Artist Spotlight LIDIA BRODETSKYOcean County College hosted the 35th Annual Ocean County Senior Citizens Art Exhibit in June 2011 in the Arts & Community Center, OCC Main Campus, Toms River. One hundred twenty-one senior artists exhibited their work in both the professional and non-professional categories. An award presentation and reception was held on June 30 when fifty-five ribbons were presented to the winners in first, second, and third place, along with honorable mention.

After receiving their first place ribbons in Ocean County’s exhibit, the winners went on to compete in the New Jersey Senior Citizens Art Exhibit at Meadow Lakes in East Windsor.

According to Joanne Padrone, OCC Manager of Resource Development/Academy for Lifelong Learning, Ocean County artists fared very well at the state competition. “This was an exciting year for Ocean County. Fifteen local entries went on to the state exhibit with seven Ocean County artists winning ribbons in the state. We were thrilled when Lidia Brodetsky of Toms River received ‘Best in Show’ in the Non-Professional category with her painting, Always a Lady.”

Brodetsky was born in Moscow, Russia, and moved to the United States in the early 1970s. She has a Bachelor of Arts in art and a Master of Arts in Russian language and literature. Among her accomplishments, Brodetsky speaks Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish, and Bulgarian, and reads Spanish. All her life, Brodetsky had the desire to paint. Finally, in 2003, her dream came to fruition when she began taking art lessons at Ocean County College. Brodetsky says she was inspired by her art instructor June Wilson.

When asked about her artistic philosophy, Brodetsky replied, “I enjoy working realistically with portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. As I am impressed and moved by the life and intensity of color surrounding me, I constantly work to transfer these emotions into my paintings and thrive on the challenge of making my passion for color closer to palpable in each painting I create.”

In her prize-winning painting Always a Lady, Brodetsky describes the beauty of her subject when she states that “Beauty never ages, she feels beautiful, and she reacts like the beautiful woman in the picture.” The painting speaks for itself.

The safest approach to driving in winter weather is staying off the road. However, travel is sometimes unavoidable. If you must drive before snowplows and sanding crews have a chance to clear the way, follow these tips to safely reach your destination.

If you know in advance that you may have to drive, replace your wiper blades, apply a water-shedding material to the outside of all windows, fill your windshield washer system with anti-icing fluid, and pack an emergency kit in case you become stranded. On the day of travel, remove all snow from your vehicle and make sure headlights and taillights are clear. Run your air conditioner on the open air setting to remove condensation from the interior of windows.

Once on the road, take it slow; use low gears to maintain traction. Don’t let your vehicle’s safety equipment give you a false sense of security. All-wheel drive helps your vehicle accelerate in slippery conditions, but it is no advantage when you need to stop. Electronic stability control can minimize skids but won’t give your tires additional traction. Most importantly, all the technology in the world won’t give you the ability to control other drivers on the road.

Finally, handling your vehicle in slippery conditions is not always intuitive. In an oversteer situation when your car is turning too much, steer into the skid while gently accelerating to regain control. In an understeer situation when your car refuses to turn, carefully adjust your steering wheel and remove your foot from the accelerator or brakes until you regain grip. If you anticipate frequently needing to travel in winter weather, you may want to seek professional instruction from a driving school.
