New Start Menu

New start menu icon:

Windows 10 brings back the familiar Windows desktop and Start menu from Windows 7—enhanced

with new capabilities to boost your productivity.

The start menu provides access to advanced system tools such as Power Options, Task Manager,

and Control Panel. Just right-click the Start button to display system tools.

Task Bar

Show Desktop At the very bottom, you can also enable Peek to quickly preview the desktop when you move your

mouse over the Show Desktop button. The Show Desktop button is still at the very far right of the

taskbar and is now a tiny slice you can barely see.

Action Center With Windows 10, you now have more control over your new and improved action center, where all

your notifications appear. Don’t miss out on updates due to system time-outs.

With this new action center, you’ll find:

A persistent list of Windows notifications, so that you can view and address them at times of

your choosing, without even having to open the related app.

A list of quick actions so you can access your most-used settings and apps instantly, like Wi-Fi or

brightness.

To open the action center, select the action center icon in the area at the far right of the taskbar.

Connecting to Wi-Fi

To connect to a Wi-Fi network, select the network icon on the taskbar. If you prefer a wired

connection, you can use an Ethernet cable to connect your PC to your router or modem.

Start Menu Tiles Start menu tiles can be organized however the user wishes.

Ways to customize tiles:

Drag and drop tiles anywhere in the start menu tile spaces

Resize tiles by right-clicking a tile and choosing the resize option

Create group names for tiles by moving an app's tile up or down until a group divider appears,

and then release the tile and name the group.

The screenshot below shows a customized start menu with different tile sizes, locations, and groups.

File Explorer

Quick Access Quick Access has replaced the Favorites section in the new Windows 10 File explorer.

When File Explorer opens, you'll land in Quick access. Your frequently used folders and recently used

files are listed there, so you won't have to dig through a series of folders to find them. You can also pin

your favorite folders to Quick access to keep them close at hand.

If you want a folder to show up in Quick access, right-click it and select Pin to Quick access. Unpin it

when you don’t need it there anymore.

If something shows up in Quick access that you don’t want to see there again, right-click it and

select Remove from Quick access. It won’t show up there anymore, even if you use it every day.

File Explorer Ribbon The new Windows 10 File Explorer has incorporated a ribbon, just like in Microsoft Office products.

There are 4 different tabs at the top: File, Home, Share, and View. Each ribbon will provide functionality

options for the selected tab.

*My Computer is now called This PC and it won’t show up on your desktop by default.

To get to This PC in Windows 10, open File Explorer from the taskbar and select This PC in the left

pane.

If you want This PC to show up in your Start menu, open File Explorer, right-click (or press and

hold) This PC in the left pane, and then select Pin to Start.

*Create desktop shortcuts by dragging folders/apps to the desktop.

Task View

Task view: Many users know that you can press ALT+TAB to switch between running apps. Windows

10 has added a Task View button to the taskbar to make this feature more discoverable.

In Windows 10, multiple desktops are finally a built-in feature.

There are two ways to use this mode in Windows 10. Either click on the Task View icon on the task

bar, or press the Windows Key + TAB simultaneously. Either option will open the Task Viewer.

Example of Task View in Action

Click the task view icon to see all applications that are open.

Within task view you can create new desktops by clicking the new desktop button.

Once a new desktop has been created, you can drag and drop open applications into different

desktops. (hover over a desktop image to see the open applications)

Multiple desktops can allow better organization and productivity when multiple programs and

applications are opened. No more taskbar/desktop clutter!

Example: you may want desktop 1 to be for emails and web-browsing, desktop 2 can serve for office

work (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc). You can create as many new desktops as your computer can

handle. Just click the New Desktop icon at the lower-right corner of your screen.

Cortana

Cortana Enabled

Cortana Icon

Your personal digital assistant in Windows 10. This is the Siri of Windows 10.

To ask Cortana a question, start entering your question in the “Ask me anything” search box to the right

of the Start button. (Speaking to Cortana will require audio and microphone)

Cortana even gets to know you over time and uses your Microsoft account information to help you get

things done more efficiently without disturbing your productivity. The more she knows, the more she

can help. To give Cortana information about your work habits or interests, go to the search box on the

taskbar to open Cortana, and then select the Cortana notebook icon.

Cortana Disabled Disabling Cortana will change the icon to a magnifying glass – this is the search bar. You can type in

anything and Windows 10 will search your system and OneDrive.

Snap Assist Snap positioning “snaps” any open windows to a grid. This makes it easier to manipulate the layout

of open windows on your desktop. The enhancements to this feature also include consistent Snap

behavior across traditional Win32 and modern apps, and four-quadrant Snap, which enables you to

fill your screen with four apps in a two-by-two configuration by simply dragging each window to a

corner of your screen.

Task View works with Snap to make life easier

To use Snap: Push the Windows logo key and then one of the side arrow keys. The two side keys snap a

window to the corresponding half of your display. If you then use the up or down keys, Quadrants

activates and snaps the window to the upper or bottom half of that side.

Office 365 Microsoft Office 365 is the suite of cloud-based services and productivity tools—tools like OneDrive for

Business, which helps you work and collaborate wherever you are. Using OneDrive for Business, you can

synchronize a file for offline or online use. To use OneDrive for Business, you first need to log on to

Office 365 and create or open OneDrive.

On the Office 365 sign-in page (E365.dickies.com), enter your user name and select Sign in. Your

password is not required at this point, because the page automatically redirects to the Microsoft

SharePoint Online environment.

If your computer is connected to your corporate network, or if you’re working remotely and

your computer is connected to a corporate network through VPN, you’ll see the OneDrive for

Business page.

If you’re using DirectAccess to access your corporate network, or if your computer is not

connected to a corporate network, you’ll see this sign-in page:

If you’re offline, as soon as you connect to the Internet your file will be synced to OneDrive for Business.

Personalization In Windows 10, your settings menu got a makeover—and dropped PC from its name. Browse all the

features you can personalize by going to the Start menu , then to Settings and Personalization

. Some of these customizable features you will find there are:

Personalize your lock screen:

Experiment with changing the

background of your lock screen to a

favorite photo or slide show, or choose

any combination of status notifications

to show your upcoming calendar events,

social network updates, and other app

and system notifications.

Get started with themes: Choose from a

default theme or go online to download

themes featuring cute critters, holiday

cheer, and other smile-inducing options.

Change your desktop background and

colors: You can choose a picture worthy

of gracing your desktop background,

and change the accent color for Start,

the taskbar, and other items. The

preview option gives you a sneak peek

at your changes as you make them.

Microsoft Edge Microsoft Edge is your new and improved browser in Windows 10. It is

designed to deliver a better web experience. Here are some quick tips to

help you get the most out of Microsoft Edge:

Search: You can now enter any search directly in the address bar and you’ll get search suggestions

and results from the web, your browsing history, and even your favorites.

The Hub: Microsoft Edge keeps track of the things you collect on the web—including your favorites,

reading list, browsing history, and current downloads. Simply click the Hub icon to the right of

your address bar to see everything in one place.

Web Notes: Microsoft Edge is the only browser that lets you take notes, write, draw, and highlight

directly on webpages. Just select Make a web note near the Hub icon, and you’ll see a panel of

annotation tools including Pen, Highlight, Type, and Share. Save your Web Notes, and they are all

collected on the Hub to be shared with friends, colleagues, or even other programs such as

OneNote.

Reading List: Microsoft Edge includes Reading List, a place to save the things you want to read later.

Create your reading list by selecting the Reading List icon next to the address bar, and everything

will be stored in the Hub for when you’re ready to read.
