Living Rock continued the Foodie Choice Award. Many of the restaurants have mentioned through the years that it would be amazing to have their culinary skills judged by members from their own sector. Judges were given anonymous soup samples. All soups were scored by each of the Judges and then the votes were collected and presented at the Closing Ceremonies.

FOODIE CHOICE AWARD  Special thanks to 2016 Spirit Award Winner, Dorothy Taylor, who has volunteered with Soupfest for 11 years Dorothy brings incredible enthusiasm and a positive attitude to the Soupfest Committee work. Her support with media relationships been very valuable.

The Rock Review SPRING 2016

Serving youth since 1985

Cody has come out to support Soupfest as a Youth Ambassador for the past eight years. This year, Cody challenged the community to match his generous dona on of $250. Living Rock is facing significant funding shor alls providing work for youth, and he stepped up to help! Instantaneously, three donors came forward and began the chain reac on that he was hoping to inspire. Not only is Cody a dedicated volunteer and donor to Living Rock, but he is also an Alumni. He has graduated from needing the services and now does his part to give to others who are s ll using them. “Living Rock gave me the ability to  learn rou ne, and I’ve benefited most from  the  coaching  and mentorship mee ngs  and  the Incen ve Program (rewards for work done).

“The coaching was a big help with my mental health in ge ng the supports  I needed within the community.    I used to feel like my problems were always in control of me.  But  now,  I  feel  like  I  am  controlling  my  mental health.  These  programs  are  relevant  and  the  Rock  s ll  uses  innova ve  techniques  in  speaking  to  youth.  Like  the Housing   Support Program;  it helped me go from  living in  five  apartments  in  one  year  to  staying  in  one      apartment for the last five years. ”  Cody has graduated from a Mohawk College career program which acts as a stepping stone into the workforce. This led him to his current job at an electronics store, and he has proudly held this posi on for over three years. “I love having the ability to work. I’ve found independence in all aspects of my life.”

STAFF SUPPORT KITCHEN WORK EXPERIENCE

Easter is a reminder that God is s ll in the life changing business. This has been an exci ng season at Living Rock. Soupfest 14 offered amazing soups, dynamic music all day long and a great atmosphere of celebra on. We also had the privilege of hos ng a tour and mee ng with Irwin Elman, Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth and a delega on from the Ministry of Children and Youth. Irwin shared,

"I have the privilege to travel the Province mee ng with young  people where they are at. From  me to  me I arrive at a place that  just feels right. The youth, no ma er the challenges they face,  are  comfortable  and  hopeful.  They  speak  their  minds         eloquently. They are at home. The Living Rock is such a place. I find  myself  returning  again  and  again  to  listen  to  the             remarkable youth there and to be re‐energized by the spirit of the centre." He indicated we need to protect these safe spaces.

What makes the Rock a safe space for youth?

• There is lots of talk about youth engagement. Living Rock has always been commi ed to “reaching out in the cultural language of youth.” • We work alongside youth in the “earn through work or learning model”. Youth are part of the community. For example, the food bank is “by youth for youth” and they help do all the shipping and receiving in Food Bank. • We work with a dynamic, diverse team of over 100 volunteers and students training to work in human services. Youth really appreciate the “listening ear” or playing games with a volunteer. A youth said yesterday, “At Living Rock, I am allowed to be myself.” • Across the community, prayer goes up for the Rock and youth in the core. Gathering is really special and I have put a new emphasis on youth sharing their songs, poetry and gi s. Greater Ontario House of Prayer (GOHOP) partners with Living Rock in prayer. We read a story about a monk that wanted to change the world and instead found a place of safety and said, “Before I could offer sanc‐tuary, I had to find it.” (Punkmonk p.97) God creates peace and refuge. Thank you so much for partnering with us to support vulnerable youth in the community. We are so grateful to the restaurants, sponsors, entertainment and volunteers that stood with us at Soupfest. We encourage you to visit Soupfest restaurants and say. “Thank you”. Join us and empty your basement for a cause to help make the Omni Basement Indoor Garage Sale a great success (Details on back page). Please keep us in your prayers in this “30th Anniversary Series”. Your support makes a difference. Help us protect a “safe space for youth”. Blessings to you as we celebrate Easter’s story of life and new beginnings.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF SERVING YOUTH AT RISK

20th ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT Cody also set aside money and reached out to other stores across Canada, paying for roughly 200 toys for Opera on Christmas Blessing. “As  an  Alumni,  I  really  wanted  to  share  my  love  of          electronics with the kids. I donated Remote Race Cars,  megaphones and even Drones. These were special items that I know I would have loved when I a ended the Rock.”    We at Living Rock would love to see Cody’s Challenge progress. If you would like to join in this campaign and donate to Living Rock, please call: 905‐528‐7625 x239. Don’t forget to men on Cody’s Challenge!
