. When a child is chasing a bubble or asking for the ball, make the sign for it and say the word. So a child has the ways to associate the word with the object: the child holds the ball, hears the parent say the word and then sees the adult make the sign. Throughout the program over 75 signs will be used in various activities and games that we play together. Class fee does not include kit fee of $60 payable to instructor on first day. Kit fee includes: Family Activity Guide, DVD Glossary, and clip-on flashcards. No class March 19 and 26. TU 9:15A-9:55A 1/22-5/14 $165 / $181 216349-A

Tots World (2½-4 years — Triphahn)Tots gain independence as they participate in less structured indoor games, free play, songs and stories. Children must be comfortable in a classroom setting. Each session will have different projects and themes. Instructor: Kim Schoewe.F 9:30A-10:15A 1/18-3/15 $39 / $43 216011-A

As a bridge between free play and competitive play, Coach Pickles’ Jelly Bean Sports is a prescription for sports success. Encapsulated in the Jelly Bean Way is the structure missing from free play and the exploration often absent from competitive sports. Developed by Dr. Brad Kayden, Ed.D., our curriculum focuses on the fun inside building not just sports skills, but also the important life skills of listening, communication and critical thinking. Led by certified Jelly Bean Coach Performers, our Jelly Bean Programs are designed to help children learn how to feel, think and act inside sports environments. This makes kids more coachable and productive at the competitive level later. See you in class!

Formerly Poplar Creek Country Club and now Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club, the name change is derived from several sources. As part of a multi-million-dollar enhancement project that began in 2010, installation of eight, environmentally-friendly wood bridges lends even greater aesthetics to golfers' journeys. Adding "bridges" to the club name also stresses the importance of these bridges taking golfers over critical flood-plain areas allowing the course to remain open even after heavy rains. Not to be outdone, the new bridges adds a golf history lesson to golfers' rounds. Four bridges are adorned with plaques of famous amateur golfers: Bobby Jones, Chick Evans, Samuel Ryder and Babe Zaharias. Playing tribute to these legends' significant contributions to the game "bridges" the gap between the club's storied past, present and future. As a public facility, Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club feels strongly about the amateur heritage and future of the great game of golf. Generations to come will also enjoy recent enhancements, including 15 renovated golf holes, a vastly expanded golf learning center, a major clubhouse renovation and a new, majestic, outdoor event area with waterfall and pavilion.
