Happy reading, Mary

Mary’s Book Corner

How We Survive Here: Families Across Time by Gebben and Weber is a fascinating memoir about writing an historical novel based on their great great grandfather. It all started with an unexpected find of a cache of letters sent to him in Ohio from his German relatives during the years 1850 to 1910. In her fifties, Gebben decided to pursue her Masters of Fine Arts in writing, both to learn technique and to have guidance and deadlines as the book was to be her thesis. Weber, in Germany, translated all the letters and provided help and encouragement. Gebben's father had done some ge-nealogical research but she really wasn't very interested until her great great grandfather began to come alive through the letters and her thorough research. I can't wait to read the resulting novel, The Last of the Blacksmiths.

Happy New Year to all!

Family Tree Magazine Dec. 2018 has “Cyber States” picks for the best

free websites for genealogy for U.S. records (a few of my finds are in-

cluded also). Also be aware that receiving our newsletter online means you are able to just

click on the blue link.

Alabama www.alabamamosaic.org This is a work in progress; using “ “ is best. Keep fol-lowing links in article. http://digital.archives.alabama.gov This is a site with access to rec-ords that I liked.

Alaska https://library.alaska.gov/ Select “For the Public”, then the database you wish to search. A bit complex but worth the effort if you have Alaska Gold Rushers!

Arizona http://genealogy.az.gov/ At this time has primarily birth and death records. http://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/digital/ This site has several databases to explore including newspapers, maps and access to archives.

Arkansas http://archives.arkansas.gov select Research tab, then Digital Collections. On right side of screen is list of available collections. Orange square at edge of document can be moved by clicking in area not orange. (Took a while to figure that out!) currently has mostly Northeast and Southwest regions digitized. Work in progress.

California https://calisphere.org/ “Calisphere is a gateway to digital collections from Cali-fornia's great libraries, archives, and museums.” New to me! Under Collections, you will see lists available at this time to search. Some old favorites are California Newspapers https://cdnc.ucr.edu and Online Archives of CA http://www.oac.cdlib.org/

Colorado https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/archives/archives -search with a direct search through currently available records. http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/genealogy with a search for specific collections.
