About the AwardsIn the grocery industry, manufacturers and distributors are constantly looking to introduce products that reflect the latest consumer preferences and trends. Retail Council of Canada (RCC) is proud to recognize that commitment

through the annual Canadian Grand Prix New Product Awards.

This is the 21st year for the award program, which honours products across 24 categories and also includes five special awards.

In March 2014, a 32-member jury gathered in Montreal at the

Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec to assess the food

products from the national brands and private labels. The jury evalu-

ated the non-food products in their homes over six weeks. All entrants were graded on five criteria:

1. uniqueness and innovation;

2. product characteristics;

3. presentation and packaging;

4. overall consumer value; and

5. consumer acceptance (the penetration rate of a product in households).

Members of the jury represented con-sumers, distributors, Grand Prix spon-sors, media and students from across Canada. Marcus Von Albrecht, a well-known B.C. chef and President of Mava Foods, chaired the jury. The pro-cess resulted in 89 finalists, who each scored at least 70 per cent in judging. The winners were announced at a gala on June 4, 2014 at the Toronto Con-

gress Centre, as part of RCC’s STORE Conference 2014.

“Each finalist and winner represents the collective efforts we see throughout the industry – from product de-velopment, design and brand management teams – to inspire and delight consumers with what’s new,” says Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO of RCC.

The awards were open to manufacturers and distributors of all sizes, for products introduced during the 2013 calendar year. All of the finalists and winners can use the Grand Prix Award logo on their packaging for two years, as a symbol of new product leadership.
