Over the last three decades thousands of wind turbines of all sizes have been installed worldwide. At the time of installation each of the turbines were state-of-the-art and most of them are still operational today.

Good Investments but High O&M Costs The majority of wind turbines have been good investments, but as with many other technologies, components for repairs and maintenance are decreasing rapidly. The turbines are often in good mechanical shape but out of warranty from the OEM. We offer a comprehensive and cost-effective concept for retrofitting older wind turbines.

Our Retrofit Concept helps you upgrade the control and electrical systems in your wind turbine to new improved systems that are up to date with local and market requirements. With our experience and proven solutions you can safely and easily upgrade and regain maximum performance from your turbines.

For all types of Wind TurbinesAll turbines ranging from kW to the MW class can benefit from being upgraded with new technologies. No matter if they are stall, active stall, pitch, 2 or 3 bladed turbines.

Our extensive experience and know-how cover many of the turbines now ready for retrofit, as we have developed solutions for these in the past. We can therefore easily provide you with suggestions for upgrades to increase the performance of your turbines and increase your earnings. Our Retrofit Concept is ideal for most wind turbines. The Scope of Supply depends on the type of turbine and your specific needs. Typically, we provide the following equipment and services for a Retrofit Project, but we are of course always open and ready to develop and provide more, if you can benefit from it.

Engineering Our dedicated engineering team will comprehensively analyse your turbine and propose and implement the best solution.

Main Control SystemThe main control system is the “brain” of the turbine and it is often here where many of the improvements can be obtained. Mita-Teknik replaces outdated control systems with a new field- proven control system that provides extensive processing power, full access to all operational data, easy service and complete remote control over the Internet.

Turbine Application Software The control system is loaded with our application software that performs the control and supervision of the turbine. Our open platform software has been developed using our software experience working with thousands of turbines. The software is designed to ensure that a specific turbine is performing at its best under all conditions.

SCADAOne major improvement of our new system is the possibility of accessing your turbines over the Internet. Our SCADA system, Gateway provides a complete overview of your turbine so that data, performance and earnings can be easily downloaded, shared and monitored directly from your home or your work desk.

Grid Connection SystemMita-Teknik retrofit turbines using the latest grid connection technologies to ensure perfect grid compliance while protecting the generator and the mechanical parts. The outdated systems are retrofitted with new capacitor banks and our patented connection module or by using our LVRT solution that offers grid-code compliance and Low Voltage Ride Through in areas where a weak grid is present or the utility company has special demands.

Condition MonitoringEveryone who has experienced the breakdown of a gearbox or main bearing knows that replacing such parts is both time consuming and costly. By installing a Condition Monitoring System, faults and emerging faults can be spotted in time, avoiding major breakdowns. Mita-Teknik retrofits existing turbines with our WP4086 Condition Monitoring System which monitors the vibration levels of the whole drivetrain.

AccessoriesMita-Teknik retrofits turbine sensors and electrical equipment with new and up-to-date units that have been proven through use in thousands of systems. We supply a full range of sensors and equipment that cover all needs in- and outside the wind turbine.

Park Control Since older turbines were installed, the technologies outside the turbines have also evolved. Mita-Teknik can connect turbines into a network that through input from the utility company or other controller, regulates the production and quality of the park output.

Certification Often it is very easy to get a turbine recertified after a retrofit of the electrical systems but every country/state and turbine is unique in the way they work. If recertification is required, Mita-Teknik will assist you in recertifying the turbine together with the relevant certification body.

Case

Retrofitting a Danish Turbine Family

The V39-500KW, V42/V44-600 KW and the V47-660KW are a family of highly successful wind turbines manufactured by Vestas.

The turbines are upwind, 3-bladed, pitch controlled and with an active YAW system. They were installed in huge numbers during the 1990s and many of them are still in operation worldwide. Mita-Teknik has successfully retrofitted this family of turbines with new control and supervision systems: Control and Software System We replace the original Cotas control system with an up-to-date system that provides extensive processing power, full access to all operational data, easy service and complete remote control.

Special application software for this family of turbines has been developed, ensuring maximum performance for each type. Many of the turbines are equipped with Optislip - a device that controls the slip inside the generator by controlling resistance electronically. This device has proven to be very expensive as a spare part, but Mita-Teknik uses the latest control strategies to bypass this unit, when it fails, without measurable changes to the loads, power quality or output. Grid Connection SystemThe Grid Connection system will be replaced with our patented WP4060 Grid Connection module. Through monitoring and soft connection to the grid it protects the turbine and ensures that power quality meets utility company demands. In areas with strict grid codes or many grid drops, the existing grid connection system can be upgraded with our LVRT Renew, recharge and regain control of your

investment.

Condition Monitoring This family of turbines are equipped with gear boxes from various manufacturers e.g. Hansen, Jake, Winergy or Valmet These can cause stops or even breakdowns due to wear and tear over the years.

By installing our condition monitoring system, existing faults and emerging faults can be identified in time.

Together with surveillance of components like contactors and actuators, unplanned service can be dramatically reduced, increasing the availability of the turbine.

SCADA System and Data AvailabilityWith the new control system on board, all operational data from the turbine is now available to the owner of the wind turbine. The turbine can easily be accessed and monitored through our Gateway SCADA system or be integrated into another supervision system without any limitations.

Wind Turbine Retrofit - V44

On the mainland of Denmark lives wind park owner Mr. Henry Kuhr.

Mr. Kuhr is the owner of several Vestas, V44-600 kW turbines originally installed in 1996 and 1997, which have been running smoothly for many years providing green energy.

Mr. Kuhr has always been dedicated to alternative energy and besides owning the turbines, he is also chairman of the board of a biomass power plant project.

After many years of continuous operation, the turbines needed more and more service and care. The electrical system in particular was malfunctioning and became very expensive to service.

“I had a huge problem with one of my turbines underperforming and it was very difficult to get hold of spare parts and to supervise the operation. The performance went down and costs went up , so it was only natural that I looked for ways to improve performance.” Mr. Kuhr says.

Due to long experience in the market, Mr. Kuhr decided to retrofit one of his turbines with the latest Mita-Teknik WP4100 MK II control and supervision system.

The complete control system was changed including: Main Controls, Grid Connection System, Control Software, Condition Monitoring and SCADA System, Gateway.

Certified Solutions Working closely together with the certification bodies in measuring and inspecting the turbine during the project, the retrofit solution was fully certified in May 2012.

Outstanding Results After the retrofit by Mita-Teknik, the turbine is now one of best performers on site.

Mr. Kuhr now has a total overview of production, service and the state of components over the Internet.
