This work is a seascape instead of a landscape. A captain of a ship was throwing overboard sick and dying slaves in order to get money for them being lost at sea. Turners frenzied emotional depiction of this act matches it barbaric nature. The slave ship sails off into the distance, leaving behind a sea full of bodies of slaves sinking to their death. As evidence to buy this painting, Turner believed that emotive power was deeply rooted in color.

The Fighting TemeraireThis painting is depicting the ship Temeraire which is shown traveling east, away from the sunset. Turner’s main concern was not historical accuracy but rather depicting loss. The painting shows his mastery of painting techniques to suggest sea and sky. The painting is supposed to represent the decline of Britain’s naval power.

In this painting, Hannibal is depicted crossing the Alps to fight the Romans. The figure of Hannibal, who is leading his armies to attack Italy, had powerful associations with Napoleon. This piece shows the man's vulnerability in the face of nature. The attention on the dying soldiers, who were the victims of conflict.
