Welcome to the Winchester Criterium!

Today is a celebration of cycling and I hope that youhave all had a great day out. Winchester City Councilare leading by example and have invested wisely in a sport that has ahuge following in the area. Winchester is very lucky to be surroundedby wonderful countryside, only minutes away from the city, which nodoubt helps for the sport to thrive in Hampshire. We have seen howcycling is a dominating Olympic sport for the British, with a couple ofthe British team coming from the local area. Rob Hayles and Dani Kinghave had (and are having) highly successful careers in cycling. With theincrease in membership in the local cycling club, VC Venta, I hope thatone day events like these can produce more Gold medal talent.

This event is all about capturing the imaginations of young people, andto help propel them forward to progress in the sport.

City Centre Criteriums don’t come cheap and we have to thankWinchester City Council and Winchester BID for stepping up soquickly to help us fund it. We also need to thank our sponsorsHoliday Inn Winchester, Hendy Ford Winchester, Shentons Solicitors,The Country House Company, Judes Ice Cream, Vankru Cycles andBritish Cycling for being so generous with their support.

I hope you have a fantastic evening watching the racing and I hope tosee you participating next year!

The Winchester Criterium Sunday 11 August 20138

In 1852, a small bicyclerepair shop opened inWhitchurch with the

name Hendy above the door. If anyonehad thought to ask, surely no-onewould have guessed that 150 yearslater it would still be going strong.

The beginnings may have beenhumble, but today the Hendy Groupemploys 650 people, selling cars andcommercial vehicles across more than20 locations as the largest dealershipgroup in the Southwest and the oldestFord dealer in Britain. And it’s still afamily-run affair – the currentChairman and Deputy Chairman aregreat-grandsons of the companyfounder F.A. Hendy, and more Hendysare spread throughout the ranks.

Naturally, the business has diversifiedfrom selling Penny Farthings to well-to-do Victorians. The Hendy Group nowholds Ford, Mazda, Kia, Honda, FordCommercial and Iveco franchisesstretching from Devon to West Sussex. These dealerships are full of friendly, knowledgeable staff immersed in theHendy way of doing things: putting thecustomer first and making sure – as perthe Hendy byline – it’s all about you.

You’ll find that kind of attitudepermeates the whole business. Everydepartment (and there are a lot) isfirmly focussed on attention to detailand making sure the customer alwayscomes away smiling. 150 years’practice does a lot for a companyphilosophy, and with Hendy Heartbeat, the in-house customer survey

programme, the company learns howto improve itself with constant change.

With so many departments, the HendyGroup has a huge wealth ofknowledge and expertise to draw on.Whether you’re looking for expertservicing, affordable parts, aftersalessupport or accident repair for your car,the Group can take care of you.Businesses are catered for as well, withvehicle hire, commercial vehicle sales(Ford and Iveco) and fleetmanagement offers as well. One localman even went to Hendy Power tosource an engine for his road-legaltank. When Hendy Group claim ‘allmakes and models serviced’ they’revery serious, and you can find usedcars from practically everymanufacturer at the award-winningHendy Used Car Supermarket in Exeter.

Speaking of awards, the group as awhole was bestowed with theWhatCar? Trusted Dealer Award, anaccolade granted by the famousmagazine only to dealers wherecustomers are sure to get the very bestservice at a fair price. It’s a mark offaith in the Hendy name, and a claimthat there are no nasty surprises andno hidden catches, but only service ofthe highest calibre.

But enough about the Hendy Group –after all, the only way to knowwhether they’re the best is to see anddrive the cars, talk to the staff and trythem for yourself.

Anthony McCrossan grew up in Winchester, attending MontgomerySchool and Peter Symonds College and was a member of VC Venta asa young cyclist. The previous Winchester Criteriums were promotedby his father Hugh, and during one event, he stepped in as racecommentator. Little did he know that after a few hours sitting on topof a double-glazing van in Winchester he would end up forging anew career. Anthony is now a cycling commentator for ITV4,Eurosport, Sky and many other channels worldwide and was thecommentator at the key cycling venues for road-racing, time trialsand track at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

A quote from Anthony McCrossan:

“The Winchester City Centre criteriums set me on my career path as acommentator at some of the largest cycling events in the worldincluding the London 2012 Olympics. It was at one of the earliestwinchester events that I picked up a microphone and described cyclerace action to a crowd for the first time. I wish everyone involved asuccessful event and am sure it will help inspire more young riders toemulate champions like Dani King and Rob Hayles”.

Rob Hayles:

“For me, the city centre crits like Winchester were all part of not onlymy enjoyment of bike racing, but also a massive part of my learningcurve that made me and so many others, the bike riders we ultimatelybecame. To have Winchester back on the calendar excites me andmakes me wish I was a teenager again!”

Rolling Back the Years

Many of you are probably wondering what ishappening today and where the idea of a closedcircuit race came from. Many of you might bethinking that this is a new and innovative way toshowcase cycle racing in the UK, and may have seenThe Tour series on ITV4. This isn’t a new event by anymeans and has been done before back in the 1980’s.

Winchester has great history with cycling and actually grew one of the UK’s mostnatural cycling talents at the turn of the century. It was a man by the name ofFrederick Frost (Dickie). Dickie would race one hundred mile races and won theBath Road Club 100 mile race three times, twice in succession! He also won theCawardine Cup and Kops Cup and also broke the 100 mile record by 10 minutes in1897 By the end of his career he had amassed trophies and medals worth £2000!

Winchester still continues to create history with the local cycling club, VC Venta. VCVenta has been going since late 1970 and has previously organised local Criteriums inthe city. They took place in 1988-1990 and then again in 1997 & 1998. They havehelped the likes of Rob Hayles, Mark Beal-Toms, Mark Armstrong, Wayne Coombesand Geoff Giddings (marketing manager, Raleigh) and local boy Anthony McCrossan(British Cycling commentator) start their careers.

Cycling is experiencing a ‘boom’ movement at the moment and we are riding onthe crest of the wave. VC Venta’s membership has risen again since last August andthey now have coaching available to juniors from 6-16 years of age. Although theseevents are great to watch, they do take a lot of time, effort and money to put on.VC Venta would love to participate and spectate in this event in future years, butwe need the support from the local community, council and sponsors to do so. Wehope that this event captures your imagination and it helps to create a few morelocal British Champions out of our club.

If you need any information on VC Venta then please head towww.vcventa.co.uk or e-mail Chris Hutchings or Crispin Quail [email protected].
