THE CHURCHMOUSE Windsor Presbyterian Church February 2020 To the Flock . . . What a month this has been! It has been a time of pain and healing, patience and frustration, rest and restlessness. Most of you know that I was in a bike accident on Christmas and am thankfully on the mend. Since many of you have asked, I will share the story of my accident here. As a warning, if you don’t want the painful details, please skip over this next section and go right to the good parts. The Bike Accident Christmas Day, you may remember, was warm and full of sunshine. In the afternoon Stephen, Mad- eleine and I went for a bike ride on the trails around town. Along the way, Stephen split off and went for a longer ride. As we got close to home, Madeleine and I each headed in our own direction for the last few blocks. I recall giving thanks to God for such a beautiful day, the opportunity to be on the bike, the strength of my body…. Gratitude and joy filled my soul and a prayer of thanks was on my lips. Riding down my street, I noticed my neighbors playing basketball with their young son. It made me smile and I gave them a little wave. I was keeping my speed slow, feather- ing my brakes, looking to make sure no cars were coming. Turn- ing the corner, my back tire be- gan to slide and I knew I was go- ing to fall. As the bike was going down, I tried to stretch out and lay down along my side, to protect my head and joints. In an instant, I was face down on the pave- ment, my ears ringing so loud I could barely hear. The neighbors called out then came to check on me. As I tried to speak with them, I could tell that my jaw was broken. They got Stephen. As he looked me over, he noticed blood coming from my ear. He wrapped me in a warm coat and we headed to the emergency room. There they confirmed that my lower jaw was broken in 4 places, my upper jaw had some shattering and my brain was concussed. Surgery to wire my jaw was planned for the next day. Opportunities and Gratitudes Though I wish I could go back in time and avoid falling, or at least fall better, I am confident that God will bring many good things out of this for me, my family and even our church. I have much to be grateful for—I am alive, my injuries are limited to my mouth area, and both my body and my brain will mend. I have had the opportunity to be humbled by the healing power of prayer and the overwhelming love and support of so many. I can’t do all the things I am used to doing. The benefit of this is the space and opportunity for oth- ers to use their gifts in the service of the church and the kingdom. Our ministries and programs will only grow stronger as others necessarily step up. Though I may be having a season of fallow, the congregation surely is not! Being without voice is possibly one of the most humbling challenges a pastor can face. Though I can speak, I cannot project my voice and am diffi- cult to understand. This opens up the wonderful possibility of hearing from other preachers. A huge thanks to Cindy Ray, Rev. Sue Tomlinson, Dick Woods, Rev. Sheldon Henderson and Roberta Vic- tor for preaching over the last month. In the coming weeks, we will have the opportunity to hear from our Interim Executive Presbyter Amgad Beblawi, as well as two retired Presbyterian ministers, Bob Houser and Ken Rummer. I have called in favors to get some of the most respected, faithful and wise ministers in the Presbytery to come and share God’s word with us. I pray God will bring many blessings through this time of listening to new voi- ces faithfully proclaim the gospel. pain and healing, patience and frustration, rest and restlessness. Most of you know that I was in a bike accident on Christmas and am thankfully on the mend. Since many of you have asked, I will share the story of my accident here. As a warning, if you don’t want the painful details, please skip over this next section and go right to the good parts.

The Bike Accident

Christmas Day, you may remember, was warm and full of sunshine. In the afternoon Stephen, Mad-eleine and I went for a bike ride on the trails around town.

I was keeping my speed slow, feather-ing my brakes, looking to make sure no cars were coming. Turn-ing the corner, my back tire be-gan to slide and I knew I was go-ing to fall. As the bike was going down, I tried to stretch out and lay down along my side, to protect my head and joints. In an instant, I was face down on the pave-ment, my ears ringing so loud I could barely hear.

Opportunities and Gratitudes

Though I wish I could go back in time and avoid falling, or at least fall better, I am confident that God will bring many good things out of this for me, my family and even our church. I have much to be grateful for—I am alive, my injuries are limited to my mouth area, and both my body and my brain will mend. LEARNING

The adult Sunday School class would love to have you join them for study and spiritual growth on Sunday morn-ings at 9 AM in the Ward Hall.

Would you like to take a closer look at the week’s scrip-ture? Then join the bible study on Mondays at 9:30 AM with Pastor Shamaine and friends. This is a rare oppor-tunity to discuss biblical issues with not only our own pas-tor, but other local scholars and Windsor friends as well. Come for a lively and thoughtful conversation.

Our children help in worship every Sunday. Afterwards they are invited to participate in crafts and a lesson at the table in the back of the sanctuary. Babies and toddlers can play in the soft area in the back of the sanctuary dur-ing worship as well. Michal King and Kaitlin Mogel care for the children.

Joint confirmation classes with First Arabic Presbyteri-an and Ankeny Presbyterian churches are held at the three churches on Wednesday evenings at 6:15. The cur-riculum is “Big God, Big Questions.”

SERVING The next opportunity to serve dinner at Children and Families Urban Movement (CFUM) at Trinity United Methodist Church is on Thursday, February 6. If you would like to join us, we would love to have you. We need volunteers at Windsor PC at noon that day to help prepare the meal. We need donations of veggies, desserts, and milk, or dollars to purchase the grocer-ies. We need six to ten hardy volunteers to help deliver the meal to Trinity United Methodist Church at 4 PM, serve the meal and do clean up afterward. We are

done about 6 PM.

Join us then or for any one of the other meals we have scheduled throughout the year. Our dinners are sched-uled for the first Thursday in each month. Sign-up sheets are on the counter just inside fellowship hall. Questions? See Jim or Linda Newsom or Jayne Owen.

The Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990 with a simple prayer said by Reverend Brad Smith at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina: “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without

a bowl of soup to eat.”

The Souper Bowl of Caring utilizes Super Bowl weekend in America to mobi-lize young people to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. Its vision is to transform the Big Game into America's largest youth-led time of giving and serving. Young people collect monetary and food donations during the weeks leading up to and after Super Bowl Sunday. 100% of the money and food is then given directly to local charities of the group's choice. The youth will collect this offering on Sunday, February 2.

Session Highlights - Angie King

Session began with reading and discussing Luke 5: 1-11, which recounts Jesus meeting the fishermen, Simon and An-drew, who had caught no fish despite toiling all night. Jesus told them to go out into deep water. Simon said they had al-ready tried and found nothing, “but at your word, I will let down the nets.” And we know what happened: they caught so many fish that their boats began to sink. With Pastor Shamaine recovering from her accident, our Windsor family will need to venture into deep water and let down our nets to share the tasks and responsibilities to keep our church sailing along. Accepting new challenges and offering your many talents, we can continue to be the church together.

Ron was elected our representative to the Presbytery meeting in February. The Elders discussed the opportunity to host one of the Presbytery meetings this year and will have more conversation about this chance.

A representative from the Presbyterian Foundation of the PCUSA will be in the state and we would like to get on his schedule, if possible. He has been hired to help churches deal with property issues. If his schedule is full, we can ask him to return at any time to meet with us.

Training will be provided for officers with Bob Houser, a former Presbytery official, serving as Moderator. Dates have not been set.

Another reminder to check the bulletin board at the top of the stairs for Session information. Also, if anyone ever has any question or topic or concern that you would like Session to dis-cuss, please share with an Elder so your thoughts can be heard.

Windsor Presbyterian Church is connected to other churches in our community and around the world. In our community we support the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC). Nationally and around the world we are connected through

the Presbyterian Church (USA).

In 2019 we donated food items and $4,963 to DMARC Food Pantry. This food pantry assisted an average of 18,126 peo-ple per month in 2019. There are numerous volunteers every week. The organization obtains food by wholesale purchase, from in kind donations, from a food recovery program and from the Food Bank of Iowa.

In 2019 WPC members contributed $1,644 to the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering to reduce hunger, provide disaster assistance and support self-development programs. Nationally our de-nomination contributed $5,269,024. From our General Fund, WPC contributed $7,000 to PC(USA) General Mission. We are supporting mission workers and churches in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

Contact Rich Teig if you want to read the Presbyterian Mission magazines to learn more about churches in other countries, or how we are helping refugees and migrants around the world.

In the topsy-turvy world of Finance at Windsor, we had a positive month in December. Net Income for the Operat-ing Fund was over $8,600. Total Income ($23,341) was $10,800 over budget for the month. This was due mainly to receiving two large donations totaling $9,000, and also receiving welcome support from our members and friends with their regular giving.

Total Expenses ($14,715) were $2,200 over budget, mainly because of seasonally related amounts expended for personnel, mission and worship. The Capital Fund had small amounts of Income and Expense during De-cember.

Personnel reviews did not get completed during the month. We will be working on those again in January and February.

The Land Acquisition and Sale Committee entered in De-cember to an agreement with Mick Grossman (a commer-cial realtor) with Keller-Williams Realty, to list the property south of University. The contract for his services is for six months with a 6% commission if and when the property is sold.

We look forward to a positive and bountiful year for Wind-sor in 2020.

Winter Weather Policy: We follow the Des Moines Schools’ weather closings. If school in DM is cancelled, our church office will be closed and activities here will be cancelled. If the schools cancel evening activities, we will cancel ours, as well. We will not cancel worship on Sunday mornings, but use your own judgment about coming. Be safe.

The snow and ice of winter have arrived, along with several reminders for our comfort and safety. The sidewalks will be cleared after snow falls, but melting and refreezing will create slippery spots in some places. The crosswalks and parking lot can be especially slick, please ask for assistance if you need help getting to and from your car.

Our furnaces need time to bring the temperature back to a comfortable level, so feel free to bring your coat into the sanc-tuary.

thoughtful and also serves to encourage me to get back on my bike when spring comes and the jaw is healed! I am grateful beyond words.

Last week, the surgeon took off the wires and put in rubber bands to hold my jaw together. The add-ed movement has caused me to be in much more pain. The plan is to wear the bands through the first week of February, then to start having some time without those. In three weeks, I will have a small surgery to remove the hardware from my mouth, then we will begin the evaluation of my teeth for what repair, replacement and reposition-ing needs to occur. That is the part I am most anx-ious and the least knowledgeable about, so please share any advice, referrals, or other helpful infor-mation.

Again, thank you for your patience, compassion and generosity as I heal. Though I am not yet able to do all that I did before, I trust that God will show us ever new ways to be in ministry together. May God bless (even this) season of our life in Christ together!

Do You Know What

the PC(USA) Logo Represents?

The Cross represents the incarnate love of God in Jesus Christ, his passion and resurrection. Because of its associ-ation with Presbyterian history, the Celt-

ic cross was chosen.

The Book represents an open Bible, the role of Scripture as a means of knowing

God’s word.

The Dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit, also symbolizes Christ’s baptism by John and the peace and wholeness which his death and resurrection bring

to a broken world.

The Pulpit captures the important role of preaching in the history of Presbyteri-

an worship.

The Fire conveys a double meaning: a symbol of revelation in the Old Testa-ment when God spoke to Moses from the burning bush, and the beginning of the Christian church when Christ mani-fested himself to his apostles at Pente-cost and charged them to be messen-

gers of the good news of God’s love.

The Trinity is represented by a triangle, suggesting the nature of Presbyterian government, with its concern for bal-

The official seal of the Presby-terian Church (U.S.A.) was

adopted in 1985. At first glance it looks like a cross, but it is in-tended to capture some of the important emphases of the Re-formed tradition. This information was adapted from the PCUSA

website.

ance and order, dividing authority be-tween clergy and elders and among

different governing bodies.

The Fish, an early Christian sign for Christ, lies within the shape of the de-scending dove, recalling his ministry to

those who hunger.

The Cup is in the lower central part of the image, representing a communion chalice or cup. It can also be identified as a baptismal font. Both are images of our sacraments. It is an ongoing sign and symbol of God’s presence with

us and working through us.
