"GO BACK.." ALLOWED

• "Go Back To Windows ##" button

works for 30 days after you upgrade

to "Windows 10" (from "Windows 7"

or "Windows 8.1)

61

"GO BACK.." ALLOWED (continued)

• To make sure that the "Go Back.."

button works, do not delete the

Windows.old

folder on your C: drive.

61

62

UNEXPECTED COMPATIBILITY WITH

OLDER COMPUTER HARDWARE

• "Windows 10" is supposed to require

a processor (on the motherboard of

the computer) that has PAE, NX, and

SSE2

(See

http://www.zdnet.com/article/window

s-10-will-your-pc-run-it/ )62

63

UNEXPECTED COMPATIBILITY WITH

OLDER COMPUTER HARDWARE

(continued)

• However, our very own Dennis

McCormick has been about to install

"Windows 10" into TCS' old Dell

"Vostro 1500" laptop:

See

http://aztcs.org/meeting_notes/winha

rdsig/win10/win10-install1.pdf

63

64

CLONING VIRTUAL MACHINES

• Mac and Linux users often run

"Windows.." inside "virtual machines"

inside "virtual machine" programs.

When you fire up a newly-cloned

virtual machine for the first time, it

will ask you if you want to "Move" or

"Copy". You have to click on "Move"

in order to have a cloned "Windows

10" virtual machine that is activated.64

65

66

67

CLONING VIRTUAL MACHINES

(continued)

• Clicking on "I Copied It" is the "kiss

of death" for a "Windows 10" virtual

machine because it tells the

"VMware.." program to assign a new

UUID to the virtual motherboard of

the virtual machine.

67

68

CLONING VIRTUAL MACHINES

(continued)

• Clicking on "I Copied It" is okay for all

versions of "Windows.." prior to

"Windows 10", since all prior versions

of "Windows.." usually let you change

the motherboard of a computer without

triggering a "Your copy of Windows is

not genuine" event" (if you do not also

change the processor or the RAM at

the same time). 68

69

WINDOWS 10 PRIVACY ISSUES

• Even before its release on July 29,

2015 there has been a lot of

controversy about privacy issues for

"Windows 10".

You can adjust Windows 10's

settings and log in as a "local

account" to defend yourself against

many of Microsoft's privacy

intrusions.69

70

WINDOWS 10 PRIVACY ISSUES

(continued)

• Log in as a "local account" to turn off

Microsoft's main privacy intrusion

mechanisms.

• Adjust settings manually to turn off

privacy intrusions in "Windows 10"

• Use free software programs to manually

turn off privacy intrusions in "Windows

10"

70

71

WINDOWS 10 PRIVACY ISSUES

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

(continued)

According to

http://www.techrepublic.com/arti

cle/windows-10-on-an-old-pc-

when-it-comes-to-specs-how-

low-can-you-go/,

your processor also has to meet

some processor specifications:

77

<Start of quote>

Beyond the speed of processor, you

will also need a 32-bit or 64-bit CPU

that supports three different

processor features - PAE, SSE2

and NX. Windows 8.1 also requires

support for these, so if your

machine runs Windows 8.1,

chances are it'll run Windows 10.

<End of quote>

78

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

(continued)

These processor

requirements are actually

the stricter requirements

that Microsoft

implemented for "Windows

8" in May 2012.

79

DISADVANTAGES OF "WINDOWS 10"

According to

http://www.microsoft.com/en-

us/windows/windows-10-

specifications:

80

DISADVANTAGES OF "WINDOWS 10"

(continued)If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7

Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8

Pro with Media Center, or Windows 8.1 Pro with

Media Center and you install Windows 10,

Windows Media Center will be removed.

Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed as part

of installing Windows 10.

81

DISADVANTAGES OF "WINDOWS 10"

(continued)Watching DVDs requires separate

playback software ("Windows 10"

does not have "Windows Media

Center")

Two options for playing DVDs:

Free "VLC Media Player from

"videolan.org"

or

the "Windows DVD Player" app which

is free for some upgraded computers

83

DISADVANTAGES OF "WINDOWS 10"

(continued)

Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts

Games that come pre-installed on

Windows 7 will be removed as part

of installing the Windows 10

upgrade. Microsoft has released our

version of Solitaire and

Minesweeper called the “Microsoft

Solitaire Collection” and “Microsoft

Minesweeper.”

84

DISADVANTAGES OF "WINDOWS 10"

(continued)

If you have been running the "Start

Screen" of "Windows 8" or

"Windows 8.1", it will be gone by

default in "Windows 10" (but you

can get it back by turning on

"Table Mode".

The "Charms bar" of "Windows 8"

or "Windows 8.1 is gone.

85

DISADVANTAGES OF "WINDOWS 10"

(continued)

If you have been running "XP

88

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

By default, an improved "Start

Menu" is back AND the

unpopular "Start Screen" (that

was in Windows 8.1) is

missing.

89

90

91

THE RESTORED "START MENU"

(continued)

There still are two columns in the

"Start Menu":

92

133

IMPROVED "AEROSNAP" AND

"SNAP ASSIST"

(Similar to "Windows 7,

"Windows 8", and "Windows

152

ADVANTAGES OF RUNNING

"WINDOWS 10" (continued)

Longer Microsoft support relative

to older versions of "Windows":

According to

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-

us/windows/lifecycle:

153

154

ADVANTAGES OF RUNNING

"WINDOWS 10" (continued)

Several computer journalists agree

with me that the many of the

advantages for running

"Windows 10" are the features

that were either new or carried

over from "Windows 8" and

"Windows 8.1":

155

Features in

"Windows 10"

That Are Carried

"Windows 8.1"

156

FEATURES IN THE "WINDOWS 10..

THAT ARE ARE CARRIED OVER

FROM "WINDOWS 8.1"

• File History

• System Image Backup

• Storage Spaces

• Hyper-V (in the "..Pro" and

"..Enterprise" editions only)

• Windows To Go (in the

"..Enterprise" edition only)

157

FEATURES IN THE "WINDOWS 10.."

THAT ARE ARE CARRIED OVER

FROM "WINDOWS 8.1" (continued)• The enhanced version of "Hyper-V"

(in "Windows 10 Pro.." and

"..Enterprise..", is the only virtual

machine program that can create a

"virtual machine" has a virtual

"Secure Boot" module running inside

a "EFI". This is critical for testing the

most advanced distros of "Linux".
