What’s Happening?

On July 14, 2015, Microsoft will end support for Windows Server 2003.

Here’s why this is a really big deal for you and your customers:

• After July 14, 2015, users of Windows Server 2003 will not receive any updates or patches to combat security issues

• Support on Windows Server 2003 applications and programs, as well as phone support, will be discontinued

• For businesses who rely on credit card processing, their systems will not pass compliance with Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards

• Without compliant systems, vendors like Visa® and MasterCard® may no longer do business with these companies

It’s simple. Businesses can migrate now to Windows Server 2012 on modern hardware for a more secure, fully supported system with active warranties and parts. In the process, they will gain the benefits of new technologies, such as virtualization, disaster recovery, affordable storage, and cloud connectivity.

Lenovo is more than an OEM. When businesses are faced with the impact of Windows Server 2003 end of support, Lenovo can be a valuable resource for information and guidance, as well as a trusted equipment supplier and migration planning partner.

The Risks of Inaction

4 5

SECURITY BREACHES Security patches and updates for Windows Server 2003 will no longer be available after July 14, 2015. Older servers will be more vulnerable to malicious attacks, leaving data and IP at risk.

DATA LOSS Without patches or updates, critical data may be at risk. FEMA estimates that up to 70% of small to medium businesses that experience catastrophic data loss will fail within 12 months.

NON-COMPLIANCE Businesses that are subject to regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), HIPAA, and PCI, may face stiff penalties and huge fines if they’re still running Windows Server 2003 after July 14, 2015. What’s more, businesses that accept credit cards may lose their merchant privileges if they continue to run on an unsupported operating system.

APPLICATION FAILURE When Microsoft support ends, applications running on Windows Server 2003 may not be recoverable if the OS fails. Users will not have access to the tools they need, which could paralyze business operations.

RISING OPERATING COSTS Older servers are more expensive to operate and maintain. They consume more power, generate more heat, and take up more space than modern servers.

Begin planning today for migration to Windows Server 2012 on modern hardware to avoid the risks associated with running Windows Server 2003 after July 14, 2015.

Discontinued support for Windows Server 2003 presents much more than an inconvenience or unexpected expense. Failure to migrate to Windows Server 2012 on modern hardware leaves businesses open to a number of potential risks.

No More Excuses

Procrastination is a common reaction to something as daunting as server migration. And you’re probably already hearing or thinking a lot of “What if…” excuses for putting off the inevitable. But doing so can have serious consequences.

Planning and scheduling the migration of critical applications running on Windows Server 2003 will take time. Your service provider’s time may be booked later, causing you to miss the end of support deadline and putting your business applications at risk of catastrophic failure.

Older servers cost more to operate, and the increased likelihood of application failure could be financially devastating for your business. What’s more, after July 14, 2015, your business would no longer be compliant with PCI standards, which would revoke your ability to accept credit card payments and effectively shut down your business.

After July 14, 2015, your applications running on Windows Server 2003 will not be supported. If your applications are that ingrained in your current servers, then it’s all the more critical that you begin planning your upgrade now.

When security updates for Windows Server 2003 end on July 14, 2015, vulnerable components will be susceptible to targeted attacks. Systems subject to regulation, like PCI, will be out of compliance, subjecting businesses to fines or revoked services. Business operations will be interrupted as a result.

If you begin planning your migration now, it will be easier for your services provider to work with your busy schedule and successfully complete the project before Windows Server 2003 reaches end of support on July 14, 2015.

EXCUSE REALITY

There’s still plenty of time before support is discontinued. I can wait.

New systems cost too much.

My current infrastructure is running fine.

My applications are too engrained in my current servers.

I don’t have time to upgrade.

The Opportunities That Await

The current IT mindset and need for server migration among SMBs has created a perfect opportunity for Lenovo to increase sales of ThinkServer systems.

Here’s a quick overview of the SMB server landscape:

Between support for Windows Server 2003 coming to an end and the majority of SMBs expressly seeking virtualization, there is a huge opportunity for Lenovo to replace millions of old servers with new ThinkServer systems.

New systems can help your customers avoid the security, compliance, data loss, operating cost, and application failure risks associated with running an expired OS while also providing the virtualization that businesses desire. Lenovo is in an excellent position to deliver a high-value solution when businesses need it most.

Most importantly, with 3,200 servers being upgraded each day, the opportunity presented by Windows Server 2003 end of support migrations is more than $4 billion in North America alone. The time to act on this opportunity is now.

THINKSERVER IS PURPOSEFULLY DESIGNED FOR THE SOFTWARE-DEFINED INFRASTRUCTURE AGE ThinkServer systems are designed to host server and storage virtualization as well as support the most demanding workloads. Lenovo’s open business model complements this open software approach with support for businesses that want to explore all manner of innovation that might benefit them and their customers.

Upgrading to new ThinkServer systems can help improve staff efficiency because they work with existing industry standards for system and data center management tools. This means ThinkServer systems are easy to install and deploy, making them good “team players” in any business’s data center. Lenovo recognizes operational efficiency is one of the top customer requirements and its new ThinkServer systems are designed to deliver on that goal.

Support is going to end for Windows Server 2003 whether action is taken or not. Businesses should seize this valuable opportunity to upgrade to Lenovo ThinkServer systems and start enjoying all the benefits they provide. So, why choose a ThinkServer?

Why Switch to ThinkServer Systems?

Why Switch to ThinkServer Systems?

THINKSERVER OFFERS GREATER RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCEThinkServer systems are designed and tested to the industry-leading THINK-quality standards for which Lenovo is known. The result is less unplanned downtime. ThinkServer also has outstanding storage capacity and connectivity options, providing the flexibility to meet unique or changing IT demands.

ThinkServer systems include components that are built to withstand the test of time, such as capacitors that have a 10- to 20-year duty cycle, which is more than double the 6-7 year lifecycle of the competition. Lenovo also designs its ThinkServer systems to weather almost any conditions by testing higher temperature and humidity extremes to ensure that these servers are more tolerant of environmental variances.

Windows Server 2012 supports nearly instant recovery from disasters through Hyper-V Replica.

THINKSERVER PROVIDES SUPERIOR ENERGY AND SPACE-SAVING EFFICIENCYDid you know that servers that are more than 4 years old deliver only 4% of the performance of today’s best servers while using 35% more energy? The current lineup of ThinkServer systems, on the other hand, run exceptionally quiet, cool, and efficient.

These servers are able to support increased workload capacity using Spread Core cooling, which increases cooling efficiency by 20%. Plus, Intel® Xeon®-based ThinkServer systems pack so much processing power into such a small amount of space that you can actually deploy up to 40% more servers per rack.
