Principal and Board Chair’s Report
What impresses me about our children? So easy; our children strive with every opportunity to meet our Willowbank Way vision of Discover, Develop, Nurture. This year, after much consultation we completed the review of our Willowbank Way. The ‘new’ statements provide the learner with a set of well defined learning intentions and the ‘where to next?’ They highlight the learning and behavioural attributes needed by the 21st student as they progress through schooling towards employment opportunities that demand high level thinking skills and the ability to problem solve.
Patterns, our Inquiry focus this year took us on a fantastic learning journey. Children learnt about patterns in and of the animal world, patterns in our environment, patterns in society and cultural significant patterns. This was highlighted during our major fundraiser, the Patterns Knowledge-a-thon. Children used technologies to investigate, design, create and modify an array of Patterns. The outcomes were astounding. Plus we raised over $21,000 for our hall rebuild. Our Cardboard Box challenge also provided children with further opportunity to be creative with technologies. On com-pletion the children invited their peers to play or view their inventions. Nurturing relationships goes beyond the classroom and the school boundaries. This year our chil-dren continued their community support with fundraisers for Middlemore hospital, the SPCA, the Cancer Society, The Auckland Zoo elephants and people affected by war and the refugee crisis. As part of our celebration of learning we all (and I mean ALL 800 children, 60 staff and 100 parents) went on a learning journey to the Auckland Zoo. This was a wonderful finale to a great inquiry. Thank you to all our helpers on the day. And a particular thank you to Mrs Neish for her organisa-tion.
We also celebrated success in a number of interschool competitions in 2015. With our rugby, Ma-thex, chess and Year 3 girls gymnastic teams doing particularly well. Sienna Wall, our Year 6 speech winner, came 3rd in the local HPPA speech competition.
In May we celebrated our very successful ERO visit. The ERO team identified Willowbank as a top performing school. Their key findings state: Willowbank School promotes student learn-ing very effectively. Students benefit from a broad, relevant and well delivered curriculum. Students are highly engaged in the learning process and are supported well to be successful and independent learners. A spirit of leadership is nurtured in students. Being in the top % of schools means that ERO is likely to carry out the next review in four-to-five years. This is high praise for the success of our learning programmes, our wonderful, hardworking children, teachers, SLT and BoT. Next year our Learning Journey focus is ‘Responsefulness’which we will explore across the curricu-lum, with a specific focus on the Arts and Science curriculums. Which we shall showcase in grand style at the end of year. We look forward to you all being part of our new learning journey and cele-bration. To those of you leaving us this year, my thanks for your contribution to Willowbank School. I wish you well for the future. For those returning, we as a staff look forward to working alongside you in our quest to continue to discover, develop and nurture the potential of every learner at Willowbank School.

I like playing dress-ups in Kiwi. There is a Batman, a Spiderman and a Buzz Lightyear suit as well as lots of princess dresses. Navya On Fridays, we can choose different activities and games to play. We can also play at lunchtime when it is raining. I like to play dress-ups. I like to dress as superman and fly around. –Serhan
On Pyjama Day we got to wear our pyjamas
to school for Jammies in June. I looked
awesome in my racing car jumper and spider
pyjamas. I loved playing on the playground in
my pyjamas, because wearing pyjamas on the
slide made me go much faster. I like
Jammies in June Day because I was a gorilla
and I like to eat bananas, also I liked seeing
everyone’s different onesies. - K2 children.
I like playing out the back of Kiwi with the sand and making sand castles. –Amy. It’s so fun to water the fruit trees, if we keep watering them they will grow and we will have yummy fruit to eat. –Tavleen.

In the nature trail we saw a bug hotel with a ball that the bugs can play on. We felt the wind on our face and the sea shells under our feet. We heard the birds tweeting and the leaves rustling. By Ruby, Aimee, Bronson and Vibhi.
In K5 we read The Very Hungry
Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We used paint
to make handprints on paper, then we
used our hands to make the face and put
on the eyes and mouth. We think they
look beautiful and we had lots of fun
making our caterpillars and learning
about Eric Carle. –K5 children.

We have done lots of music in Room 13. One of
the things we did was create art by listening to
music and drawing what we heard. First we
listened to Aquarium from Carnival of the
Animals by Saint-Saens, whilst we listened we
drew what we heard on a whiteboard then we
painted it on paper. – Nina.
We are really lucky in K6 because we have two
teachers not just one. We also have a shop and
a barbeque as well as lots of play food to help us
with our learning. Our favourite thing about
school is learning to write like the big kids. –K6

Room 9 has been learning
about Maori and Pasifika
patterns. Firstly we discussed
where you will find these
patterns in the ‘real world’. We
then looked at the work of
two artists to see what Maori
and Pasifika patterns they
use. Lastly we learnt how to
draw and shade these
patterns on our own. We have been practicing to become
great word detectives in our reading; by
searching the room for words we know reading them and then writing
them down.
This year we made sunglasses. We made them on our own. We
made them with a cardboard frame and the bendy bit out of straws. We are going to invite people to make ……..
their own. ….
This year we had fun at pyjama day. At pyjama day we did some Jump Jam. We had a photo
of us wearing pyjamas. We also brought some
food for a shared lunch. I loved pyjama
day.

This year Miss Giles took us to the
Senior playground. It was really hard for me to climb on the
spider web but I had so much fun!
This year we planted a strawberry plant. We wrote a procedure about how to plant a strawberry plant. It was really fun. I love strawberries.
Books, books, glorious
books! We love
reading and being read
to from the picture
books in our colourful
classroom library.
What a great time we have had
learning in Room 16 this year!! Great
friendships have been made!

Team 2
Room 10 created these amazing masks using patterns.
Room 14 read the story ‘The Kuia and the Spider’ and learned about Maori weaving. We then created our own weaving masterpieces!
Room 12 learned about how bees make honey.
Left: Diagram by Helena Newton.Above: Explanation by Nikki De La Cruz.
Left: Room 30 have been learning about fractions.
Right: Artwork by Ethan Yang, Room 12.
Below: Team 2 have been making bird feeders as part of our inquiry. Here are some of Room 30’s wonderful examples.
How do bees make honey?First the worker bees collect sweet sugary nectar from the flowers. When their honey stomach is full the bees go back to their hive and put the nectar into the honeycombs. Then the bees evaporate the water by flapping its wings. It turns the nectar into honey. Next when the honeycomb is full the bees put wax over the top to store it. Now you know how bees make honey.
This is my bird feeder. First I got a box. Next I got a bottle and another box and glued it on the top. Then I got some straws to make a cross.

Knowledge-‐athon During the Knowledge-‐a-‐thon I had the best time ever because Ms Alderson came to our lovely class and she asked a question. If we got it right we could have 100 Awhina points for each Awhina. I felt awesome when we got it because she thought it was cool and great. We got to bring our Knowledge-‐a-‐thon activity that we had made, with help with from our parents. We showed them to the big Assembly. We also got a stamp book that had a kiwi on it. I felt important to myself. By Grace Eng
Venus
Venus is the 2nd planet from the sun and
has no moons. It is known as Earth’s twin
sister because they are the same size.
Venus is made up of rock and it has no
oceans, just lots of thunder and lightn
ing.
Earth is a good ho
me for humans. On the
other hand, Venus is not because
it has
yellow clouds that are filled with dang
erous
deadly acid. I would be terrified to l
ive on
Venus.

The Fly House I landed on a place far away from home. It was very strange. I could taste the splendid taste of juicy, sticky honey and the cheerful taste of apple. I could hear the buzzing sounds of my friends and noisy cars brushing past me. I could smell the sizzling smell of hotdogs cooking in the sun and the endless smell of yummy scrummy food. I could feel the ground beneath me rumbling under my tiny hairy legs and the spiky grass tickling me as I fly. I can see fluttering butterflies soaring past and the loud humans talking. There is so much to discover, I am going to ask my friends if I could come and live here. It is so much fun! By Jasmine Xu
Fun Week On the last day of term 2 we had pajama day so we all wore our PJs.
By Shanaiya Lata When the speaker said to dance, we had a great time outside dancing. The fun bit was playing sideline soccer in our pjs!
By Anna Ye
Maths Week Every year Willowbank has something that is called Maths Week. We do fun maths for a whole week. We play awesome Maths games. This year we did a maths poster and my poster said ‘Maths Rules the world’ and it had numbers on it.

Stefania’s Slippers They only had 30 minutes to pack. Stefania kept picking up things but her mum said “No. Only the one thing that is most precious to you.” She chose her dancing slippers. When the 30 minutes was up they got shoved onto cattle wagons in the freezing cold. Stefania recognised some of her friends but they were too scared to talk. At last they reached Siberia. it had taken 6 weeks.

Stefania’s Slippers
The soldiers yelled, “You have 30
minutes to get what
you need!”
Stefania was rushing around eve
rywhere to get what
she wanted. Her mum soon came in and said,
“You can only take 1 thing.” Then
her mum went away
to pack food and silver spoons.
It was a very hard choice for Ste

her dancing slippers.

Cross Country
My sports gear was flapping in the air as I stepped
up on to the
field. As I got nearer to the starting point I got a
bit cold, but I
knew I would warm up when I ran. I stepped up and got ready
to run. Mrs Bowden was on the clappers. She pulled them
out
and counted down from 3. 3,2,1, clap. I started
sprinting down
the field. I could feel the splashes of mud coming up on my
leg. I was coming close to the concrete. Bang, bang, bang, I
could hear all of the shoes hitting the concrete.
Zoom, I raced
past Miss Ross and into the car park. I could smell the fumes of
cars as I leapt on to the footpath.

ANZAC
I am furious by the red, hot, fresh blood that is pouring out of the soldiers. The dangerous guns are shooting with amazing point of speed hitting the poor soldiers. The soldiers are thudding and crashing to the sandy, red, bloody ground. I am gloomy and miserable when I see my friend calling for help when he got hit. I am running like lightning to save him but it was too late.
I dearly miss my home. I feel like I have been hit by a bus. I am not sleeping well just thinking of my beautiful husband. He is the best man I have ever known. I wish I was safe and in my bed. But instead I am in a frosty, dirty, wormy trench. I want to go to my home I want a normal life but it’s not going to happen. I feel like a rock trapped in danger I need to help our country I can’t let them down. With Love Zara Kumar
Room 25 has been presenting science experiments. We have had lots of fun learning about them and trying out new experiments every day! The class learnt how to write up scientific experiments using words such as hypothesis, method, results, conclusion and reaction. We also had fun explaining how our science experiments worked.
It was the time of our lives! Most of the experiments went FIZZ! BOOM! WHOOSH! BAM! And lots more!
We also had a science week just for our inquiry. Each person had to bring in an experiment to present to the class. The science in our class was amazing. By Hannah and Wiltberg
