During this journey of Lent, some of us have been reading Emily Heath’s new book,
Courageous Faith – How to Rise and Resist in a Time of Fear. In the prologue of her book, she
recalls the story of Nachshon. As the story goes, when the people of Israel fled from their
slavery in Egypt, they soon found themselves caught between the Red Sea in front of them and
the armies of Egypt in close pursuit behind them. The story most of us know says that Moses
raised his arms, and the waters parted, allowing the people to go safely through on dry land.
It’s a great story.
As Emily recounts in her book, Midrashic tradition tells a little bit different story: Confronted
with an unknown sea, no one dared take the first step; then, Nachshon dared to stick a foot in
the water, and it parted just a little. With the next step, the water parted just a little more. So,
step by step, the water receded for the people. That’s a better story!
Having told that story in a sermon one day, Emily was informed by a rabbi, who happened to be
in worship, that the version of the story they knew said that Nachshon put his foot in the water,
and then, step by step waded further out. It was not until the water was past his waist, over his
shoulders, and had started to cover his mouth and nose that the waters began to part. That’s
the best story!
Are any of these stories “true”? That is really an insignificant question; there is,
however, great truth in these stories.
I’m guessing most of us have faced some sort of challenge in our lives; most of us know
what it is like to feel caught between that “rock and a hard place” [read Red Sea and Egyptian
army here]. Most of us know what it is like to be stuck – unable to see a way forward.
Sometimes, when we are in that situation, we might experience a full-blown miracle like in the
first version of the story – the waters part all at once and we clearly see the way forward.
More often, I think, we begin to find our way forward by taking one small step at a time and
finding just enough courage and direction to take the next step.
Sometimes, we begin to go forward, but we feel like there is no progress, still no direction, no
certainty. We may find ourselves on the brink of drowning, on the brink of giving up, when
suddenly, the water parts a little and we begin to see the way forward.
The good news in all of these stories, is that God is present, and God can and will show
us the way forward – the way to new life. Soon, we will gather to celebrate once again the
miracle of resurrection and the promise of new life we find in the empty tomb.
But before we get there, the way will look grim; the story will look hopeless; it will look as
though death won.
But we know better! We know the end of the story! And the end of the story, is a new
beginning!
Peace,
Pastor Judy
