Prayer and the Trinity
Our tradition teaches us that God is a personal God. In fact, from our Christian tradition we know that God is three persons—the HolyTrinity; three persons but one God. We may well wonder what
exactly that means, but that is a topic for another article. Suffice it to saythat “God” is a term similar to the term “human.” If you are in a room withthree other human beings, there are four persons—including you—in theroom but only one human nature. The Israelites knew that God was a person because they knew that Godintervened in their lives and history in a number of ways. Most importantly,
God chose them as God’s people; freed them from slavery and oppressionin Egypt; led them through the wilderness; gave them the Law throughMoses; by means of which they were able to live together; and led theminto the land promised to their ancestor Abraham. In fact, God evenrevealed God’s name to them—YHWH—which was probably pronouncedYahweh. So God was so personally involved with the Israelites that Godtold them God’s name. This is significant because by sharing the Name with them, God was callingthe Israelites into relationship. Think about what you do when you meetsomeone for the first time. You share your name, right? That is a way of sharing something of importance with the other person. From that point on,you and that person have a relationship. You can now call upon each other
by name. And so, too, could the Israelites call upon God by name.Over time, however, the Israelites became scrupulous about the use of God’s name. They were so worried that they might speak God’s name invain that they stopped even pronouncing God’s name, and whenever thename appeared in writing, they would say instead “Adonai,” which means“Lord.” Thus whenever you see the word, “Lord” in scripture, it isgenerally the translation for God’s name.Jesus followed a similar practice, but Jesus introduced a differentrelationship between God and humanity. For Jesus, God is Abba, which is adiminutive version of Father—something like “Daddy.” So in this respectJesus’ relationship with God was like the relationship between a loving
parent and child. God was not the more formal “Lord” but the “Daddy.”And Jesus urged us to speak to God in a similar w saying to his followers(and is saying to us) “God does not want you to think of him as a ruler butas a parent.” Of course a parent is still in charge, but ay. That’s why whenhis disciples asked him to teach them to pray, Jesus told them to begin bysaying “Our Father.” In a way Jesus was the relationship of parent to child
is much different from the relationship of Lord to servant. We also know Jesus as the Christ and as the Second Person of the Trinity. He is the Second Person because he is begotten by God the Father from
before all worlds—that is, before all time.

P.2
He is also known as the Word of God because he is the Word of God that was spoken in creation when God said “Letthere be…” So Jesus is the human manifestation of the Second Person of the Trinity, which is the Word of God.Another way of thinking of this is that through speaking, through the word, we come to understand things. And so weunderstand God the Father through the Word, Jesus the Christ, who is the human face of God. And because heassumed a human form, he is one of us—our brother if you will. Our tradition also teaches that God is known to us as and through the Holy Spirit. Like the Second Person of the
Trinity, the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity was also with God from the beginning. This is the Spiritthat swept over the face of the waters at the time of creation. And this is also the Spirit that inspired the prophets tospeak God’s truth to the Israelites. It is this Spirit that descended on the Apostles at Pentecost, strengthening themand enabling them to form the Church. And it is this Spirit that continues to act in the Church and in our hearts sothat we may know the Truth. It is through the indwelling Spirit that we know God and the Christ. It is through theSpirit that we have our being as well.So what has all of this to do with prayer? The short answer is that because God is a person, God desires and seeks arelationship with us. God created us precisely for this reason—that we might know God and share in God’s beautyand the beauty of God’s created order, of which we are a part. But we are the intelligent part of creation, if you will.We are that part of creation that is created in God’s image and likeness. And so God seeks a relationship with us, andwe, whether we admit it or even know it or not, desire a relationship with God. It is this that fulfills our life and it isthis for which we were created.Of course we have a relationship through communing and communicating with God. As we turn to God we aretransformed and find our true Self. And that is what God desires from us. God wants to know us and God wants to beknown by us, which requires presence and conversation. Of course, God is always present to us, but we may not be
present to God. That is why it is so important to take some time each day to spend talking with God.I say “talking with God” because sometimes we may fall into the habit of talking at God. “God I need this, that andthe other thing. Thanks.” That’s not a conversation and it doesn’t allow us to know God. Similarly, if we do all thetalking, even if it is not a wish list, without listening, we are not really in a conversation either. So what is needed issome talking perhaps, but most importantly, some listening. It is our listening to God that will transform us in theend. So while “saying your prayers” is good; don’t suppose that’s an end of the matter. Try listening to God as well. You might be surprised at what God wishes to say to you. And finally, don’t suppose that you can only speak to Godor listen to God at a prescribed time of the day that you have set aside expressly for that purpose. It is true that weshould have a time designated for praying but it is also true that God is present when we are stuck in traffic or standing in line at the market or you name it.So I encourage you to begin getting to know God better through prayer. And if you have questions about how to get
started, ask me; or better yet, ask God. God knows a lot about prayer.
God bless,
Father Tim +

Organ Pipes Renewal
Even though our organ pipes areno longer functional, they are a
prominent fixture in the church.Over the years they have becomedingy with age. A proposal torestore them was presented andapproved by the Vestry. It entailsremoving and resetting the
pipes, cleaning and spray paintingthem, and rearranging them toform an arch design, which willfit in with the scheme of thearchitecture already in place. Thework is being scheduled for thespring. Mark Geiger and CarlosOtero have volunteered to helpwith the operation. Morevolunteers would help make thetask go quicker. If you are able to
help please let Bruce know.
The overall cost for materials andassembly would be about$500.00. We are asking thatdonations be made to the CapitalImprovement Fund to helpalleviate cost to the church. Your contribution would help to further
beautify the church and accent
our new organ.

SOUPER BOWL SUDAY IS FEBRUARY 6TH
The History of the Souper Bowl:A simple prayer: "Lord, even as we enjoy the
Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful
of those who are without a bowl of soup to
eat" is inspiring a youth-led movement to helphungry and hurting people around the world.
This prayer, delivered by Brad Smith, then aseminary intern serving at Spring ValleyPresbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, gave birth to an idea. Why not use Super Bowlweekend, a time when people come together for
football and fun, to also unify the nation for ahigher good: collecting dollars and canned foodfor the needy? Youth could collect donations
at their schools and churches in soup pots,
and then send every dollar DIRECTLY to a
local charity of THEIR choice.
The senior high youth of Spring Valley Presbyterian liked the idea so much they decided toinvite other area churches to join the team. Twenty-two Columbia churches participated thatfirst year, reporting their results so a total could be determined, and then sending all $5,700they had raised to area non-profits.
That was 1990. Since then, ordinary young people have generated an extraordinary $70million for soup kitchens, food banks and other charities in communities across the country. In addition, hundreds of thousands of youth have experienced for themselves the joy andsatisfaction of giving and serving, inspiring people of all ages to follow their generousexample.
Last year , the Souper Bowl raised $10 million dollars nationwide!
