LADIES 1s HALF TERM ROUNDUP We go into the mid-season break sitting in 7th place in the Investec Women’s Conference East having had a mixed set of results winning 4, drawing 2 and losing 5. We had a lot of changes at the start of the season saying goodbye to some great Wimbledon players but have been excited to welcome so many new faces to the team and Club; Rose Thomas, Abi Krone, Liv Martineau, Rachel Evans, Sophie Bowker, Lizzie Jones and Lizzie Rae. Following some great preseason training, including a tour to Holland, we hit the ground running with a 2-0 win over Ipswich, a side we have struggled against in past seasons. The next three weeks had us finding our feet together resulting in narrow defeats to Harleston, Sevenoaks and Maidenhead. Since then we have really gelled as a squad and produced some of our best hockey, especially against St Albans, East Grinstead and our second game v Harleston. We look forward to starting the second half of the season in February and in the meantime will be building on our successes at Indoor. This year we also welcome Dutch international Karlijn Van Der Linden to Wimbledon. Unfortunately having sustained an injury karlijn has been unable to play this half of the season but has been getting involved in coaching across the club. Alongside with Steven Ebbers (Men’s 1st team), Karlijn will be running a Dutch Indoor Hockey Masterclass for ages 8-16 years on the 3rd and 4th January; it’s sure to be a great weekend and more details can be found in the Juniors section of the newsletter.

Did you know? The move to our present Clubhouse location at Church

Road took place in November 1889 when the club secured a 21 year lease on pasture land. There was an option to buy this piece of land for £3,612. The new District line opened to Wimbledon in June 1889. In 1899, the Club

bought the freehold – a very shrewd move!!!!

INSIDE WIMBLEDON – A view from the Mens 2s

The London Premier League, some say, (mainly ourselves), the hardest 2nd team league in Europe!

Well, we currently sit 3rd, and this afternoon we reached the half way stage. So, if Ladbrokes were on song and we continued our healthy run of form, we should sit 4 points from 2nd.

We all remember Man City's implosion a few years ago (football FYI), so who knows... If Hampstead and Westminster lose a couple, and The Mighty Wombles can pick up a scalp here or there then we could be in with a real chance, of winning, or either knocking on the door of a league title. Of course, this being the hardest 2nd team league in Europe, two defeats and we are back in 7th. Drama? I know!

But who says we can't pull off Mission Improbable? We have already beaten Southgate, East Grinstead and Surbiton away from home. A first time ever that such a treble has been achieved. You're allowed to dream, right?

Under the stewardship of a new coach, Lee 'Frank the Tank' Pettifer we have developed into a team feared. And with the likes of Tom 'Bench Press' Lambourne and Daniel 'From New Zealand' McLachlan we just might turn a few heads come season end.

If you get a chance and fancy watching some real hockey, not like this talented and athletic bunch today, then come on down. We play at KCS at 1:30 every other Saturday! I'll buy you a beer, or a vino, or a fruit shoot! We encourage all supporters!

MASTERS HOCKEY/SOUTH MASTERS TRIALS

Wimbledon have been playing Masters Hockey [previously better known as Veteran Hockey] for the past 40 years in one form or another. Over the years there have been several tours to places as far afield as Australia and Malaysia as well as within Europe. And in 1986 we hosted an International Tournament [we came second] prior to the Willesden World Cup. At Club level Masters Hockey is now commonplace and Wimbledon have always been in the forefront in promoting Masters Hockey. But in the last 10 years things have begun to be taken more seriously at the top level following formal recognition by FIH. There are now 13 different age categories of Masters Hockey, 8 for men and 6 for 'Lady Masters' [ nb. not Mistresses!], ranging from Over 40 to Over 75 in five year bands, all playing for official World Cups and Continental Cups. Earlier this year in Holland some 120 Masters teams from all five continents were represented at what was the largest international hockey tournament ever held. This was the second Masters World Cup, and England were well represented and came back with several gold medals. In August 2015 England will be hosting the European Masters Tournament at the same time as their younger brethren will be competing at Lee Valley, already approximately 100 European teams have entered, and in 2016 World Cups will be held in Australia. The England teams are selected through trials, which are open to all players who wish to put their names forward, but in fact nominations will normally come from the Regional Associations. The South hold trials for their Masters teams in all 13 categories and the selected teams then play in Regional Tournaments at various venues all round the country. These tournaments are attended by the National Selectors for the respective age groups Anyone interested in playing for the South, or for that matter England, should contact the respective South Team Managers: All women's ages [O 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60] Sara Walker [email protected] Men O 40 Stuart Hall [email protected], O 45 Andrew Spooner [email protected], O 50 Chris Cookman [email protected], O55 James Felix [email protected], O 60 Tochi Panesar [email protected], O 65 Geoff Lucas [email protected], O 70 David Read [email protected]. But anyone wanting advice beforehand can contact Ben Rea, [email protected] or 01372 728666.    In addition they are also looking for UMPIRES to help on the day. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please contact the co-ordinator, Geoff Lucas, email; [email protected] The trials will take place on Sunday 1st March 2015 at Tilsley Park, Abingdon - as shown on their advert on the next page.

Please send in your reports so that they can be included on the website and in the newsletter. Please send your reports to [email protected] Wimbledon GU16 PREMIER vs Surbiton GU16 PREMIER: 1 - 4 On Sunday 16th November, GU16 PREMs travelled for a League match to our local "rivals" Surbiton. Would we follow our Men's 1s footsteps who beat Surbiton on their home ground a day earlier? A Herculean task with our slim line squad of 11. As in recent matches, we were a little overwhelmed in the opening 10 minute, struggling to get the ball out of our half. 2-0 down we realised Surbiton was no magic and we started pushing back connecting well between Emily, Katy, Paula and Yasmin in defence and Eva, Bella and Lynn in the mid-field. As play progressed and especially in the 2nd half, we started to connect with our strikers Charly, Mia and Becky resulting in some serious opportunities including a goal by Becky, her 1st of what no doubt will be many. Well done to Anna, our sub, playing her first u16 match. Special mention to Eva, Emily and Katy for excellent play. Man of Match award goes to Phoebe, our goalie who performed some heroic saves. To quote Tarek on Sunday "we have no reason to be in awe of our opponents". As we showed today playing as team, our passing massively improved, using our technical skills and putting our training routines into practice we can face any team in the region. Well done to all for giving it 60 minutes of your very best. Next, Spencer for the Cup in February. Before then perhaps another friendly against Surbiton and the Indoors season. Meanwhile, please do try to make Thursday night Academy. It is at these sessions that we can practice team play, short corners and passing routines etc.

We are also very privileged to have Men's 1s players as assistant coaches to Tarek. Wimbledon Mens 3s vs Old Loughts 2s - The Ides of Movember Following some undesirable results in the previous few weeks the team were uncharacteristically prompt to ‘Far Pitch KCS’, resulting in a meagre 3 players contributing to Tayls’ growing pint fine fund. Something he seemed destined to add to with a tangible desire to watch the 1s game in Surbiton. The tempo was upbeat and fast from the start, whether it was the coffee or the promise of curry and Cobra will remain a mystery. True to form an early, scrappy goal was conceded. However, after addressing our ‘1-0 down, capitulation’ myth in the huddle, it wasn’t long till we’d levelled up with a neat move down the left baseline converted delicately by Bush. Far Pitch KCS was being a difficult mistress to nail down defensively and the oppo, despite some heroic saves from our leader and captain, scored some memorable half-volleys. Lean-Broad-Fava-Heinz-Green-Kidney Bean scored a textbook deflection off Josh’s drag flick. And Josh went on to hit the base of the post from a later shorty. As the game drew to an end and a chilly fog rolled in from the North-East corner of the pitch it was fair to say we didn’t produce our best hockey of the match. However for those of us not present on Saturday it was worth noting that the team performance was much improved from the week following. We left Far Pitch KCS and headed to the club for some sociable touch-cup with a departing message stressing the importance of ball retention. No, we don’t mean when checking your testicles for lumps, more on that later. Back at the club, Tayls casually knocked back 3-4 pints and didn’t whine about it at all. We drank some beer and received a lift in Finn’s van which definitely isn’t used to lure women of the night back to. Arriving at the curry house and after a friendly, self-esteem building game of fines we drank some more beer. The more youthful members of the club attended the Fez club to spread their seed. For yours truly the night became decidedly burly from that point on, resulting in falling asleep on the 93 bus and awaking in North Cheam. REGARDLESS, Thanks to Tayls for organising a cracking social. Sorry to bash on but on a more serious note, most of you may have seen the horror adorning my upper lip this month. Having suffered abuse from patients and colleagues alike we’ve entered the latter half of Movember. I’ve attempted to spread the importance of

Anything you’d like to justify your abuse with would be most appreciated. http://mobro.co/jamesbuxton Wimbledon GU10s – November The girls U10 have had a busy month with matches in November. Our Falcons, Hawks, Eagles and Kestrels braved the downpour on Sunday 23rd to play the Teddington Bears, Puma's, Panthers and Lions and Barnes at our home pitch. All the girls played very well in the torrential rain and the parental support in the appalling conditions was absolutely fantastic to see. We saw some great stick work, skill and speed on the pitch from all the girls playing. A huge thank you to our coaches and umpires on the day - Tarek Abdullah, Johnny Kinder and Loic Cerulus for managing the girls and for our umpires who went above and beyond the call of duty umpiring for over two hours in the pouring rain - Cassie Hughes, Yasmin Edmonds and Izzie MacParland. A huge thanks from all the U10 girls for all your hard work and help. The Sparrows and Robins played away at Camberley on the 23rd also playing in appalling conditions. The girls played very well indeed showing some nice skill and applying what they had learned in training to their matches. A huge thank you to all the parents for coming to support the girls in the rain with special thanks to the parent volunteers Ollie Beckett, Nancy Le Roux, Terry Jones and Emma Burnett for making sure the girls teams were organised and for managing them on the day. Spencer Scorpions vs Wimbledon GU16

Stripes: 0 - 5 On Sunday 30th Nov, Wimbledon GU16 Stripes travelled to Roehampton for our Spencer match. After a loss and draw, would we win our 3rd League match? We started the match a little messy, controlling the mid-field but not causing much danger in the Spencer D. Until at about 15 minutes a perfectly injected short corner by Rosie K was converted by Anna P with a hard hit into 1-0. With our confidence up, we began to reach our strikers Lydia R, Annabel B and Rosy K resulting in some super chances. Effective passing and good team work resulted in 2-0 by Anna and 3-0 by Annabel B. What a difference two halves can make. Spencer raised their game in the 2nd Half but following the good instructions by our coach Merie King, we didn't let them have it. Our backs Annabel F and Ciara W took out the Spencer wingers, whilst in the centre, Spencer strikers were challenged by the fast and skilful Julia E and Emily W. We scored another two goals, an acrobatic pirouette by Frankie B into 4-0, followed by a goal by Rosie K well set-up by Charlotte S. We thank Claudia who (un)fortunately didn't see much action. In summary, a fun game in the sun with super result thanks to fast running, skilful passing and great team work. Well done GU16 Stripes! Next Stripes match will be on 14th Dec against Old Kingstonians (at Home). Before then, some us will also have - what promises to be a tough - Stars Match against unbeaten Surbiton Eagles (next Sun 7th Dec).
