First - a warm welcome to our newest member, Nadine Perry, who was inducted on 24 November - please make
yourself known to her if you have not already done so!
A big thank you to everyone who supported the theatre night in such numbers. It was a splendid evening - a great
show and much enjoyment among the Rotary audience. Visitors from clubs around the District have emailed their
appreciation to me - several commenting that not only did they enjoy "Oh What a Lovely War" but also the theatre
itself - never having been there before. The icing on the cake was the £1,000 the evening raised for SSAFA to add to
the £2,700 from the WMOS retiring collections. See the article and photos inside for more details!
As Christmas approaches we have a lot lined up: the outing to Waddesdon Manor on 4 December - very many
thanks to Gloria Vessey; the TFSR celebration on 11 December - great organisation by David Farthing; and of course
the carol singing expertly led by Richard Chisnell on 11, 12 and 13 December - see website for times and full details.
Richard will also be leading carols at the December Reminiscence morning - 12 December.
December meetings will all have a festive feel – evening dinner with suitably festive entertainment on 15 December
(don't forget we're at the Winchester Hotel), the lunch on 22 December to which former members will be invited
and breakfast on 17 December. But before then, don't forget the SGM on 8 December, when we elect the remaining
officers for 2015-16.
A very happy Christmas to you all – and very best wishes for the New Year. Gill Russell

Nadine Perry New Member
My leisure time is spent largely keeping
fit; running and attending classes such
as Zumba and Body Pump. I find that
exercise helps to counterbalance the
effects of being sat at a desk during the
day. I enjoy gardening albeit- no matter
how hard I try- the garden never seems
to be up-straight. As a family we enjoy
camping.
Most of my recent charity work has
been based around my daughters’
interests. I volunteer at Brownies and
recently travelled with the pack to
Disneyland in Paris to celebrate our 50
year anniversary. I also help to run the
Sunday school at my local church. I
have completed a few short 10k runs
for charity.
I am a Chartered Financial Planner
with 21 years’ experience in
finance. I get great satisfaction from
helping my clients to visualise
where they want to be financially in
the future and working with them
over the longer term to develop an
ever-evolving lifetime plan to help
them to achieve their dreams, and
ambitions. I work for Towry, a
specialist wealth advice/
management company, and look
after the interests of a portfolio of
high net worth individuals.
I have been married to Dan for 13
years and have two lovely
daughters; Hannah and Ruth, aged
11 and 7. Dan and I have lived at
the same property in Southampton
since moving in together for 17
years and have completely
renovated it to make it into our
perfect family home.
I am proud to be a fellow of the
Chartered Insurance Institute and
have successfully been made an
Associate of the Chartered Institute
of Bankers. In my youth, I attended
Aston University and was awarded
a B.Sc. Managerial & Administrative
Studies in 1993.
John Eade (Proposer), President Gill
Russell, Nadine Perry (New Member) and
Shelagh Bird (Hon. Secretary).
Whilst at university I was
chairperson of the local British Trust
for Conservation Volunteers for a
number of years. I would love to
return to spending some time
outside at the weekends getting my
hands dirty.
My Uncle and Aunt in Swindon have
been keen Rotarians for many years
and encouraged me to explore
what Rotary has to offer. One of my
clients suggested that I attend a
Winchester Rotary meeting and I
thoroughly enjoyed the energetic
atmosphere and the broad
spectrum of the club’s membership.
Now that my children are growing
up, I am looking to widen my
outside interests and Rotary would
help me to achieve this goal along
with helping me to establish a
network of professional contacts.
I feel that Rotary can also help me
to develop my skills in particular
public speaking. I enjoy being
involved in the community and get
great satisfaction for achieving
something as part of a team. Being
a professional full-time working
mum, I am great at organising and
achieving agreed objectives.
Membership
As I have emailed to all Members
and mentioned last Monday, the
new sound equipment means that
we need to make some substantial
room in the Rotary cupboard at The
Royal Hotel. I have taken out
equipment which will be stored in
my garage room.
There is a list of absent equipment
on the inside of the cupboard door.
If you are storing any other Rotary
equipment could you let me know
so that I can add it to the list?
“That’s the way to do it…”
as Mr Punch would say.
Once the new equipment is in
permanent residence we will try to
put in an extra shelf to help with
the orderly storage of Rotary
magazines, leaflets and the various
membership material that has to be
kept in the cupboard along with the
meeting items.
If you need any of the above
equipment please contact me to
arrange to collect it from my house
and to return it to my house.

I am hugely grateful for the very
generous sponsorship of our pre-
show reception: the Royal Hotel for
the provision of wine, Miff Kayum
whose delicious canapés were
much appreciated.
Several individuals who also
contributed to the cost of drinks
and helped with the organisation –
members of both Rotary and Inner
Wheel; thank you - you know who
you are!
I've since received appreciative
emails from around the District –
and the photos on this page give a
great impression of another very
successful Winchester Rotary
event!
As we all now know, we sold all but
the back row of the circle!! £3 from
each ticket sold resulted in £1,000
for SSAFA.
I was delighted to present a cheque
to Brigadier Richard Leighton,
Chairman of SSAFA (Soldiers',
Sailors' and Airmen's Families
Association) Hampshire at our
meeting on 24 November (see

On Wednesday 12 November
Winchester Rotary hosted a District
Theatre Night at the Theatre Royal
– previously these have been held
at the Salisbury Playhouse.
It was more than a year ago when I
heard that the Winchester Musicals
and Opera Society would be staging
‘Oh What a Lovely War’ during my
Presidential year, as their
contribution to the First World War
commemorations.
I have been a member of WMOS for
several years and realised that this
was a great opportunity to combine
my interests!
Having Club and District interest
and agreement gave the green
light, and help in organising the
ticketing was generously provided
by Alan Corkill of Salisbury Rotary.

Uganda Partnership October – November John and Myra Wilkinson, together

returned from another successful visit

Kasese, western Uganda.
This was a demanding two week visit in
so many ways, but continues to seal
our joint working and collaborative
friendship. This article barely scratches
the surface of what is happening in

John was able to evaluate and support
the “Books For Schools” Global Grant
project, and visited 12 schools. The
project is developing much better
than we could have imagined.
Most of the objectives are already
being met in all of the 20 schools. All
have clean, secure, well floored,
painted, with shelving and arranged
with books to serve as a library.
Each has a librarian who is
supported by a management
committee with action plan.
Some 14,000 children and over 220
teachers are being reached by the
project; 80% of children are using
the libraries and so far a minimum
of 20% are borrowing books.
Parents too are becoming involved.
This has happened in just six months
from working from virtually nothing!
This is testimony to Rotary’s power
to make change for the better!
Myra spent a week working at
Kagando Hospital close to the
DRCongo border. Here she led
microbiology sessions and taught
laboratory safety to trainee
technicians. She also led a whole
hospital seminar on “control of
infection” which is most pertinent at
this time.

put “Service above Self”.
