Measuring the wind

Anemometer goes up on the South Shore of St. Croix

Inspected by Percy Radclyffe and Carl Joseph of the Energy Office.

The towers contain a variety of measuring devices. Solar irradiation as well as wind speeds at three different heights will be measured.

This device measures the wind using sonar. One is now located on St. Croix and one on St. Thomas.

The towers are 60 meters high. ( A meter is three inches longer than a yard.) In this photo you can see two of the three measuring heights

A temporary fence was immediately installed about the towers and the support lines.

Getting the towers put together and raised was no easy task, but it was accomplished with minimal problems.

The SODAR device has a prime hill top location on St. Croix. The devices are collecting information that can be used to build wind farms.

The project was overseen by the VI Energy Office with technical assistance from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
