STAR STUDENT: LIAM MARSHALL Liam started karate with Bushido-Kai when he 8 years old. Now 14, he has earned the rank of junior Shodan (black belt), and has never wavered in his commitment to karate. What does that mean? At BKC, it means taking every opportunity to learn new things and grow as a martial arts student. This year, Liam joined the provincial team training and has started growing into his role as a key member of the BKC competitive team. Liam has helped instruct our children’s classes at the University of Manitoba, assisting his dad, Sempai Peter. He’s always there when we need help, whether it be coming early to set up mats, assisting with classes or performing demos with the BKC team. Liam attends all seminar and training opportunities and absorbs everything he can to make the most of his martial arts experience. He embodies the spirit of a true karate-ka of Bushido-Kai Canada, always there to learn, grow and help the dojo. Liam has a team spirit and always makes his very best effort to contribute and excel.

November-December 2010

Liam’s commitment and attitude have enabled him to grow exponentially as a karate-ka...and it shows. Recently, Liam represented BKC at the prestigious Sato Cup in Vancouver, and in March, earned a silver medal in Black Belt Kata at the Manitoba Provincial Karate Championships! Next year, Liam will continue to work towards his Shodan, training and competing for Bushido-Kai Canada and Manitoba. BKC is proud to claim Liam as one of our own. We wish him continued success and know there are great things to come!

Bushido-Kai Canada was proud and loud at this year’s provincial karate tournament held in Winnipeg at Glenlawn Collegiate on March 5th. We were the largest contingent and brought home a record-breaking total of 46 medals, making us the number 1 dojo for 2011. Our BKC competitors had the best ever showing. We swept many categories and were a dominant force in most divisions. A huge thank you to all our parents, families and students for all their hard work, perseverance and support.

As you know, at Bushido-Kai Canada we practice ‘dojo etiquette.’ That means not walking into the training area with shoes, respecting higher belts, always bowing upon entering and leaving the dojo, listening to your sensei, not talking during class...and so on.

We would also ask our parents and students to please practise desk etiquette. We are a busy dojo and everything is centralized at the front desk area.

So what exactly does that mean?

• Please… do not leave your articles on the desk, bench or underneath at any time. We cannot be responsible for lost or misplaced articles.

• Please… do not sit down at the edge of the desk or behind the desk to put your boots on, pack your bags, or rest. Chairs are provided in the dojo and media room to sit and gather your personal items.

• Please… wait patiently. If someone is being served, please give them privacy to conduct their business. Thank you! Debby

Notes from Debby's Desk

NOTICE TO PARENTSParents, please… Do not leave your children unsupervised before the start of their specified class.

Please do not drop off your children before class without providing supervision for them. Bushido-Kai Canada DOES NOT open the dojo doors prior to the start of class and at this time, BKC instructors and staff do not provide child care outside the dojo. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated to keep things running smoothly.
