There’s another chance to improve your test riding with Beth on Monday 25 July. There will also be dates in August and September to be confirmed later. Please see the website for future dates. You ride a test of your choice. Beth marks it. You then have a debrief of 15 - 20 min depending on the chosen test. She will explain how you can improve your ringcraft, riding skills and horse’s way of going to gain those extra marks. You ride the test again, Beth marks it again and hopefully your marks will improve. Warm up will be in the outdoor arena and the test riding will be indoors. Beth is the working rider/yard manager for international Grand Prix rider Anna Ross-Davis at Altogether Equestrian. Having been based at Altogether since September 2011 Beth has now ridden up to Prix St George on home produced horses. She has wide experience of producing lots of different horses from just backed through to the top level of dressage as well as schooling eventers, ex-racehorses and ponies. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and has a very enthusiastic approach to training both horse and rider with excellent communication skills. You will be getting those higher marks in no time at all!!

Congratulations ~ Congratulations ~ Congratulations

WRC members continue to do well at our competitions. It’s always good to be able to hand out rosettes to WRC members! It was just great to see that ALL the rosettes in the Summer Show Riding Club Horse class went to WRC members. At the Open Spring Eventers Challenge on 7 May at Sparsholt EC rosettes were awarded to: Jean Briden, Lucy Broadbridge, Jenny Cox, Nadia Doughty, Karen Duggleby, Claudia Herbert, Nicola Hudson, Molly Martin, Lynn Mead, Tamsin Raymond, Joanna Russell, Susan Snook, Penny Towers, Kerry Tyrrell and Carys Williams. Huge congratulations go to the 5 successful WRC over 40s In my favourite class, No Spring Chickens. Perhaps we should rename this The Fine Wines! It’s easy for the youngsters, as they have their parents’ back up. It takes real courage and determination to compete when you’re more mature.

At the Open Summer Show on 4 June at Sparsholt congratulations go to Jane Carter, Kez Cordwell, Jenny Cox, Amanda Derrick, Jo Dockeray, Leah DouglasJ, Frances Elms, Kate Harris, Claudia HerbertJ, Alice JenkinsJ, Annie Jenkins, Eleanor JenkinsJ, Vicky Long, Elizabeth Peerless, Felicity Pooley, Tamsin Raymond, Joanna Russell, Catherine Sheldrake, Jemima SnookJ, Susan Snook, Lucy TalbotJ, Lisa Taylor, Camilla Terrell, Penny Webster, Cameron WigmoreJ, Sarah Wigmore, Sophie WigmoreJ, and Lise Wood.

It’s always great to hear about members’ successes, so if you’ve done well or know of another member who has, please don’t be modest. Let me know, so it can appear in the next magazine. And a special well done to all who competed but weren’t placed. And a VERY special thank you to all our helpers.

AGM at SUTTON SCOTNEY HALL on TUESDAY 22 NOVEMBER

Everyone is welcome and it’s FREE, so please put the date in your diary. Our AGM is a great opportunity for us all to get together, go over the last year’s activities and events and hear your suggestions for the future. At the same time and enjoy a glass of something with light refreshments – and it’s all free!

PRIVATE TRAINING WITH NADINE GREGORY Nadine has offered flexible training for WRC members. This will be on a one-to-one basis at her yard at Park Farm, Avington, or she is happy to travel to your yard. The cost is £35 (to include arena hire) for a 45 min session. You can choose to have a test ride session which would consist of you warming up, riding a test of your choice, debriefing with Nadine and more training, then riding the test again. If you prefer, you can choose to have a regular lesson. Nadine is riding at PSG with her home produced horse and has been a judge for several years. She has an encouraging approach and has wealth of experience teaching all levels from intro to advanced. Please contact Nadine directly for a day and time that suits you on 07887 800315.

ROYAL ARTILLERY HUNT NEWCOMERS’ WEEKEND - 1 and 2 OCTOBER 2016 For newcomers/old hands/those who want an action packed hunting themed weekend!

The RA Hunt (the only remaining military foxhound pack) extends a warm welcome to all at its annual Hunting Clinic on Salisbury Plain. This established event is especially designed as a taster for those new to hunting (either horse or rider) but is equally challenging for ‘old hands’!

Participants are invited to join the Friday evening pub supper beforehand with early morning autumn hunting to follow the next day. The weekend gives an overview of how hounds work, hunt staff roles, horn calls, history and etiquette together with talks and practical demonstrations plus a visit to the RA Hunt Kennels. A full programme includes riding cross country over the Larkhill British Eventing course with the encouragement and guidance of experienced instructors.

Course Fee: £270 - All enquiries to Pippa Grob MFH, [email protected] or 07780 547696

Open Summer Show on 4 June Held in the arenas at Sparsholt College again this year, our Open Summer Show proved a popular event with competitors coming from far and wide. It was good to see that of the 78 riders who made up the 151 entries nearly half were WRC members. There were 29 showing classes in total, ridden and in hand, and in 19 of these classes WRC members took first place. Very well deserved! The number of entries in the children’s classes was disappointing, but this was perhaps down to half term holidays and Pony Club events. The judges remarked on the high quality of horses presented to them and the calm and friendly atmosphere within the show generally and there were lots of positive comments on Facebook and by email. It’s always good to receive such feedback and constructive criticism is welcome at all our events. This was the first year that we tried out a new entries system using a programme called My Riding Life. This is a fully automated system whereby competitors make their own entries on line and these are collated into classes without the show secretary having to do this onerous task. This method of entries is used by numerous show centres now (including Sparsholt), and, although the first time a rider uses the system there is a fair bit of information regarding horse and rider to enter, subsequent entries are made quickly and easily as all the information is stored. It was encouraging to note that of our 78 riders 47 used this new system. I cannot start to tell you how much easier this made my life as show secretary! Very many thanks to all the riders who came to the show. I know what a lot of time and effort you have to put in just to get there. I hope you enjoyed yourselves. A big, big thank you to all the judges and helpers without whom the day couldn’t run.

Barbara Scriven

And a HUGE THANK YOU to Barbara and Becky for organising it all! Editor
