The 25 U.S. gallon oil reservoir supplies oil to the pumps. Oil is cooled as it passes through the combination oil cooler and air conditioner condenser assembly at the rear of the machine. Design updates like smaller ducting and a single rotational wand backer help keep debris from collecting on the rear of the machine.

Better performance from the inside outThe streamlined exterior is only part of the story on the 400 Series Windrowers. They’ve been rebuilt from the inside out to give you more speed, more power, and more control.

At 200 horsepower*, the R450 and D450 are built around 6-cylinder, 6.8L John Deere PowerTech E engine. The 140 horsepower* A400 is powered by 4-cylinder, 4.5L John Deere PowerTech E engine.

Both turbocharged engines are Tier 3-compliant and engineered to meet the daily demands of your operation. Wet-sleeve cylinder liners extend service life, and daily fluid level checks can be done from a single location. In fact, most service points are conveniently located on the left-hand side.

Plus, new CAN bus integration makes trouble-shooting easier than ever. Technicians can easily access a service point to diagnose machine problems, cutting down on service time and expense.

The redesigned frame offers additional seven inches clearance, making it easier to straddle tall windrows without dragging crop. Plus, adjustable forming shields let you tailor windrow formation to crop and field conditions.

New side panels lift open for easy access to the engine and other key service point. Panels are made from a durable soy-based composite.

The new IntelliAxle responds to speed to deliver control in three modes:

Mode 1: At speeds up to 4 mph, rear wheels rotate freely to accommodate sharp turns and other low-speed maneuvers.

Mode 2: Between 4 and 8 mph, hydraulic cylinders attached to the rear steering arms begin to apply pressure, steadying the wheels.

Mode 3: The system is fully engaged to provide stability and control at speeds up to 21 mph.

Better handling at any speedIt takes more than speed to improve productivity. It takes control to cut a full header-width on each pass. It takes heavy-duty wheel motors to deliver the torque you need for rough terrain. It takes the power, speed, and handling that you get in the 400 Series Windrowers.

The key is the new IntelliAxle, a speed-sensing rear steering-assist system. At speeds up to 4 mph, rear wheels rotate freely for maximum maneuverability. As your speed increases between 4 and 8 mph, hydraulic pressure builds on the rear steering arms to steady the wheels. Above 8 mph, the system is fully engaged for stability and better handling.

Front wheels are powered by heavy-duty Sauer-Danfoss® drive pumps for increased torque, and planetary final drives send that power to the ground. You get usable power that puts you in control on the roughest, hilliest fields.

AE50 Award We’re not the only ones talking about the new IntelliAxle. The 400 Series Windrowers were awarded an AE50 Award by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

The AE50 award honors innovative inventions in the agricultural, food, biological, and related fields. Only the best products introduced into the marketplace in a given year are selected by a panel of peer experts. Products chosen are expected to save producers time, costs, and labor while improving user safety.

994 and 995 Rotary Platforms

Better protection for your rotary unitMake the R450 Rotary Windrower even more productive with a John Deere rotary platform. With a field-proven rotary cutterbar and the protection of our shear hub, they have the what it takes to deliver a clean cut in tall, thick and heavy crop.

The low-profile, modular cutterbar works at a flat angle, reducing the chance of damage to the cutterbar, especially in uneven or rocky fields.

And, like all John Deere rotary cutterbars, this platform comes with exclusive shearhub protection to safeguard the cutterbar’s internal gears.

The 994 Platform is available in 13-foot and 14-foot, 6-inch working widths, and the 995 Platform offers a 16-foot working width. Adjustable forming shields on all platforms allow you to adjust windrow formation to meet crop and field conditions.

A smarter way to protect. Replaceable wear caps protect the knife hardware. They’re open on the end so debris can’t pack in tight around the nut. Hardware and knife changes are easier and faster.

Smooth and smart. Each module has two larger idler gears and one drive gear that run in oil. The large oil reservoir allows the disks to run quiet and cool, even with a knife tip speed of 191 miles per hour.

Brawn to go with the brains. The patented, diagonal-cut modules are made of nodular iron. Eighty-five percent stronger than gray iron, nodular iron is more impact resistant.

A cut above the rest. The thin, low-profile, modular cutterbar lets you cut low with a flatter cutterbar angle. A flatter angle reduces wear on components and limits the chance of damage in rocky fields.

A smarter way to safeguard. Gears in each disk are protected by a patented John Deere shear hub. If you hit an obstruction tough enough to stop the disk, splines on the hub will shear, safeguarding the gear drive. Repairs take minutes rather than hours.

994 and 995 Rotary Platforms

Shear hub protection! Each cutting disk is attached to a specially designed driver on the splined pinion gear. The

driver has part of its splines removed so that it shears when the disk hits a solid object. This shearing protects the

internal cutterbar components. Replacing a shear hub is considerably easier (and far less costly) than repairing or

replacing a cutterbar.

Easy cutterbar removalThe John Deere cutterbar features individual modules with a patented diagonal design. Each module slips in and out individually. Just remove seven bolts. Notice the other modules remain attached to the cutterbar frame as the single unit is removed. The cutterbar can stay on the machine during module removal. The diagonal-cut profile makes alignment easy; reattach the bolts and you’re done!

896 Auger Platform

Better durability with heavy-duty components Heavy-duty components deliver long-lasting performance with the 896 Auger Platform. Larger bearings in the knife drive case are better able to handle heavy loads, increasing durability. The knife case is reinforced for greater strength and durability. Knives are driven by Kevlar™-reinforced belts that outlast chain and resist stretching and breaking.

The twin-knife design uses two counter-stroking knives to deliver a clean cut and reliable performance. Timed double augers distribute crop evenly across the entire platform for uniform conditioning, and an easy-to-adjust swathboard gives you control over windrow formation.

Kevlar is a third party trade-mark, used with permission.

Large, over-serrated knives are chromed for extra strength. The back sections are heat-treated for even longer wear life. Choose standard over-serrated knives for use in a variety of crops, or order twin-point or coarse-serrated sections through the Parts Department.

896 Auger Platform

The one-piece sickle head is made of cast gray iron for durability and consistent cutting. Needle bearings in the knife head give a large bearing surface to for greater durability.

Available non-clog guards (right) turn a tangled mess into terrific forage. They are designed for thick, wet, tangled conditions. The knife tip is always exposed to slice through the crop. Standard two-tine guards have a narrow profile to prevent material from bridging over the cutterbar. Both guards are made from double-hardened forged steel to reduce bending and breaking.

Remove plugs without leaving the cab. If you do manage to plug the 896 platform, just raise the platform completely and engage the platform reverser switch. Conditioning rolls, augers, and reel all slowly reverse, freeing the plug. After the plug is cleared, disengage the reverser switch, lower the platform, reengage the platform, and resume cutting.

Conditioning Systems

Better–and more–conditioning choicesYour crop and field conditions differ from your neighbor’s. So why do some manufacturers offer only one choice for conditioning your hay? John Deere offers up to four, depending on your cutting platform.

Tri-Lobe steel rolls have three intermeshing chevron lobes that crush the length of the stem for improved conditioning and faster dry down.

Urethane rolls stay straight across the entire width of the machine for even conditioning. Intermittent recessed cleats provide extra crimping power.

Impeller conditioners, available only on rotary platforms, work well in crops that are under four feet tall when cut. They can be adjusted easily for top conditioning in a variety of crops and field conditions.

V-10 rolls bring the benefits of roll conditioning to extra-tough crops, like sudan, sudex and cane, without overpowering other crops like alfalfa or grass. They’re perfect for custom operators who subject the machines to above-average hours.

Conditioning Systems

Adjusted properly, impeller conditioning can significantly reduce drydown time. Evenly spaced V-shaped tines are mounted on a rotating tube. As soon as the hay is cut by the disks, the tines carry it through the machine. The hay rubs against itself and against a specially designed, adjustable conditioning hood. This rubbing action removes the waxy layer from the stems, allowing moisture to evaporate faster.

Intermeshing steel flutes on the all-new V-10 rolls put the rush on drydown. Designed for thick-stemmed crops and high-hour operations, these rolls provide consistent conditioning that maintains crop nutrients, even in the most demanding conditions.

Exclusive 105.5-inch urethane conditioning rolls on the 995 and 994 Platforms (100-inch rolls on 896 Platform) feature intermittent recessed cleats. Urethane is molded at a cool temperature, so the steel core won’t warp. Rolls stay straight to help hay dry evenly.

John Deere exclusive Tri-Lobe rolls crush the entire stem of the plant, reducing curing and bleaching in alfalfa, while speeding drydown in heavy, thick-stemmed crop. Their intermeshing chevron-patterned, high-strength steel design cuts down on wear. And replaceable end shafts make for easier, less costly repairs

Better draper integration with the NEW D450 With its increased hydraulic power and turbo-charged 200-horsepower* John Deere PowerTech E engine, the new D450 brings the performance and handling of the 400 Series to your small grain harvest.

The D450 is compatible with the same 600D Draper Platforms that are available for our combines, including the 40-foot 640D Platform. A CommandCenter™ display gives you accurate, integrated control while you swath.

Heavy-duty planetary drives and final drives give the D450 extra durability in the toughest conditions, but the ride stays smooth thanks to the IntelliAxle and larger front tires.

Better small grains harvestingA dual-knife system that gives you faster, cleaner and smoother cutting. The reel sweeps material onto the draper for smooth feeding. A redesigned cutterbar profile allows you to cut as low as 35 mm (approximately 1.5 inches) from the ground. Taller belt cleats, wider belts, and an optional auxiliary top auger to keep bushy crops moving across the platform. The 600D draper platforms are built for high-performance reliability.

Cutterbar Tilt – A center-mounted hydraulic cylinder lets you tilt the cutterbar from the convenience of the cab, so you’ll get the optimum cutting angle and the lowest possible cutting height.

This exclusive hydraulic height-sensing system lets you increase the hydraulic pressure so the cutterbar will float over the ground. Adjustments are made from the cab. With the low, 1.5-inch cut height, this system is a winner in down, tangled crop.

A better cab for working long daysThe 400 Series Windrowers have a comfortable new cab to go with their streamlined look. From user-friendly displays to the updated controls and hydro-lever, the new cab focuses on delivering a comfortable operating experience for long days in the field.

A tilt-and-telescope steering column and Comfort-Command™ air-suspension seat adjust to fit any operator. The CommandARM™ keeps frequently used controls within easy reach. And if the new cab and controls look familiar, that’s because they are. The redesign makes the cabs on the 400 Series very similar to the cabs on other John Deere harvesting equipment, like Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters and Combines, making it easy for operators to move from one machine to another.

Easy-to-read Primary Display Unit (PDU) makes it easy to monitor machine functions as you run. The full-color screen display on the right-hand cornerpost shows essential machine information, like fuel level, engine temperature, and platform or reel speed.
