Emma

Clarence

Backyard Litter

The owner of this litter could not care less about them and had just not gotten around to dumping them at the shelter when rescue found them. They were im-mediately taken to the vets and treated

for a skin condition and given shots and wormed. They have had a very hard start to life and now deserve wonderful homes from here on out. All these

pups are wonderful with excellent dispositions and will make wonderful pets.

Emma was a rescue from down south who was adopted from us about 2 months ago. One of the children she lived

with has allergies and so the family returned her to us. Emma is a sweet, beautiful and gentle pup. Now that she

has grown a bit she appears to have some Great Dane in her and will likely be on the bigger side. Emma is also

good with other dogs and cats. She is about 4 months old and up to date on her shots. This pup is going to be a real

gem if you like slightly bigger dogs.

This little guy was found as a stray and brought to the vets office before going to the shelter. The vet thought he was

such a good boy he called rescue to see if we could help him out. Clarence is now neutered, up to date on shots and ready

for his forever home.

Saratoga - Warren - Washington Counties

Here we are with Memorial Day weekend upon us once again and there have been precious few days to pull weed and catch up on all the planting we want to do. It seems that every time I can line up some free time with dry weather, I have to spend that time mowing the lawn. Assuming that it doesn’t rain, it looks like Memorial Day weekend will be the time to scramble to plant. Amusingly, this is really the time I’d be putting most of my “tropical” vegetables in anyway. .

Hopefully by the time you’re reading this, I’ll have fi nally gotten my tomatoes planted and I’ll be just about ready to get my peppers in. Peppers are more sensitive to soil temperature than all the other vegetable we plant. Peppers won’t perform well until SOIL temperatures are 65 degrees or higher. If the season is cool, I’ll enclose them in what I call a “pepperdome’. This is just a cute name for four stakes that I’ll wrap with horticultural fabric right to the ground covering my little pepper transplants. This fabric will trap heat and hold heat around the peppers on cool nights. Once summer weather arrives in earnest, I’ll remove the “pepperdome” and let the peppers bathe in direct sunlight. I also like to cover the soil beneath my peppers with black plastic to generate even more heat. If the summer gets really hot, I can cover the black plastic with straw to keep the soil temperature under control. In September, when temperatures start dropping, I’ll brush the straw back to let the sun warm up the plastic and soil again. There’s a little saying I use to remind myself not to plant my peppers too early: PLANTING PEPPERS PREMATURELY POSTPONES THE PERIOD OF PRIME PRODUCTION but PROVIDING PEPPERS WITH PROTECTION PERPETU-ATES PROFUSE, PROLONGED PRODUCTION.

Now I’m going to give you my annual rant about a strange gardening habits that I just can’t understand. It drives me crazy when I see someone who’s spent a lot of time (and probably money too) creating a beautiful fl owerbed or vegetable garden watering it with a lawn sprinkler or hand-held sprayer. It’s all I can do sometimes to keep from pulling off the road and giving them a “tune up”. I know that this is a habit borne of ignorance but it really isn’t at all good for the plants. Somehow the idea of spraying your plants with water seems “refreshing” and has a lot of appeal to people. Also, we’ve all seen those ads on TV that show the nice folks at some “mega warehouse chain” misting the fl owers. While it creates a lovely visual effect for the TV viewer, it is one of the worst possible things you can do to your plants. Why?

Remember that plants absorb moisture and nutrients with their ROOTS to replace moisture lost by the leaves through evaporation. When you wet the leaves, the plant isn’t able to grow until the leaves dry off. But this isn’t the worst of it! When you wet the leaves (especially in warm weather), you’re creating the perfect environment for fungal diseases to incubate and grow. Can anyone say “powdery mildew”?

In the vegetable garden, problems with plants that produce fl owers but never set fruit can almost always be traced to “spray-watering”. Spraying the plants with water washes the pollen out of the fl owers. Without this pollen, the bees can’t pollinate the fl owers. No pollen, no fruit or vegetables.

There are no good reasons to “spray-water” unless you’re shooting a commercial for one of those ignorant “mega warehouse chains” and there are many good reasons not to (cold water shocks the plants washes away pollen and promotes fungal diseases). As far as I’m concerned, the only acceptable way to water is to get the water into the soil while wetting the leaves and fl owers as little as possible. Soaker hoses can do this in permanent beds but I usually use my trusty watering wand. You’ve all seen these at the garden center and you probably think it’s just a handy device for watering hanging baskets that are too high to reach. In reality, the purpose of these wands is to help you direct water down into the soil among your plants without having to bend over with the hose. My watering wand is always attached to the end of my hose. Remember: lawn sprinklers have NO business anywhere in a fl ower or vegetable garden. Your hand held spray gun has no purpose in the yard at all unless you’re washing your car….end of rant and thanks for the read.

Midge

Maverick is great company! He loves to socialize and when not busy checking out every nook and cranny he can’t resist stalking, chasing, batting and carrying

around every toy in reach. In addition to being playful Maverick loves a good scratch which he usually asks

for with a silent meow and a thankful loud purr. A true charmer with his gentle and easy-going nature

Maverick will fit into almost any household. If Maverick had his preference he’d love

to be adopted with his little sister Midge who always provides him with a soft spot to sleep.

Maverick is comfortable around dogs and cats.He and Midge are spayed & neutered, up to date on all his shots and tested negative for both FIV and

Feline Leukemia.

Midge is a shy girl but once she decides your an ok human its all purrs, leg rubs and head-butts. Midge prefers to keep all four paws on the ground but enjoys

lap-time as long as its her idea. When she is not seeking out affection with a soft meow Midge is usually off on her own playing with toys — anything round and fuzzy

will do. Can’t find the cat toys? — Midge probably has them tucked away in her bed for safe keeping! If Midge got her wish she’d be adopted with her big brother

Maverick who looks out for her and always lets her have his leftovers. Midge is spayed and up to date on her shots, she gets along with both cats and dogs.

SURVEY: JOB SEEKERS CARE MORE ABOUT PAYCHECK

THAN HEALTH CARE (NewsUSA) - The recent government shutdown inconve-nienced many Americans -- from federal workers, to tourists -- but how did it impact those looking for work? The health care debate was among the main catalysts for the shutdown, with both parties claiming to be the voice of the public, but has the voice of the job seeker been drowned out as a result?

A new national poll asked those very questions to fi nd out what was more important to job seekers -- a paycheck or health insurance. The result? The majority of unemployed Americans (77 percent) would apparently take the job, even if it meant no health insurance.

Online career network Beyond.com surveyed over 5,000 job seekers from across the country to fi nd out how the gov-ernment shutdown and the technical frustrations with the health care rollout impacted their employment search. The survey comprised a dozen questions to determine if health-

care was really the main con-cern for those seeking work, and most respondents, it ap-pears, were just interested in a salary to support their fam-ily.

* 61 percent of those who participated in the survey said that their top priority when it comes to a job is sal-ary, not health care.

* That's despite approxi-mately 32 percent of respon-dents saying they currently don't have health insurance, with nearly 50 percent of

those people citing they haven't had health insur-ance for more than a year.

* 89 percent of respondents said they'd do just about anything to fi nd a job, in-cluding working long hours and/or weekends.

"With so much specula-tion about the job market, we decided to go out and ask job seekers exactly what they were thinking," said Joe Weinlick, VP of Marketing at Beyond.com. "A big part of fi nding a job is confi dence, and while health care is certainly an important is-sue, we've found that those looking for work are more concerned about things like honing interview skills or up-dating their resume. Health insurance is one of many fac-tors people need to weigh when considering a job of-fer, but you have to get the job off er fi rst."

Survey respondents in-cluded job seekers from the Millennial, Gen X and Baby Boomer generations. Surprisingly, the majority of respondents from each gen-eration reported that they'd consider job off ers even if they didn't include health insurance at all -- despite nu-merous reports citing the in-creased need for health care across the board, especially with Baby Boomers.

What do you think people will be most thankful for -- a paycheck or health care?

THE DANGER OF SMOKING WHILE DRIVINGUsing a cell phone, texting and drinking alcoholic beverages are all activities that can lead to fi nes or arrest if done while in a moving vehicle. But in some areas, it is already illegal or may soon be, to smoke in a vehicle if in the presence of children.

Since 2006, several communities across North America have implemented laws to prevent smoking in cars when children are present, and campaigns for smoke-free car laws are poised to continue.

The public has become increasingly aware that there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, includes the smoke that a smoker exhales and the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products. Thousands of toxic chemicals are present in secondhand smoke, including formaldehyde, lead, butane, cyanide, and carbon monoxide. These dangerous chemicals can be inhaled and tend to linger in the air for hours or longer. Smoke residue also clings to a smoker's body and hair and can even surface inside of a home or vehicle, according to The Mayo Clinic.

Asthma, heart disease and cancer may result from contact with secondhand smoke. When someone smokes within the small enclosed space of a car, passengers are exposed to air that is many times more toxic than what the EPA considers hazardous air quality, even if a window is down. What's more, the particulates of tobacco smoke that are absorbed in the upholstery off -gas back into the air even after many days have passed, exposing riders to toxins well beyond when someone smoked in the car.

The developing bodies of children and their small stature put youngsters at risk for greater complications from cigarette smoke, although any passenger is at risk.

Laws vary depending on location and typically apply to children ages 16 and under. Smokers are urged to quit smoking for their health and the health of others. But those who continue to smoke should refrain from smoking when inside a vehicle, especially when children are present.

DID YOU KNOW?The automotive industry has long been a male-dominated industry. Things could begin to shift after the actions taken by one major automaker. In late 2013, Mary Barra was named the chief executive offi cer for General Motors. Barra, who has worked for GM in various capacities for the past 33 years, becomes the fi rst woman ever to lead a major automaker. Barra began working at GM in the Pontiac Motor Division when she was 18 as a means to pay for college tuition. Most recently she was the executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain for GM. According to GM, Barra was picked for her wealth of knowledge and managerial skills, not for political correctness.
