Saturday, September 5, 2015TRANSCRIPT
O n behalf of the residents of Watsonville’s District Three, home of the
Watsonville Municipal Airport, I’m pleased to welcome you to Wings Over Watsonville! During this exciting day, you will have the opportunity to experience the newest aviation event in our area, at the only airport in Santa Cruz County. As a long time Watsonville public servant and resident, I can attest to the viability, vitality and value of our general aviation facility.
Today, you will have an opportunity to walk the ramp and see all things aviation, from some very familiar historic military aircraft, and for the very first time, a collection of the business “working aircraft” owned and operated by major Watsonville-based corporations.
But this day is not all about business. Our airport management and staff have brought together some exciting and family oriented venues to include free flights for youth and a free KidZone.
Be sure to stop by the restaurant, enjoy various food trucks and vendors.
I am pleased you have chosen to visit us today and I am certain you will enjoy Wings Over Watsonville!
Sincerely,Lowell Hurst • Former MayorCouncil Member, District 3

Greetings and welcome to Wings Over Watsonville!
We are excited to open this longstanding general aviation airport to the people it serves on a daily basis.
Whether it’s serving as a flight department home for some of the most successful agri-business companies in the country; or as an active base of operations for first responders; or as a first step to launching a career in aviation, Watsonville Municipal serves the City, County and Country.
The Watsonville Municipal Airport’s mandate consists of ensuring a safe aerodome, a high level of service and a commitment to a self-sustaining, fiscally sound enterprise operation. Today we welcome the opportunity to celebrate all things aviation to include a great lineage of our military service aircraft, our vitally important first responder aircraft and Watsonville’s ‘working aircraft” … all which serve in a capacity that sets this airport apart.
The airport staff, City support personnel and a host of volunteers have worked diligently to provide you a family oriented, fun filled day that is admission free! Each of us is honored to serve at this inaugural event and we open our gates to you for a glimpse of what your municipal airport helps make possible.
As a pilot who learned to fly at Watsonville and now serves as its manager, I have a unique perspective of and commitment to KWVI. I encourage you to “walk the ramp,” get up close and personal with the aircraft and enjoy the day’s activities. If there is anything the staff and I can do to assist you please let us know.
Thank you for being a part of this great event, be safe and enjoy!
Best regards,Rayvon WilliamsAirport Manager

“Executive Sweet”North American B-25 Mitchell Medium bomber
The B-25 has been seen by millions of aviation fans at air shows, fly-ins and private aviation events for more than 4 decades. Built in Kansas City in 1944-45 as a B-25J, Executive Sweet saw extensive Stateside service throughout the war as a crew trainer. In 1948,it was converted into a USAF VB-25J and used as a VIP transport until the end of her service. After several more years of military service at the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Field, Texas, the Mitchell was sold as surplus ad became a crop sprayer. She was acquired by Hollywood’s Filmways Studios in 1968 where she became the lead “on camera” aircraft named “Vestal Virgin” in the film Catch-22.
“Betsy’s Biscuit Bomber”Douglas C-47 SkyTrain Transport
The Douglas C-47 Skytrain is a military transport aircraft developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during World War II and remains in front line service with various military operators to the present day
“Harpoon”Lockheed PV-2D Patrol Bomber
The PV-2 Harpoon with a 686 ft² (63.7 m²) wingspan first flew on 3 December 1943. On the PV-2, the armament became standardized at five forward-firing machine guns. Many early PV-1s had a bombardier’s position, which was deleted in the PV-2. Some other significant developments included the increase of the bombload by 30% to 4,000 lb (1,800 kg), and the ability to carry eight 5-inch (127 mm) HVAR rockets under the wings.
“Huey”Bell UH-1H Iroquois Utility Helicopter
EMU INC. derives its name from the radio call sign of a unique unit in Army aviation history, the 135th Assault Helicopter Company. The 135th was a typical Vietnam era Assault Helicopter Company with the major exception that it was composed of both U.S. Army and Royal Australian Navy personnel. Because of this unique composition, the 135th was considered an Experimental Military Unit, hence its call sign E.M.U. or EMU. EMU INC. is a non-profit corporation.
“Red Star Formation Team”Nanchang CJ-6 Military trainer
Red Stars are a Precision Warbird Mass Formation Display Team. Demonstrations are non-aerobatic and display the precision flying capabilities of the RedStar Pilots Association (RPA) formation of qualified pilots. The Team is actually comprised of several teams across the United States, staffed by FAA qualified warbird formation pilots who have been trained and evaluated to the standards of the RPA.
“John Collver”North American T-6 Military trainer
John Collver has an aviation career spanning more than three decades and over 14,000 hours of flight time in over 50 types of aircraft. His career includes time in the Goodyear Blimp, flying for television, as well as teaching and competing in the aerobatic arena. In addition, John formally flew for the Northrop/Grumman Corporation supporting the U.S. Military for over a decade.

teams of student artists paint the SafeLaunch plane at air shows across California and
by special arrangement at general aviation airports. After participating in a lesson about the science of addiction, youth paint their dreams and life-affirming designs on the fuselage of a Cessna 182. Local media are invited to the event to help spread the prevention message.
Individuals, businesses, and youth service providers, who support the SafeLaunch mission to prevent addiction where it starts...before it starts, are invited to sponsor Flight Above Addiction events. Sponsors receive recognition of their commitment in press releases and at media events.
SafeLaunch is a registered tax-exempt 501c3. Ron Cuff, the tour pilot, is a retired Navy Commander who was safely launched from and landed on seven different U.S. aircraft carriers over 120 times. Janet Rowse is a small business owner and an artist. Both are parents.

The Convertibles formed at the University of the Pacific in the early 1980s and dedicated their performances to fun and popular hits from the 50’s to the present. They bring it all, from rock to R&B to Motown with even a little Funk thrown in for spice! You’ll hear soaring guitar leads, Earth Wind & Fire-like power horns, ballads and anthems from artists such as Elvis, Journey and even Bruno Mars. Their repertoire is vast but you’re likely to recognize every hit song … and the songs are virtually all danceable. Their arrangements most often stay true to the originals that audiences know and love. The Convertibles pull off tight harmonies and enjoy mixing it up with audiences.

Pete Plumb, PresenterSaturday, Sept. 5, 2 p.m. (1400)Topic: Light Sport Aircraft Engine Design
Plumb designed and built the all-wood Cracker Jack (CJ) Sport Plane in the 1980s. It used a two-cylinder, four-stroke engine from a DAF, a car made in Holland. Watch it fly at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAZuCccYSbA. About its development, Plumb said:
It was very similar to a 1/2 VW but parts were scarce. The lack of a good four-stroke engine and financial problems at the time doomed the CJ as a kit plane. Over the years, I continued to build on my engineering knowledge and continued to refine and re-engineer the Cracker Jack with the intent of reintroducing it to the Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) market with a more powerful and more available engine. About 15 years ago, I began looking into cutting a Continental A-65 in half but never did anything more than think about it. Again, the lack of new A-65 parts was a concern but I looked into cutting an O-200 in half instead and the O-100 concept was born. In October 2011, while driving to work one morning, I decided to start building the prototype O-100.

my late Mom noticed I had an airplane state of mind when I was 3 years old, as I was “always looking up in the sky.” Raised in Bakersfield as a kid in the late 1950s and into the ‘60s, I would spend many hours watching the classic propliner
Convairs, Martins & F-27s of United & Pacific Airlines arrive and depart Meadows Field which forged my passion for aviation and flight.
I read all the books, assembled the models and treasure the memories of attending the nearby Edwards AFB open houses in the ‘60s where I was exposed to high performance jets & research aircraft. A highlight: Watching Chuck Yeager fly the NF-104 with a rocket engine!
Our family moved to Watsonville in 1966 where I attended my first Antique Fly-In at Watsonville Airport. As many can attest to, in the years following, I spent many hours around the airport, volunteered at the Antique Fly-In and got to know its planes and pilots, gleaning all I could about both. I owe alot of my knowledge and flights in aircraft of all types to the legendary “airport bums” ... who have for the most part have gone West.
My experience in aviation includes working for Butler Aviation, Ogden Aviation and American Eagle/American Airlines at KBFL, KSFO and KSJC airports. I have also participated in marketing for a number of airshows and aviation events through the years including the Gathering of Warbirds in Fresno and Madera, Warbirds Over Shafter and others. In addition I have acted in the capacity of a consultant for several other aviation related venues and publications and have upon invitation spoken on the history of military, corporate and private aircraft.
An accomplished aviation artist, I convey my passion for aviation via illustration in graphite pencil and pen and ink mediums.

i am the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 119 Young Eagles coordinator for Watsonville Airport. I first
rode in a small airplane with my grandfather as an infant in 1956, got my private license in 1977, earned a BS in Aeronautics from SJSU in 1980, and operated Air Force communications satellites with Lockheed Martin as a Systems Engineer and Manager since then. In aviation, I learned basic aerobatics, worked as an aircraft mechanic, towed sailplanes, and traveled around the Western United States. In 2005 I came to Watsonville airport with the Beechcraft Bonanza I grew up with. I began flying kids with the EAA Chapter 119 Young Eagles program in 2006 where local pilots give their time and aircraft to introduce kids to aviation. I have flown over 300 kids myself and have helped in coordinating flights for hundreds more at Watsonville and other Bay Area airports. Many local kids in the program have gone on to learn to fly with formal flight training, licensing as private and commercial pilots. In addition to the Watsonville Young Eagles program I have given talks on engineering careers to STEM groups and Teacher Continuing Education around the Bay Area, and shared my telescope with the public at the Santa Cruz lighthouse when interesting sights are in the sky. I am also the father to two daughters, a step-daughter and granddaughter along with being engaged to an amazing local special needs teacher.

i ’m a pilot with Squadron 13, Civil Air Patrol based at Watsonville Airport. We use the balloon as part of our cadet aerospace
education program. At this point, we are training both cadets and senior members in ground crew duties for tethering a hot air balloon. September 5th will be the second time we’ve gathered for launching the tethered balloon at the Watsonville airport. The airport manager, Rayvon Williams has been a huge supporter of the CAP.
I’m a retired Army pilot and former CalFire helicopter pilot with a commercial pilot certificate in fixed and rotary-wing aircraft as well as Lighter-Than-Air (balloons). I flew balloons commercially for a few years back in the eighties in this area as well as in the Palm Springs area. I bought this balloon, a TBW (The Balloon Works) 74,400 cubic feet AX-7 last year because I missed ballooning. The fun factor involved in just being around these “gentle giants” is off the charts.
When I’m not exposing CAP members to the oldest form of powered flight, I use the balloon to take friends and neighbors for the occasional flight.

the Monterey Bay Ninety-Nines based at Watsonville Municipal Airport is the local Chapter of The Ninety-Nines, Inc.,
an international organization of licensed women pilots from 35 countries. We are a non-profit, charitable organization which promotes the advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honoring our unique history and sharing our passion for flight.
Locally, we do this by providing flight training scholarships to women and girls, giving Right Seat Companion Seminars, holding aviation-related programs for groups such as the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and other youth groups and to local schools. We also provide 10 cent a pound flights at airport open houses, assist at airport events. We participate in airport open houses, give 10 cents-a-pound rides, airmark airports and give airport tours.
For many years the Monterey Bay Ninety-Nines have been responsible for Pilot Registration and Information at the various Watsonville Air Shows and Fly-Ins.
Our members include women who fly professionally and those who “. . . fly for the fun of it. . .” to quote Amelia Earhart, the first president of the organization.
