Genealogy & Marketing role As of 2015, the following Windows families are being actively developed

Windows NT: This operating system for server computers and workstations. It now consists of three operating system subfamilies

i. Windows: The operating system for personal computers. The latest version is Windows 8.1.

ii. Windows Server: The operating system for server computers. The latest version is Windows Server 2012 R2.

iii. Windows PE: A lightweight version of its Windows sibling meant to operate as a live operating system, used

for installing Windows on bare-metal computers (especially on many computers at once), recovery or

troubleshooting purposes. The latest version is Windows PE 5.1.

Windows Phone: An operating system sold only to manufacturers of smartphones. The first version was Windows Phone 7. The latest version is Windows Phone 8.1. The main competitor of this family is Android by Google.

Windows Embedded: Initially, Microsoft developed Windows CE as a general-purpose operating system for every device that was too resource-limited to be called a full-fledged computer.

History In 1975, Gates and Allen form a partnership called Microsoft. In June 1980, Gates and Allen hire Gates’

former Harvard classmate Steve Ballmer to help run the company. The next month, IBM approaches Microsoft about a project code-named "Chess." In response, Microsoft focuses on a new operating system—the software that manages, or runs, the

computer hardware and also serves to bridge the gap between the computer hardware and programs, such as a word processor. It’s the foundation on which computer programs can run. They name their new operating system "MS DOS." ‑

MS DOS is effective, but also proves difficult to understand ‑ for many people. There has to be a better way to build an operating system.

Windows 1.0 1985 Basic gadgets, like the calendar and calculator or MS Paint and a word processor

Windows 2.0 1987 It is much better than the first window . While it did introduce two current staples – Excel and Word to users

Windows 3.0 1990 The introduction of virtual memory, improved graphics, and the ability to multitask helped propel Windows to sell 10 million copies.

Windows 3.1 1992 Windows 3.1 contained necessary fixes and improved font functionality.

Windows 95 1995 Marking the change from 16-bit to 32-bit, Windows 95 was designed for increased compatibility and ultimate user-friendliness. Windows 95 was offered on newer computers only because it lacked some backwards compatibility at first.

Windows 4.0 1996 Windows 4.0 was released in 1996 with minor improvements and is not considered a major Windows release.

Windows 98 1998 Windows 98 included improved hardware and hardware drivers, Internet Explorer, and eventually, Internet connection sharing. First release designed specifically for consumers, as opposed to the business or technology set.

Windows 2000 2000 Windows 2000 made everyone's lives easier by increasing the number of plug and play devices compatible with the operating system.

Windows XP 2001 The system designed for ease and stability and it gave users the ability to consume a number of different types of media.

Feature

Windows Vista

2006 Widely considered a flop in technology circles. It had high system requirements and suffered issues with performance and security. The operating system also tended to drain laptop batteries.

Windows 7 2009 For this current release of Windows, Microsoft learned its mistakes with Vista and created an operating system with speed, stability and minimal system requirements.

Windows 8 This latest Windows release is getting a lot of attention. With its redesigned user interface and Windows Store, this version is, once again, redefining what Windows is. It also comes with integrated antivirus protection, a virtual hard disk and a new platform based on HTML5 and JavaScript. It promises faster boot time, touchscreen compatibility .

Windows 8.1 Windows 8.1 advances the Windows 8 vision of providing a powerful collection of apps and cloud connectivity on great devices. Windows 8.1 includes new and improved features like Workplace Join and Work Folders

MAC vs. Windows:

Compatibility: While the main operating system for Apple is OSX, and PCs operate on Microsoft Windows. Both systems continue to develop faster and more powerful.

Cost : PCs dominated the budget-friendly market.

Memory : Most PCs have anywhere from 2 GB to 8 GB of RAM in laptops and desktops, while Macs usually have only 1 GB to 4 GB. Keep in mind, this is for standard models, not custom orders.

Hard Drive Space : Macs typically have smaller hard drives than PCs

Availability : Macs are exclusive to Apple. This limits Mac availability. PCs, on the other hand, are available from a wide range of retailers and manufacturers.

Software :Both systems support most open-source software. Software for both systems is user friendly and easy to learn.

Development and Distribution

Linux is developed by Open Source development i.e. through sharing and collaboration of code and features through forums etc. and it is distributed by various vendors.

Developed and distributed by Microsoft.

Manufacturer Linux kernel is developed by the community. Linus Torvalds oversees things.
