Message from the school It has been a successful week at school. It has been wonderful in welcoming back half of Year 10 over the
last five days. We have had 100% attendance to all sessions with Year 10 demonstrating how much they
had missed school by working exceptionally hard in their six lessons each day. Across the course of next
week we will welcome back the other half across the next five days.
We anxiously await news from the government over their guidance for how schools can open safely to
more students in September. We are keen to get students back at school and will work hard to react
quickly to government guidance.
Positions of Responsibility
Last week I had the pleasure of being a part of the final interviews for Head Girl and Head Boy. The
quality of applications were outstanding. Each candidate was tasked with delivering a presentation on
what our ASPIRE values mean to them, followed by an interview with myself and Mr Young. All students
were a huge credit to themselves and the decisions were very difficult. The results of all the positions of
responsibility are on our front page. I want to congratulate all the successful students and look forward
to them leading our student body with integrity and pride.
Building Update
Another excellent piece of news we received this week was the decision to grant planning permission for
the building expansion scheme. We are excited to have finally been given the green light to improve the
facilities to the current and future students at Winchcombe School as we grow from a roll of 498 to a
maximum roll of 600 over the next few years. The building scheme will provide much needed and
improved facilities:
A full size Sports Hall
An additional Science Lab and a refurbished Science lab
A covered quad area for casual dining
Extended dining hall to allow for seated dining
Refurbished Design and Technology and Food rooms
Extended SEND facilities
A dedicated assembly hall
Improved and secure reception area and meeting room
With a phased programme being delivered over the next year there will be some minimal disruption to
the school but it will deliver some outstanding facilities. Our School Business Manager, Ms Franklin and
Site Manager, Mr Hagger will now work closely with the contractor E.G. Carter to allow works to begin.
At present they hope to begin in late July 2020.
Year 11
We are keen to hear from you if you would like to use the Winchcombe Weekly to send a message to
other students, staff or simply to let us know your plans.
Well done to all students who continue to work so hard on the Distance Learning tasks, it is great to hear
the feedback and see the work that you are producing, and a huge thanks to your families who are
continuing to support you during this really difficult time.
Mr Templeton

A message from the Head Boy, Henry After not sitting in a classroom for 3 months now, I have had a lot of time to reflect on my time at
Winchcombe School. Firstly, the size of the school, Winchcombe is very small in comparison to others
near us like Cleeve, this gives students a comfortable environment to learn in while hopefully knowing
most people in your classes as well in your year. Secondly, I think that teachers don’t get paid enough for
what they must deal with sometimes (sorry) and the work they do in order to let us excel.
I don’t feel that bad for leaving early, especially as I didn’t have to do my GCSEs however I do miss the
social aspect of school. But it is good that I don’t have the pressure of my exams and not having to revise
every day.
My advice for other years is to just listen to your teacher, they have a lot more experience than you and
they know what you must do to get to your targets (even if this does mean doing 2+ hours of poetry
annotating), so don’t complain about work, all of it is done to help you get better at the subject.
Henry
Keeping Safe Online You may have seen on the news recently that there has been a rise in cases of online exploitation and
cyber-crime since lockdown.
There are lots of resources to help families and children keep themselves safe during a period where we
are all using computers more. A great source for parents is advice from the National Cyber Security
Centre (https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberaware/home) and also parent guides from the NSPCC (https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety)
If you have any worries or concerns please contact a member of staff
who can help you find support.

Drama
Year 7 are doing some work on Monologues at the moment.
Why does hay fever have to be a thing? It’s only making life worse for me, just making me
go ach-choo! Loads of times repeatedly ach-choo! Ach-choo! Ach-CHOO! Why can’t it be
gone? It’s also a problem even when I’m sleeping, I do that same thing again, my nose is
tickly, and I want to sneeze again. How are we supposed to fix it? We can’t get rid of
flowers and I can’t get rid of my nose, but it’s getting so annoying and getting in my way all
the time. Why does hay fever even have to be a thing?!
Charlie’s Monologue, about something he dislikes.

Ms Teague’s Tips
This week is British Flowers Week.
Living in Gloucestershire, we are spoilt by the wild flowers that grow locally on Cleeve Hill and further afield. Even
in more urban areas, where you least expect it, nature can thrive. Some of the better known local flowers to
Gloucestershire are: Pasque flowers (vibrant purple flowers that flower late April/early May), fragrant orchid, bee
orchid, juniper, cowslip, carline thistle, autumn gentian and majoram. There are so many more.
This week, you could go for a walk (a great form of exercise, which has enormous health benefits, as well as
reducing stress and anxiety levels). How many flowers can you spot in fields, under trees, in the verges, in parks
etc.? Could you sketch some of the flowers you see? Can you capture the flowers by photography? Consider
writing the diary of a wild flower - how did the seed find itself there and how did it grow, considering the
extremely dry spring we have had, along with the recent storms?
Enjoy nature.

Mr Watson’s Album of the Week Graham Coxon is the guitarist in Blur and if you like Blur you will love The album of this
week as it is the 2004 release “Happiness in Magazines” by “Graham Coxon”. This album
only reached number 19 in the album charts but it is so much better than that. My
favourite two tracks are “Freakin’ Out” and “Bittersweet Bundle of Misery”, the two
songs are completely different in style one is really rocking and the other is lovely slow
mellow number that just glides with love and feeling. The album has a bit of everything
and is well worth a listen.
If you like this try this is “His N Hers” by “Pulp” released in 1994. This is the album before Pulp broke out and is
their finest album. Two of the songs are absolutely fantastic in “Babies” and “Do you remember the first time”.

Distance Learning and Student Wellbeing: Students, Parents/Carers
Term 6: 1st June – 17th July 2020
Students, Parents and Carers,
As we move towards Term 6 (June-July) we are continuing to consult and improve how best to teach all students
from ‘distance’ whilst always keeping the welfare of students, staff and parents/carers at the forefront.
Since Week 5 of ‘lock-down’ (April 20th) we have evolved how Distance Learning ‘looks’: for example, we have been
setting “sessions” of work every fortnight, dependent on subject/year group;
tracking the students who complete, or don’t complete, work;
reducing the “sessions” to be around 30 minutes of ‘Learning’ for each task;
‘Welfare Contact’ phone calls/emails to check on students’ well-being/work/other
As we have always discussed, there is no ‘one’ correct way this can work. We have increasingly listened to comments
and ideas from staff, parents and students – the recent Tutor/Head of House emails/phone calls were invaluable in
gauging how the work is being managed at home.
We are receiving more and more feedback from parents who are worried about their children - the most frequent
concerns expressed are:
1. Not feeling connected to the school - work set on G4S lacks the teacher interaction that many students are
craving
2. Not being able to see familiar faces of staff and students
3. Too many different subjects on G4S
4. Tasks not suitable for work at home, resources not available or clearly explained
5. Tasks set in too large blocks - students over-whelmed giving up before starting
6. Resources needed for tasks not available when working on devices e.g. cannot fill in worksheets etc.
7. Submitted work not being acknowledged
From Monday 1st June, we move into the next ‘phase’ of Distance Learning and Student Wellbeing
(pages 2-3)
![Page 12: Winchcombe Weekly · WS – Term 6 Curriculum – Weekly Overview: w/b 22nd June 2020 Work will be set in Go4Schools each Monday morning – to be completed by the following Friday](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052008/601cce7467db6a44207711a4/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
A. Distance Learning 1. Setting Work
Subject work (‘sessions’) will be set on Go4S weekly: every Monday morning, with a deadline of Friday morning (by
mid-day).
From 1st June, Y9 Option Groups will be created in Go4S so that Y9s can be assigned ‘Core’ (English, Maths, Science)
and their 4 Option Subjects’ work.
Also, from 1st June, for the Y7/Y8 Technology Carousel, the classes will rotate for the final Term: Go4Schools will
show the TWO subjects for each student, for this final rotation.
We want to provide parents, via Winchcombe Weekly (WW), with an overview for the learning for the upcoming
week in each year group. This will help parents plan and students understand what is coming next. Mr Clarkson will
publish, every Friday, the overview for the next week. For example: Friday 22nd May, the Topics being covered for
w/b 1st June. This is to help provide some advanced information, if you want to prepare.
All work, for Term 6, will be ‘review and revision’ of previous learning this year: what are the key skills/knowledge
students have learnt and need to embed? We need to avoid teaching ‘new’ work because:
Teachers need to ensure all students would understand all ‘new’ work – which is difficult from ‘distance’;
Our lessons should focus on developing fluency within already familiar concepts – ensure students
understand what has been taught from September 2019 until March 2020.
2. Optional Extension Task
Following the ‘core’ tasks for each session, teachers will offer an ‘extension’ task which is optional for those who
choose it. This does not necessarily need to be submitted and may have less structure e.g. research, reading or a
video. It is to give students the opportunity to do more if they wish.
B. Student Wellbeing 1. Teaching group contact
For those students who have not completed the weekly task(s), by mid-day Friday, Subject Teachers will email the
student to remind them of the work, ask why it is not completed and to offer support –Teachers will copy in the
parent/carer to this email.
2. Tutor group contact [Form Tutors, Heads of House]
Each Form Tutor will make a weekly contact with their tutor group, as a group. For example, send an email to the
group checking-in with them, maybe discussing a topic for the week.
3. Group Student Contact
Teaching Staff are increasingly looking at our ‘visual contact opportunities’. For example:
Pre-recorded or Zoom assemblies on a topic - Head of House assemblies are already planned
Pre-recorded or Zoom Masterclasses on tricky topics or concepts
Pre-recorded or Zoom tutor time
Zoom intervention for specific groups
