I called Pat Davis t he night be fo re to

make sure he had ever ything ready and al l his

gear was compact and set to go . We ta lked

about what we were go ing to do and the en-

counters we might have in Puer to Rico as

we ll as t he lack o f s leep we will get , t he

amaz ing locat ions we wil l be go ing to and the

car . I woke up at 3:30 am to cat ch my 6 am

f light to Phil ly, which connected to San Juan.

Pat was go ing to land exact ly a ha lf hour af-

t er me, which gave me t ime to get t he rent a l

and dr ive back to get him so we could go

st raight to t he rain fo rest . When I got to

Puer to Rico , I had ever ything as car r y-on, so

I went to get t he rent a l without a problem, set

up my gear in t he car and wait ing fo r Pat to

land. The t ra ffic was get t ing bad, and i f you

have been to Puerto Rico befo re you wil l un-

derst and how bad people dr ive out there.

Having sa id that , when we pulled the car

back into the rent a l center we had scra t ches

on ever y co rner o f t he car but I haven’t heard

fro m them about any o f t hat , cross my fin-

gers.

Once I picked up Pat we went to gather

some food and water fo r t he week and set up

camp on top o f a r idge in a far mer’s land. We

went over t he week and st ar t ed to prepare fo r

t he cascade hike by rout ing the t raverse and

d iscuss ing hazards we may encounter inc lud-

ing flash floods. We got to bed knowing this

was go ing to be a fast t r ip fu ll o f wake up

and go , eat , sleep, repeat….and it was…

Pat and I woke up ear ly T hursday morning so

we could get to t he water fa l l cascade hike

be fo re t he aft ernoon flash floods ro ll in. In

Puer to Rico fla sh floods can happen at any-

t ime but since we went in t he dry season the

threat o f flash f loods was min imized. We got

a r ide to t he bo t tom o f Rio Blanco which is

ca lled “E l Hipp ie” . This has a poo l o f water

with a canyo n r ight above the fir st water fa l l.

We ascended the jung le t ra il unt il we got to

t he drop in o f t he Rio Blanco . The bou lders

were large and s l ipper y….. ver y s l ipper y!

One wrong move and you can s l ip , crack your

bones, wash down the r iver over a water fa l l,

o r get keyed in with t he swift current in some

sect ions.

We wore 5.10 canyoneer boot s, which

have st icky rubber mater ia l t hat wil l give

good t ract ion even wit h s l ipper y cond it ions. I

wanted to be ext ra carefu l t ak ing Pa t up-

st ream as swift water is no t something he is

familiar with and this hike is no t fo r beg in-

ners. ( you have been warned) . We made it to

t he confluence o f t he Rio Cubuy and the Rio

Icacos, which had a ser ies o f large swif t wa-

t er water fa l ls and hydrau l ic bo ils surround ing

us. There were a lso some deep water swims

which requ ired t ravers ing at t imes to make

sure we had the r ight ang le o f approach and a

way down just in case something happened.

Some bou lder c limbs we had to use webbing

and work as a t eam to counterba lance our-

se lves so we could leverage each other over

t he boulders. I t was beaut ifu l t o be immersed

in t he ra in fo rest swimming in 65 degree wa-

t er with t he t emperature at a humid 75 de-

grees surrounded by waterfa lls and an amaz-

ing view o f t he ocean from where we were.

We kept go ing unt il we go t to t he main

water fa l l. This water fa ll you can see from the

road 5 miles away and accord ing to t he map,

t his water fa l l appears to be around 200 feet

o f e levat ion, with a 30 to a 40 degree ang le

at po int s. We had lunch and dec ided to f lank

the fa lls t o t he r ight . We found ourse lves

bou lder ing over s lipper y rocks and thick

vegetat ion that had sk in ir r it at ion proper t ies,

t ho rns, and smal l caver n like ho les in be-

tween these bou lders, one wrong footho ld and

you can go tumbling down into a ho le and get

stuck in a ver y hard to reach sect ion o f t he

jung le. “And this was go ing so well” I sa id

befo re we found ourselves in t his he l l ho le.

We dec ided to t urn back but rea lized ver y

qu ick ly that we lost our t raverse, so now we

had to negot iat e and p lan each st ep and we

mo ved ver y caut ious ly back down. One st ep I

took my foot went t hrough the shrubbery and

I caught myse lf be fo re s lipp ing into one o f

t hese night mares. Knowing the r iver is t o our

r ight we aimed in t hat direct ion to t he r iver

and found ourse lves ha lfway up on a bou lder

t hat act ed as a she lf over t he water fa l l. I re-

member saying to Pat , “how did we get so

lucky”! We found a spo t where we cou ld get

out o f t hat mess, get our bear ings and con-

t inue to ascend the water fa l l t o a sect ion ¾ o f

t he way up and had ano ther break to t alk

about what just happened and cont inue our

p lan. We cont inued back to t he r ight and

found the sect ion was too s lipper y so we

went le ft and WHAA…found a smal l t rail

t hrough the other side o f t he r iver . This sec-

t ion o f t he ra in fo rest fe lt like a highway

compared to t he le ft s ide.

We made a hast y c limb to t he top and me-

andered around the bend to descend back into

the water on top o f t he water fa l l. We d id it . I

rea lly was one o f t hose mo ment s wher e you

had to be there to underst and how the cha l-

lenge p layed out and the fee ling we had when

we made it over successfu l ly. We encoun-

t ered smal ler water fa l l cha l lenges bu t we

were able t o overcome those cha l lenges and

make it to t he p ipe l ine t rail in good t ime.

“Wow what an amaz ing hike”! Now that was

cascade route find ing, p lanning, and great

t eam work! We fo llowed the easy p ipe line

t rail t o t he top o f t he road where we walked

back down and got back to our camp. We

dr ied ever ything out and re -packed ever y-

thing fo r t he next sect ion o f t he t r ip ( t he

caves) .

I t can be a cha llenge to sleep in Puerto

Rico at night with t he ear -p ierc ing coq i frogs

a ll night long. They sound nice when there

are just a few but when there are hundreds o f

t hem surround ing your t ent all in d iso rder ly

and syncopated conver sat ion, it t akes t he

rhyt hm out o f your sleep process and into a

psychede l ic daze o f so r t s where you are not

sure if you are sleep ing or awake at t imes. I

am no t sure how many hours o f s leep we got

but we had to wake up 5:30 am At lant ic t ime,

which is 3:30 am Cent ra l t ime, so we could

get to t he other s ide o f t he is land to meet up

with cavers. We go t up, st ruck camp, and

st art ed meander ing our way down the moun-

t ain t o t he main highway. Mapquest was t ell-

ing me one way to get to Arec ibo . Pat ’s

Google Maps device was t ell ing us another

way to get t here, and with my exper ience be-

ing in Puer to Rico , I knew I had to t r ick my

GPS.

I t makes dr iving int erest ing when GPS

t ells us t o get o ff on a road and it is a com-

p let e ly d if ferent road than we are supposed to

be on. P lus t he GPS to ld us t o go down roads

that were not even there to get to a dest ina-

t ion!. Whaaa!!. . . We worked our way on the

highway towards San Juan so we can go west

and ran into a to ll syst em that we found to be

ver y confus ing. Not only do they charge a lot

o f money but t here are four different k inds o f

to ll syst ems where they wil l g ive you a card

i f in rep lacement o f g iving you change, or

you have to buy a pass t o go through the

to lls . I shou ld have just act ivat ed the to ll at

t he car rent a l and got t he insurance too.

We made it to Arec ibo an hour ear ly so we

had to chance to casua lly prepare fo r t he cav-

ing phase o f t he t r ip and o rganize ever ything

in t he car . Je ff showed up to t he meet -up lo -

cat ion and I fo llowed him to the fir st cave,

Los Chorros. Los Chorros has two beaut ifu l

ent rances but one o f t hem requ ires t he use o f

rope to ent er t he syst em.

We parked our car and Je f f st ar t ed to ex-

p la in t o me that last t ime Amer ican cavers

went into t his syst em they were get t ing shot

at . PLUS, parking our cars at any cave in

Puer to Rico , means t aking the r isk o f broken

car windows and the ft so we had to br ing our

va luables and ever yt hing e lse is put in t he

t runk. We came this far so there was no stop-

p ing us. We walked up the hi l l fo l lowing the

water fa l l ent rance and c l imbed up into the

mouth o f t he cave. A boa const r ictor was

we lco ming us at t he ent rance to t he cave,

a long with o ther snakes, crabs, t he “guaba”

sp ider (which is a large t ail le ss non poison-

ous sco rpion the size o f bo th o f my hands) ,

and po isonous sco rpions.

We go t into t his act ive water syst em with

the t emp ins ide be ing 75 degrees with 100%

humid it y and the water t emp at 65 degrees. It

fe lt rea lly war m ins ide this cave. We st ar t ed

our t raverse and the wall passages were l ined

with fo rmat ions fro m flowstone to st alact it es

and st a lagmit es. We had to wade in water and

go under some small br ie f low a ir sect ions to

where the cave opened up into walk ing r iver

cave passage. Bat s were flying a l l over t he

p lace as t hey squeaked fro m a ll d irect ions

and flew in a chao t ic frenzy yet t hey were

aware no t to run into anyt hing( it appeared) .

We meandered around breakdown and go t to a

sect ion where we had to climb up into an up-

per passage where water carved out t ube like

sharp fo rmat ions under our feet . It ’s st il l

amazes me how water has t he power to slowly

evo lve rocks into some o f t he most amaz ing

features over mil lennia. We cont inued down

the passages enjo ying the features o f t he cave

and came to t he sump. The sump has been

reco rded as a dive in t he past with d ive line

but I was not able to get too much more in-

fo r mat ion about t hat . I don’t be lieve the re are

any more reco rds ind icat ing where the sump

leads to but it is fa ir y evident t hat all t he wa-

t er is coming fro m this sump.

We st ar t ed our t raverse out o f t he cave

and went down ano ther couple s ide passages

which were even narrower than the previous

canyo ns and the to rrent s o f water rag ing

through these smal l canyo n passages have

creat ed a mosa ic o f we ll -de f ined and sharp

scu lptures which were amaz ing to see. I

could hear my c lo thes t ear ing as I wou ld pass

by so me o f t hese fo r mat ions but we walked

over smal l water fa l ls and made it t o t he other

ent rance. I t was nice t o see that our cars were

st il l one p iece too . We made it out of t he

cave and got back to our cars without inc i-

dent . Thankfu l ly!

We drove through a small t own in Ar e-

c ibo to get to t he locat ion where we would

park our cars and walk to t he second cave

(Cueva Sorbetos). The ne ighborhood had a

few murders happen a few days previo us, so

we had to park the cars and get into t he rain

fo rest qu ick ly without caus ing a d isturbance

in t he ne ighborhood. We walked to t he

Tanama River and crossed the unusua l ly clear

water to get to t he ent rance o f t he cave. At -

t empt s have been made to block the cave us-

ing concret e but main ent rance remains open.


There is a smal l crawl in t he beg inn ing, but

once you pass t he crawl you are able t o st and.

We look up, around and at t he bot tom leve l

o f t his muddy cave, my jaw drops!. . . . . hang-

ing on the lower leve l a s far as I can see are

hundreds o f t housands o f whit e ca lc it e soda

st raws var ying fro m a few mil limeters to over

two feet in length!!

“We are fina l ly here,” I was think ing as I

st art ed my descent down into the lower leve l.

The passage is ver y s l ipper y and muddy but

we were able to get down to t he bot tom and

st are in awe at t he shimmer ing ca lc it e co l-

umns that were the s ize o f Par thenon co l-

umns, and the chande l ier rooms saturat ed

with these whit e soda st raw fo rmat ions. I

don’t t hink I have ever seen this many soda

st raws condensed into one cave l ike this ever ,

and I am no t sure o f any o ther place on ear th

t hat has t his k ind o f soda st raw co llect ion.

We cont inued to wa lk down the passage into

a breakdown room and into a large highway-

l ike co liseum passage with a st alact it e t hree

sto r ies high.

We viewed a p it t hat led to a sump, and I

was to ld that a dive was made into this sump

but it did no t render any favorable resu lt s.

We cont inued to t he end o f t he cave where a

breakdown mounta in has co llapsed a room,

but bu i lt a st a irway o f breakdown to t he top

leaving ano ther 50 ft to t he ce il ing. Wow!!

We t raversed back and took a s ide passage

route to more chande l ier rooms fu l l o f he l ic-

t it e soda st raw fo rmat ions that ext ended up to

6 inches from the main fo r mat ion, which

looked like ner ve connect ions. Aft er four

hours we exit ed the cave and washed o ff in

t he Tanama River . This cave far exceeded my

expectat ions and le ft me ponder ing how these

amaz ing syst ems exist in t he underworld o f

our planet .

We go t back to t he car and headed to a

ho tel t o eat and s leep r ight away to get ready

fo r t he next day o f caving wit hin the twin

g iant s, Evaporada and Humo. We actua lly had

a chance to s leep in a coup le ext ra hours to-

day due to t he fact t hat we got a hotel room,

two beds and c loser t o cave count ry in PR so

we d idn’t have to dr ive so far . We met up

with Tom Mil ler , Je ff Kruse, Kat r ina Kruse,

Richard, and Bro at a pastry shop near t he

Rio Camuy. We were really exc it ed to see

these two caves because I have heard they

have large passage rooms and we are go ing

into a sect ion o f Cueva de l Humo that is not

we ll vis it ed. We entered the property and the

landowners were a bit upset t hat we had a lot

o f cars with us but we were able to smooth

that over with t hem. We qu ick ly go t out o f

t he ir way and st ar t ed our t raverse around a

r idge bend into the fo rest and down the s ink-

ho le.

We walked up on Cueva Evaporada and it

was breathing fog. It was beaut ifu l t o see the

ent rance o f t he cave syst em, but we went to

t he other s ide o f t he s inkho le where Cueva

de l Humo is. This ent rance was just a lit t le

bit smal ler but it must have been hundreds o f

feet from the bot tom of t he lip to t he top. We

a ll ent ered the cave and swit chbacked down

to t he bot tom of t he monster syst em, and

when we fina l ly go t down we looked back out

and you could see the head lamps o f other

members mak ing the ir way down to t he main

passage. Once at t he bot tom we would shine

our light on the ce il ing and thousands o f bat s

t he s ize o f smal l ger bils f lew hundreds o f

feet up above our heads. At t imes it looked

l ike the ce i l ing was morphing into some k ind

o f sc i- f i pheno menon, as you heard the wind

mo ve fro m the ir wings a lo ng wit h the

squeaky co mmunicat ion these amaz ing crea-

tures had. At t imes you can fee l t he a tmos-

phere change a l it t le o r fee l a s light breeze

fro m the bat s flying around. Cr icket sounds

echoed in t he lower sect ions o f t hese cathe-

dra l rooms that are able to fit 15+ sto ry

bu i ld ings. I pondered to myse lf how the bat s

could fee l our light shin ing on top of t he

ce il ing which wou ld st art t his mass mo ve-

ment o f bat s down the passages.

We st ar t ed our climb up into the main

ha l lway passage as we passed anc ient f low-

years o ld. Ever ything was g igant ic in t his

cave and I cou ld only imag ine how nature

creat ed these mass ive rooms. We cont inued

down the main passage wit h a carbon dioxide

meter and went down slopes over some water,

into more mass ive rooms and cont inued to

t raverse down this mo numenta l passage . The

guano was thick and at some po int s it may

have even fi l led p it s ins ide the cave and cre-

at ed br idges t o get from one s ide to t he other ,

but we could no t confir m that .

We came to a rest r ict ion that had mult ip le

p it s and a t yro lean t raverse set up. The prob-

lem wit h this set up was that it had been

t here fo r over 20 years, most o f us d idn’t

have ver t ica l gear , and i f t he rope were to

break we would tumble down one o f t he 25 -

foo t pit s . It would no t have been good fo r me

to be injured in Puer to Rico at t he bot tom of

a p it . Not having my ver t ica l gear and my

own rope, I opt ed to not cont inue and nobody

e lse wanted to go fir st eit her . So we turned

around back out o f t he cave enjo ying the ge-

o logy o f t he cave and a ll t he inhabit ant s. In

some sect ions you could t ake a st ep and

worms wou ld pop out o f t he ground a ft er

each st ep, and other places we found sco rpi-

ons lurk ing around under rock she lves.

We c l imbed back out and went over to

Cueva Evaporada. Cueva Evaporada is on the

other s ide o f Cueva de l Humo and is par t o f

t he Rio Camuy syst em. These two caves are

at t he upper sect ion o f t he syst em which goes

fro m the Rio Evaporada through Cueva de l

Humo, and apparent ly we can exit Cueva de l

Humo into Cueva Ange les, which connect s to

t he tour ist sect ion o f Rio Camuy and down

into Sist ema Bocaza de l I nfier ni l lo , where

Ponor 1,2,3 exist , which eventua lly emerges

into t he Rio Camuy r iver .

We entered the cave which looked like the

top part o f t he ent rance had t eeth fit fo r a

mo nster , and as we were wa lk ing into this

beast o f a cave the views were ju st spec t acu-

lar fro m the ins ide out . One o f t he best views

I have ever seen ins ide a cave EVER. We

cont inued into this mass ive passage and came

into a large room wit h two eyes at t he ce il ing

the allowed light to shine in like a spot light

down into the ground leve l. The fo r mat ions

looked anc ient and the room echoed with the

rever b o f an opera house. We cont inued to

c limb up an anc ient flowstone into a moun-

t ain room, which appeared to end in break-

down. We t raversed back and up to t he r ight

to go to t he second ent rance, which is a s ink

ho le with vines and a large t ree growing out

o f t he s ink.

I t reminded me o f t he movie Sanctum , but

inst ead o f find ing a t ank we found a micro

ra in fo rest ins ide this s inkho le. I t was spec-

t acular t o find this locat ion, as we were able

to climb out o f it to view fro m the top and

crawl through s ide passages to view foss ils . I

was drank a l l my water and st ar t ed to dr ink

Pat ’s water and realized I was get t ing l ight -

headed from the high humid it y and t empera-

ture ins ide this cave. Luck i ly we were c lose

to t he ent rance, so we t raversed back and

s lowly took our t ime coming out o f t his

amaz ing cave.

Last day o f caving we checked out o f the

ho tel and went to t he pastry shop to meet up

with the rest o f t he cavers fo r t he day. Pat

and I had a conversat ion about swift water

t echniques. Pat was concerned about swim-

ming in t he cave so I made a flo t at ion device

out o f my backpack fo r him so he wil l be able

to float sa fe ly while t ravers ing this cave. Po-

nor in Spanish mean Los ing River and this

cave is known to have ext reme flash floods.

I t is a par t o f t he Infer il lo Syst em which is a

connect ion to t he Rio Camuy Syst em. We

parked our cars and entered into the cave and

qu ick ly saw a lo t o f garbage on the cei l ing,

inc lud ing a re fr igerato r and other heavy de-

br is only ver y st rong water could carr y

through this syst em. The cave was no t ver y

decorat ed but we were to ld t here were a

spr ink ler , a beach area, and a pond wit h a


Rico’s water syst ems rea l ly are and how pow-

erfu l water is in genera l. We came back to

t he car ear ly and figured this is a hike we can

do fo r next t ime we co me back. We went to

buy red na i l po lish and at t empted to cover up

the scrat ches in t he car which turned out to

no t work too well, so we relaxed near a beach

rest aurant and went to t he El Yunqe North

d ist r ict to swim a bit and pack a l l o f our gear

up and s leep. We woke up pret ty ear ly and

made it t o t he a irpo r t pret ty qu ick ly just to

make sure we d id no t run into any snags get -

t ing there. We dropped o ff t he car and they

d idn’t say anyt hing about t he scrat ches o r

about any to lls so I hope it st ays like t hat .

We go t to t he a irpo rt and sat down c leaned up

a bit and had a nice lunch ponder ing just

what t he he ll happened and how fast t his t r ip

went . We got a chance to go to some o f t he

most amaz ing p laces in Puerto Rico , and now

we were go ing back to t he mainland where it

was 85 degrees co lder . This t r ip was one o f

t he most amaz ing exper iences I have ever

been on and I can’t wa it to go back next year .

this out . We got about 500 feet into t he cave

to a locat ion where there was a p ile o f gar-

bage, a dead animal, chemica ls on the sur-

face, and drug bo t t les flo at ing around. From

the t ime we spent in Puer to Rico , we man-

aged to get some open wounds and on top o f

t he flash flood dangers and swimming pro fi-

c iency we dec ided to t urn out o f t he cave and

headed to t he commerc ia l sect ion o f t he Rio

Camuy at t he st at e park.

The commerc ia l sect ion was int erest ing to

be in because ever yone was c lean, we ll - r est ed

and exc it ed to t ake a t ro lley down to t he

commerc ia l cave. I t was a bit expens ive to

get in but it was ver y int erest ing to see this

sect ion, which turns out to be a very beaut i-

fu l sect ion o f t he cave syst em, and where we

would have washed out o f if we got caught in

a flash flood. We took this t ro lley down and

were t alk ing to people around us about where

we have been, which p iqued the ir int erest ,

s ince this was the first t imes in a cave fo r

many o f t hem. The t ro lley took up to t he en-

t rance, and it was ano ther nice ent rance

(pavement o f course) which took us around

and ins ide the large dome room. The light

ins ide the cave gave a nice overview of t he

s ize and mass t his room has which was an-

other nice aspect o f go ing to t he commerc ia l

sect ion o f t he cave. We made it around to t he

r iver po rt ion and exit ed the cave re laxing and

ponder ing how nice it would have been to

have a t ro lley t ake us down some o f t he other

sect ions o f t he syst em.

We made it back up to t he vis it o r center

and I soon found myse lf surrounded by a

c lassroom fu l l o f chi ldren ask ing me ques-

t ions about caving and the sect ions o f t he Rio

Camuy Syst em we have been into . Apparent ly

t he people we were t alk ing to were t eachers

and they wanted us to t alk to t he ir student s a

bit about our adventures and what caving is

l ike. Once we le ft t he locat ion we headed

back to t he El Yunque to live out t he las t day

o f our vacat ion, re lax a bit and t raverse t he

Rio Cubuy.

Last day in Puer to Rico and we were

pack ing up our gear fo r t he flight ho me and

think ing about how the he l l we are go ing to

f ix t he car fro m the scrat ches t hat showed up.

We dec ided to c lean up in a water fa l l sect ion

o f t he Rio Cubuy and t raverse downst ream

fo r a morning hike be fo re fix ing up ever y-

thing. We no t iced the clouds ro ll ing in and

d idn’t want to be caught in a fla sh flood com-

ing down this easy cascade hike. We mean-

dered a bit over boulders and smal l water fa l ls

t il l we got to a car pushed into the corner o f

t he cut bank in t he r iver . I t was an eye

opener to see this car co mpacted into box o f

st ee l. This made me wonder how wild Puerto


go through the t ight squeeze wit h po r t ions

be ing be l ly crawl, a bit more on hands and

knees (st rong knee pads requ ired) , and a lit t le

stooping. About 40 percent o f t he group

turned around and backed out aft er about ha lf

way in fo r var ious reasons. Al l o f t hem are

good reasons and it was import ant (and a l-

ways wil l be import ant ) to be consc ient ious

o f your limit at ions. Never fee l pressured to

cont inue when you don’t fee l r ight , and I re-

spect ever yone fo r having the r ight st at e o f

mind by do ing just t hat . Lot s o f acc ident s

come fro m people who fee l peer -pressur ed to

cont inue. We cont inued on and the crawl

st art ed turning into a s lot canyo n. It cont in-

ued to get deeper unt il it opened up into the

main canyo n passage. That crawl appears to

have been an anc ient water fa ll t hat would

feed the main canyo n passage.

We maneuvered le ft , which was a bit s l ip-

per y, and the wrong move cou ld send some-

one down into the canyo n 10 -15 ft . be low.

We made it to t he confluence and checked

our bear ings. We dec ided to find the RPI pas-

sage, which proved to be a cha llenge, but we

were able to find a wet st ream passage which

we fo llowed up st ream unt il t he st ream got

narrow and deeper . We cont inued downst ream

and proceeded under t he main passage, which

we found out actually became the main pas-

sage. The passages were darker in co lo r and

the water made int erest ing keyho le cut s,

sharp she lves above us, and sca l lop like wave

cut s into t he rock which made the narrow ra-

vine passage a beaut ifu l scu lptured mosa ic o f

co lo r and st ructure. I was impressed with the

sca le and geo logy Wayne 's Cave has t o offer .

Aft er go ing through a few large break-

down rooms the canyo n got deeper and nar-

rowed even more. We dec ided to t ake the

high ground and fo llow the she lf unt il t he

canyo n cut in-between our t raverse. Aft er

care fu l cons iderat ion we dec ided to make a

descent from the she lf s lope with a guide line

o f webbing and drop down to t he bot tom of

t he canyo n which was about 5 -6 ft . from the

l ip o f t he bo t tom she lf sect ion to t he canyo n

f loo r . It was a good cha l lenge and we a ll

worked together to make sure ever yo ne was

able t o get down sa fe.

We cont inued down the canyo n into more

breakdown rooms. Some o f t hese ce i l ings

must have been 30-40 feet up with large

bou lders keyed into some o f t he narrow sec-

t ions which were qu it e int erest ing to see. We

entered a breakdown room and had lunch. It

Blowing Ho le Cave is locat ed in southern

Ind iana, and is over seven miles o f r iver cave

and s ide passages that connect s to Bink ley

Cave, mak ing this cave a part o f t he Bink ley

Syst em. Dave E ver ton and I went into t his

syst em to pursue a poss ible sump lead and

shor t survey work. I was having neck spasms,

p inching my nerves, so I dec ided it would not

be a good idea to go swimming around in a

sump. We ended up do ing a t r ip t hrough waist

deep water , t hrough a water fa l l, and int o the

upper passage. The geo logy changes fro m

mud- banked r iver passage to walk ing on

rocks with sharp wave- like rock passages,

s leeper rocks underwater fo r your shins to

bang into unless you have a wa lk ing st ick,

and dark coat ed walls t hat eat up light but

g ive the at mosphere o f t he cave a unique per-

sona lit y. I love r iver caves so I had a lot o f

fun t ravers ing through the r iver syst em,

t hrough the water fa l l and into the upper pas-

sage. I am ver y surpr ised that t his cave goes

fo r over 7 miles ; you can ser ious ly take a

kayak through a good port ion o f t his cave. I

wore a 7mm wet su it , boot s, and gloves as t he

water was 54 degrees. Due to my neck I took

o ff so me o f my s ide light s on my he lmet and

was no t able to get t he best pictures I wanted

but t he t r ip was fant ast ic and it was great to

have a day wit h a good fr iend .

On December 16 fo r me was a t r ip into

t he histo r ic Wayne’s Cave, Monroe County. I

woke up fee l ing a lit t le bet t er and will ing to

g ive Wayne’s a sho t knowing I might have to

t urn back due to my neck. Phi l Go ldman was

able to t alk me through it a bit and I came to

rea lize t hat it is ju st muscu lar pa in and not

an actua l injur y so I was ext ra caut ious and

mo ving s low. I met up with Phi l Go ldman,

Molly Go ldman, Dor ian Goldman, Noboru

Sakabe, Scot t Smemo, Liz Davis, Pat Davis,

Meghan Davis, and Laura Sanga i la. We a ll

le ft together and go t to t he property a round

10 AM. We went t hrough a br ie fing and en-

t ered Wayne’s cave at 10:30 with the he lp o f

webbing used as a gu ide l ine. We a l l knew

that t his cave was a bit more advanced with a

chance o f get t ing lost , so we paid ext ra at t en-

t ion to where we were on the map. We soon

found out t hat we walked r ight by the famous

crawl passage and into a few dead ends, so

t aking it s low was impor t ant . We st arted to

was 1:30, and we d iscussed that we would be

back at t he crawl exit by 3:30. The dec is ion

was made to t urn around to give us t ime to go

back to where we st art ed and look fo r t he fo r-

mat ion rooms as we l l a s g ive us t ime to get

back out o f t he canyo n. One at a t ime we

c limbed out o f t he canyo n; ever yo ne d id a

fant ast ic jo b in c limbing out as it was a cha l-

lenge. I went la st as I knew my shoes had no

t ract ion and if I were to s lip I d idn’t want to

creat e more anxiet y fo r t he c limb out fo r eve-

r yone e lse. Unfo r tunately I d id s lip and

made sure I immediat e ly ro lled like a cat

with my legs fac ing down so my feet , knee

pads, hands, and a ro ll on the ground all took

just a smal l po rt ion o f t he fa l l as I opposed

fo rces to t he walls wit h my hands and feet

and it worked great . Pract ic ing how to c limb

is a lways import ant as we ll a s lear ning how

to fa l l ( I t hrew those shoes out as t hey were

no use anymore) . I quick ly go t back up and

thrust ed myse lf t hrough ever yt hing and got to

t he top.

We t raversed back to t he crawl in good

t ime. We had an ext ra hour to spare so we

went looking fo r t he RPI passage and fo rma-

t ion rooms and found that we were bas ica l ly

go ing in c irc les. I was to ld t he map was a bit

confus ing but we went back to t he water pas-

sage and I got in t he water to see if it could

be pushed and made the dec is io n to t urn

around s ince the water fe lt like it was a round

53-55 degrees and hypo ther mia cou ld set in.

We ended up mak ing the dec is io n to exit and

took our t ime in t he crawl. We made it out at

exact ly 3:30 pm where the others ce lebrat ed

our exit with caver cheer . We were ver y c lose

to Camp 2 as I realized once we got back and

could have kept go ing but conservat ism over-

ru led that idea. Plus we can a lways come

back and keep pushing on. I want to t hank

Danye le Co t t rell, Chr is Parks, and Dave

Ever ton fo r t he ir support as well fo r t he map.

I am espec ia l ly proud o f each member o f our

group fo r coming together as a t eam, work ing

SULLIVAN ’S TRIP

Sullivan’s Cave Januar y 12, 2013

A t r ip to Sull ivan’s cave was dec ided

upon and qu ick ly took shape as people st ar t ed

to chime in on the ir int erest to go into this

cave. We p lanned fo r a 10 to 12 hour t rip in-

s ide the cave and coordinat ed e ffo r t s to en-

sure we had a fant ast ic exper ience in t his

cave.

Phi l Go ldman, Mo lly Go ldman, Dor ian

Goldman, Laura Sanga i la, Scot t Smemo,

Adam Haydock, Laura Oliver , Noboru Sa-

kabe, Tom Janas, Bob Lippo ld, Jo rge Barrera,

and Pat Davis a ll coordinat ed to be on the

road head ing south by 6 am cent ral t ime. We

stopped to meet up with more member s o f t he

group and a lso meet other member s as we

were dr iving on the highway to get to t he

cave as fast as we can. The convo y entered

the Sull ivan property and we had ever yone

together .

The group gathered the ir gear , t ied the

hand l ine into t he 7 - foot drop and we went

t hrough our int roduct ion br ie fing. We a l l en-

t ered the cave at around 12:30 Cent ra l t ime

without any problems.

We st art ed to fo llow the beaut ifu l s lot

canyo n passage and inst ead o f fo llowing up

with some o f our int ent ions the backbreaker

was above us we cont inued to fo llow a c rawl-

ing passage wit h so me water unt il we st ar t ed

to get into a mis-o r ient at ion o f le ft and r ight

hand passages. We cont inued to meander t he

s lo t canyon passages which had so me int er -

est ing rock st rat if icat ion and st ream passages

be low. I t was easy to get t urned around in

t his sect ion as I t hought we were mak ing a

c irc le back to t he ent rance, and other fingers

were po int le ft and r ight as t he way to go.

This is when caving beco mes int erest ing !!

We dec ided to t urn around as t his passage

was no t t he way to t he back breaker and make

a t raverse back to where we saw the “ho le in

t he ce il ing”. We soon found ourse lves in t he

end less crevice which was in it se lf int erest -

ing as we were confused where we were once

aga in. We o r ient ed the map got our bear ing

and I det ermined there are only a couple o f

passages in our area where we are fac ing in

t hat part icu lar bear ing. We back t racked our

posit ion to another smal l confluence which

had ano ther confluence just to t he southwest

o f t he passage. I st art ed e liminat ing opt ions

and got a sense o f bear ing, d irect ion aft er

Noboru gathered info r mat ion on passages

around us. It became evident t hat we have to

go through a chosen un named passage which

d id no t look famil iar but we ended up back

the back breaker .

go back with bet t er shoes. We were a t t he

Backbreaker connect ion fo r a ha lf hour due to

complicat ions wit h t he rusty lock but man-

aged to get back on t rack and went

southbound to t he T -Room.

We went into t he Merry-Go-Round Room

and go t to see the water fa l l flowing s ince

there was a lo t o f snow melt . We cont inued to

complet e a t raverse back to t he T -Room to

pursue the Mountain Room. It was a pleasant

surpr ise t o have nice wa lk ing passage a ft er

hours o f const r ict ion fo r t he group go ing to

t he Mountain Room. We made a crawl to a

dead end but found ourse lves go ing into the

Mountain Room, and wow what a nice s it e to

see! Large breakdown creat ing a high ce il ing

up to 64 feet was a nice exper ience.

We found the lower st ream passage that

was light ly flo wing as we entered the lower

connect ion passage to t he Y -Room. This pas-

sage has so me int erest ing sca l loped water cut

rock fo rmat ions wit h breakdown to wa lk

over . The ce il ing passage became larger and

so we went fo r higher ground and came up to

t he r iver passage.

The lower r iver passage is a nice large

highway l ike condu it t hat was up to wa ist

deep 54 degree water. Some member s o f t he

par ty st ayed back as we t raversed to the Y -

Room, where we could hear rapid water exit -

ing fro m the north. This was a bit more o f an

observance ca ll s ince the pour -over had some

decent push to it , reversa ls were in t he cut

banks and if t he water leve ls were st rong

enough than they can sweep you o ff your feet

and t ake you downst ream. Noboru crossed the

r iver and we fo llowed a ft erwards. Luckily t he

f low not to st rong and min imal s leeper rocks

underwater to st ep over but it will be wise to

have a hand line t ied on to t he fir st person so

i f someone does get swept o ff t he ir feet t han

leverag ing them back to sa fet y wil l be eas ier .

Laura O. , Laura S., Phil, Dor ian, Noboru,

Jo rge, and I made it across and found a mud

s lide to our le ft but chose to t raverse across

t he st ream aga in to t he fina l sect ion where

were no more mud banks but r iver .

We dec ided to t urn back to t he rest o f the

group and we made it back to t he c limb out

connect ion back into the Mountain Room and

d iscovered that t he water in t he st ream was

st art ed to flood rapid ly. Ever yone st ayed

ca lm and co llect ive as we a l l c limbe d out

back into the mounta in room and back into

the main walk ing passage.

We dec ided to look fo r t he Grand Canyon

Room, yet we were not able to find the r ight

passage lead ing to t he sect ion but rather we

made it to a breakdown room while on our

way to t he Spira l Room. We had a d iscuss io n

and dec ided to slowly turn back out of t he

cave so we could get t ime to eat , relax, and

get some s leep fo r t he next day.

As we made it back to t hrough the Back-

breaker and out o f t he cave, we got t he exit

and no t iced that a ll t he water fa l ls were f low-

ing wit h a beaut ifu l shimmer and unique

sound. There is so mething about cave water -

fa l ls t hat t ease t he imag inat ion as t o how

some o f t hese passages wit h sharp contours

have deve loped over mil lennia o f eros ion and

t ime. It is a pr ivi lege that we get to observe

the water works o f today that cont inue the

const ant and evo lving nature o f eros ion that

scu lpt amaz ing pathways to connect new geo-

graphica l sub landscapes o f our Midwest re-

g ion.

We le ft t he cave at around 10:30 and

ce lebrat ed a wonderfu l day wit h caver cheer

and good vibes.

In ce lebrat ion o f t he Mart in Luther King

Jr . ho liday and the Monday vacat ion day that

st at e workers rece ive, I dec ided that would be

a good t ime to go caving. Our group set out

fro m Chicago on that Sunday the 20 t h and

headed down to Bloomington, Ind iana.

May’s Cave

We arr ived in Bloomington around noon

and proceeded to meet Chr is Parks, our Ind i-

ana caving counterpart . The Chicago cohort

cons ist ed o f myse lf (To m), Ken Redeker , No-

boru Sakabe, Laura Oliver , and Laura San-

ga ila .

I had made ar rangement s with t he land-

owner be fo rehand and he knew we would be

ons it e and to ld us t hat we could park by the

bar n and animals. As a s ide no te, I ’ve been

to ld not to ask permiss io n fo r t his cave

unless you’re rea l ly go ing. The landowner o r

at least t he caret aker (Mr. Orman) was ver y

k ind and s imply request ed a few pho tos fro m

the t r ip as he has never actually been in t he

cave, a po lit e request t hat I am happy to fu l-

f il l . As far as find ing the cave, we had a

rough map to t he park ing spo t . It was a lit t le

dece iving at fir st due to t he descr ipt ion o f

t he bar n and such that t he map leads yo u to a

Bloomington “subur b” wit h rather large and

nice houses. Could there be a barn and cave

here? Well, a ft er some s leuthing, we discov-

ered a long dr iveway that leads to t he back o f

t he houses and the “bar n” and park ing area

next to some horses. It ’s about a 10 -15 min-

ute walk fro m the cars t o t he cave which is

s it uat ed just to t he no r thwest . You could

a lso get access to t his cave from other park-

ing areas. As it was be low 32 degrees out-

s ide, t his wa lk was co ld.

The cave ent rance is beaut ifu l and soon

a ft er ent er ing you come to about an 8 - foot

water fa l l w it h a slipper y so mewhat broken

wooden ladder to ascend into the water fa l l.

We ascended and to ent er t he cave. This

cave is most ly smal l wa lk ing o r stooping key-

ho le passage with few turns. There is a small

st ream under foot at all t imes and you walk

upst ream away fro m the water fa ll. Small rat

ho le crawlways o ff t he main passage t end to

lead to small muddy enc laves about 4 feet

deep and 10 feet long. One such ho le is

marked wit h a bit o f rope fo r a hand l ine as

t he crawl is about 2 feet above your head.

This crawl in par t icu lar is s l ight ly wet , t ight

only at t he end, and leads to a smal l muddy

room. The main passage o f t he cave ends in

crawling passage that is t oo small t o pass.

The cave must have been heavi ly vis it ed

at one t ime because there is a lo t o f gra ffit i

present in t he cave. As it is c lose to a road

and ver y easy once you ascend the water fa l l,

I can imag ine this t o be a loca l secret par ty

spot . On the br ight s ide, t here were many

bat s in t his cave. I est imate t hat in t his small

cave we probably encountered eas ily we ll

over 100 bat s.

In tot al we were underground in t his cave

about 2 hours. The walk back to t he cars was

freez ing as t he t emperature had dropped and

the warm sun o f t he aft ernoon was no longer

out . By the t ime we got back to t he cars, our

cave c lo thes were frozen. Next t ime, I sug-

gest br ing ing your change o f c lo thes t o t he

cave ent rance. There is p lent y o f room to

change there.

K ing Leo Pit Cave King Leo Pit Cave is locat ed about two

hours south o f Bloo mington in t he Orchard

Ridge area o f t he Crawford Upland. The en-

t rance p it is a 47 - foot drop locat ed on the

s ide o f a gent ly s lop ing r idge a short walk

fro m the parking area. Even though this was

Ken and mine’s second t r ip to t he pit to -

gether , it took just a lit t le bit o f searching to

f ind the ent rance aga in. Once we found it ,

Ken r igged the drop while I went to get No-

boru who was st il l o ff searching fo r t he en-

t rance. The p it was blowing war m a ir t hat

fe lt rea lly nice as t he ambient a ir t emps were

at or near freez ing. Need less to say, we were

a ll anxious to get into t he warm cave. No-

boru was the first to descend, t hen myse lf,

and fina lly Ken. Ken had st ayed back to snap

some pho tos o f t he descent . I t hink he got a

pho to o f me descend ing the p it t hat is ident i-

ca l t o one he took the year be fo re.

I ’ve read that t he 47 - foot drop can be fr ee

c limbed us ing a be lay o r hand l ine, but I

don’t recommend it . There were lo t s of bat s

hang ing in t he p it and we were carefu l no t to

d isturb them. I mmediat e ly a ft er t he ent rance

p it , t here is a ser ies o f domep it co mplexes

which requ ire you to first sk ir t a smal l p it

be fo re ent er ing a smal l do med room. We

rest ed in t his do med room befo re ent er ing the

240- foot crawl. The crawlway in King Leo’s

is actua lly a t ight canyo n passage with sev-

era l leve ls. You need to st ay at t he top o f t he

r idge and most ly be lly crawl unt il yo u can

f ind the connect ion to t he main boreho le pas-

sage. The crawlway has a few twist s and

turns, but nothing too bad. There are no ex-

t remely t ight sect ions, but it ’s p lent y o f work

to crawl t hrough with maybe 1 -2 ft . ce il ings.

Once you reach the end o f t he crawlway,

which beco mes fa ir ly obvious that you are

no t go ing to be able t o cont inue crawling in


front o f you, drop down to t he lower leve l. It

took us about 1 .5 hrs. to get to t his point in

t he crawl as we were navigat ing as we went

as to not miss t he c limb down (and I am a

s low caver /crawler . Noboru was eas i ly t he

fast est o f t he group. )

At t his po int , we went back just a lit t le ,

maybe 15 feet o r so to find a ho le where we

could r ig a hand line to he lp with t he c limb

up. Turned out we wouldn’t need it , but it

he lped menta lly. At t he bo t tom of t he crev-

ice, you can exp lo re just a lit t le crawling to a

s light ly larger room that you would think is

t he cont inuat ion o f t he cave, but it isn’t .

You need to go back to where you drop down

and find a connect ion in t he midd le leve l o f

t he canyo n ( there is a smal l black ar row on

the ce il ing near t his po int ) . Pass t hrough the

connect ion and drop down to a short hands

and knees crawlway. Aft er a short crawl, you

pop out into a huge beaut ifu l bo reho le.

Emerg ing fro m this crawl onto a breakdown

p ile , you can see that t he bo reho le runs in

bo th direct ions. The boreho le is about maybe

20 feet wide wit h ce i l ings rang ing fro m 15 -20

feet t all. At some po int s, t he ce iling is as

t all a s 40 feet . This passage is marked by

roof co llapse and scat t ered breakdown piles

and is about 2000 feet in tot al length. Aft er

t he crawl, I found this large boreho le to be

ver y reward ing.

From the ent rance o f t he bo reho le, you

can go in e it her d irect ion. To the no rth, t he

bo reho le goes about 1000 feet and ends in a

breakdown p ile . To the south, t he bo reho le

a lso cont inues fo r about a 1000 feet and ends

in a large bit o f flowstone and breakdown.

As we had a check in t ime to make, we were

a bit hurr ied to exp lo re t he bo reho le and then

exit t he cave o r at least make it out o f the p it

so t hat we could ca l l and check in wit h our

sur face contact . We d id no t plan fo r t he two

hour dr ive to get to t he cave fro m Blooming-

ton and had thus ly shor t ed ourse lves o f ex-

p lo rat ion t ime. We went no rth in t he bo re-

ho le f ir st which cons ist ed o f ver y p leasu rable

wa lk ing passage that a semi t ruck could dr ive

in i f it cou ld go over t he occas iona l break-

down p iles. Upon reaching the end of t he

no r th passage, we headed back down south in

t he bo reho le to see the flowstone at t he south

end. We reached the south end qu ick ly and

took some pho tos by the flowstone.

By the end o f t he pho to shoot , I was t ired

enough to fee l l ike head ing out even without

t he t ime crunch so we made our way back to

t he large breakdown p ile in t he midd le o f t he

bo reho le which connected to t he crawlway.

We t imed the crawl on the way back and it

took us 45 minutes to exit t he crawl and get

back to t he domepit co mplex next to t he en-

t rance. Once there, we took a break because

we knew we wou ld make it out on t ime to call

our surface contact . Aft er a br ie f res t , we

dec ided to frog out t he ent rance p it . It was

freez ing co ld out side and I was glad I had

le ft a stocking cap by the ent rance. We a l l

went back to t he car to change into war m

c lo thes and winter jacket s be fo re de -r igg ing

the p it . Upon subsequent ly returning to t he

vehic le a ft er de- r igg ing, a ll my gear (cave

su it and boot s) had frozen. We quick ly

bagged and threw the frozen gear in t he t runk

and st ar t ed the heat er fo r t he dr ive ho me.

King Leo Pit Cave is a ver y enjo yable

cave past t he crawl and wil l provide you with

3-4 hours o f caving fun.

10 YEARS AGO IN THE SPELEONEW S

On Saturday, March 15, 2003, long - t ime Cave

Research Foundat ion cavers Rick Toomey and

Elizabeth Wink ler were marr ied at t he CRF

Hamilton Valley center , out side o f Mammoth

Cave Nat iona l Park. Rick and E lizabeth now

l ive in Tucson, Ar izona, where Rick has been

a Cave Resources Spec ia l ist at Kartchner

Caverns fo r t he past two years.

Jenny and I actually ar r ived at CRF on Fr i-

day, and the fest ivit ies were a lready in fu l l

swing. This was the "rehearsa l d inner " and

bache lo r par ty ro lled into one, and ther e was

p izza and other goodies. In add it io n to us,

WCG was represented by Fred and Sandra

Schumann, and Alan Wellhausen. Former

grot to member Kr ist e Lindberg, now o f

Bloomington, Indiana, was a lso there.

By the t ime the 2 p.m. ceremony began, over

100 cavers, family members, and fr iends had

converged on CRF. The s ight o f so many

cavers dressed up in su it s was qu it e unusua l.

I t was a beaut ifu l day, wit h t emper atures

around 70 degrees. The ceremony it se lf was

s imple and last ed around 20 minutes. The

best man was Rick Olson, a cave natura list

fo r Mammoth Cave, who m I 've known in CRF

fo r over 15 years.

Fo llowing the ceremony, t he rows o f cha irs

were moved, and t ables were set up for t he

recept ion. I t was cat ered by none o ther t han

WCG's Alan Wellhausen, who has been cook

fo r many CRF exped it ions. The food, which

inc luded kabobs, was exce l lent . Champagne

f lowed free ly, and par t ying cont inued into

the night .

The next day. Rick and E lizabeth and the

wedd ing par ty go t into t he ir finest once aga in

fo r some actua l in-cave wedd ing pho tos in

near by Diamo nd Caver ns. A good t ime was

had by a ll. Congratu lat ions to t he newlyweds!

sure could no t keep my ba lance.

Four people t ook an act ive par t in my p repa-

rat ion fo r t his t r ip: Henr y, David Anderson,

John Hein and Jack T ho msen. T hey he lped

me with gear , shoes fo r caving and food…

We t rave led in Harvey’s t ruck a lmo st 12

hours be fo re ar r iving at Car lsbad Caver ns

Nat iona l Park on November 7 at night . I fe lt

an ag it at ion because I never went caving to-

gether with Amer icans in an unknown cave,

t he first be ing Car lsbad Caver n, be fo re. The

f ir st st range thing fo r me was the way which

things were done. Our caving began with

descend ing to 750-foot depth us ing the fast -

est descender - -speed e levato r! Okay, it ’s

Amer ica ! But aft er only 5 minutes o f wa lk-

ing, you are ins ide the beaut ifu l wild cave

with stone flowers o f aragonit e bushes and

o rgan music o f l imestone st alact it es and st a-

lagmit es. In t he case o f spor t caving this

cave isn’t d iff icu lt , ju st severa l p it s inc lud-

ing the 220- foot pit in t he st ar t ing po int o f

wild caving, but it is one o f t he mo st beaut i-

fu l caves I ’ve seen!

The main goa l o f our exped it io n was the

study and geo log ica l descr ipt ion o f survey

st at ions o f t he Far East part o f Lechugu il la

Cave. One o f t he mo st beaut ifu l p laces in

t he cave is, fo r sure, Nir vana and the fit ure

o f Buddha-- t he Pear l o f E mpero r’s T hrone

Room. Imposs ib le t o be lieve that t he only

creato r o f it is - -Nature! Sixt y miles o f vir -

g in beaut y: end less and unrepeatable. Frag-

i le aragonit e bushes, snow whit e gypsum

fo r ms, purp le l imestone st a lact it es and st a-

A new organizat ion, Bat Conser vat ion Int er -

nat iona l, was recent ly est abl ished fo r t he

spec if ic purpose o f bat conservat ion. The d i-

recto rs are Dr. Mer lin D. Tut t le , who gave a

t alk on bat s at a WCG meet ing a few years

ago , and Dr . Rober t E. St ebbings.

Bat Conser vat ion Int ernat iona l came to my

at t ent ion, when I rece ived a f lyer in t he mai l

descr ibing the majo r t hreat s to bat s and what

t his o rganizat ion hopes to accomplish. Be-

s ide the we ll-known threat s o f d isturbance,

habit at dest ruct ion, and pest ic ides, t he f lyer

ment ions another t hreat . In t he t ropics many

large fru it . bat s are eat en by humans, c reat -

ing a lucrat ive t rade that t hreat ens bat popu-

lat ions.

While member ship does not inc lude a fancy

publ icat ion, it is de f in it e ly a worthy cause.

Regu lar membership is $25 per year , and stu-

dent memberships are $15. All member ships

I ment ioned so me info r mat ion on Squ ire

Boone Caverns, in t he southern par t o f Harr i-

son County, Ind iana, in a previous t r ip r eport

and thought t hat fur ther info r mat ion might be

most int erest ing. Wit h this in mind, I have

co rresponded with the owner and learned the

fo llo wing.

The cave it se lf is t o open in t he lat e spr ing o f

1973. Pr io r to commerc ia l izat ion, t he cave

had one low, water - fi l led, t rough- like en-

t rance. A new, higher ent rance has been

blast ed through 23 feet o f so lid rock. Aft er

go ing through about 125 feet o f wind ing pas-

sage, t he tour ist wil l ent er Recept ion Hall, a

chamber t hat is 120 feet across, 70 feet wide,

and 73 feet high. To cross t his chamber , I

underst and the co rporat ion is present ly bu i ld-

ing a 57- foot - long st ee l br idge that will be 50

feet above the chamber floo r . Lot s o f cascade

fo r mat ions and st a lact it es and st alagmit es are

in t his upper sect ion, and r imstone fo rma-

t ions are featured in t he lower sect ion. A

st ee l st a irway and cement wa lks will br ing

the tour ist to t his lower sect ion. Near t he end

o f t he tour , one wil l ent er t he Rotunda Cathe-

dra l, with a co lumn fo r mat ion st ret ching from

f loo r to ceil ing. The he ight is 80 feet , and the

fo r mat ion is c la imed to be 3 mill io n years

o ld. (Februar y 1973)


Discovered severa l years ago by members o f

t he Cent ra l Ohio Grot to, t he ent rance o f

Flut e Cave is locat ed among bou lders 200

feet south o f t he Third Ent rance o f James

Cave. The ent rance room was exp lo red and

mapped by COG in 1954 as a poss ible route

to t he “o ther” s ide o f Forty Fathom Pit in

James. But ne ither t he ir exp lo rat ions in Flut e

no r t he ir e ffo r t s in James per mit t ed them to

reach the “other” s ide o f t he p it .

Recent d iscover ies in James ind icat e t hat

Flut e is a par t o f t he main cave syst em on

Ba ld Knob. Wit h this in mind Bob Thren,

Herbe in and Herr exp lo red Flut e dur ing the

summer in 1962 while J im Rodemaker and

Ted Wil l mapped Raccoon Ramble in James

ant ic ipat ing a connect ion between the caves.
