Listen to the Poem and Read Along

Paul Revere's Ride

by

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1861

Listen my children and you shall hear

Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,

On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;

Hardly a man is now alive

Who remembers that famous day and year

He said to his friend, "If the British march

By land or sea from the town to-night,

Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch

Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--

One if by land, and two if by sea;

And I on the opposite shore will be,

Ready to ride and spread the alarm

Through every Middlesex village and farm,

For the country folk to be up and to arm.

Paul Revere was a silversmith in Boston and a devoted

patriot. He was a participant in the Boston Tea Party and

the creator of an illustration of what became known as

the Boston Massacre. Revere's ride took place on the

night of April 18, 1775.

Painting by N.C. Wyeth, 1922

The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first

military engagements of the American Revolutionary

War. They were fought on April 19, 1775, in Middlesex

County, Province of Massachusetts Bay. Paul Revere

successfully warned the Americans, the British Army was

coming. These battles became known as the Shot Heard

around the World. The Americans had stood up to the

British Empire.

The Battle of Bunker Hill

was fought on June 17,

1775, during the Siege of

Boston in the early stages of

the American Revolutionary

War. American Soldiers

who were running low on

gunpowder and ammunition

were famously ordered,

“Don’t fire until you see the

whites of their eyes”.

Painting by Howard Pyle, 1897

In 1775, far away from the fighting in

Massachusetts, representatives from all 13

colonies met at the Continental Congress

in Philadelphia. An American Army was

founded. George Washington was

appointed its Commander and Chief.

The Nation Makers by Howard Pyle, 1903

The American Revolution has captured the

imagination of American Artists for generations. The

Brandywine School of Art was a style of illustration that

attempted to accurately depict historical events, as well as

works of literature. This artistic style was founded by

American painter Howard Pyle. Pyle taught many students

including N.C. Wyeth. A favorite subject of both Pyle and

Wyeth was the American Revolution.
