Scouting the TribeWilliam and Mary is playing its sixth home game in the last seven contests today, after falling to VCU in the conference opener on Sunday. Taysha Pye and Taylor Hilton each scored 13 to lead the Tribe, with Katherine DeHenzel and Kaitlyn Mathieu also reaching double-digits in scoring. Pye is only 16 points away from 1,000 for her career, and Hilton has scored in double-figures each of the past four games. Mathieu is the CAA’s top freshman so far this season, leading all rookies in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and field-goal percentage.

Scouting the DukesJames Madison won its conference opener Sunday, 84-61 over Northeast-ern, to improve to 8-5 on the year. Dawn Evans is the NCAA leader in scoring with 25.6 ppg, and ranks second in the nation with just under four three-pointers made per game. Lauren Jimenez is pulling down 8.3 rebounds per game and scoring 12.4 ppg.

At her rate of 16.8 ppg in 2010-11, she could pass the 1,000 point plateau tonight against James Madison. That would be the third-fastest in school history, behind only the 55 games of Lynn Norenberg ‘81 and 65 of Kyra Kaylor ‘07. Pye would also be just the 14th player ever at W&M to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

W&M finished with a positive ATO for the first time in 2010-11, dishing out 17 assists to just 15 turnovers ... It was the seventh time this season that the Tribe has had fewer turnovers than its opponent.

Tough RoadThe CAA’s scheduling formula for women’s basketball gives each team five permanent partners, home-and-home series against two other schools, and splits two home games and two road games among the four remaining opponents. In 2010-11, W&M will have home-and-home series with the teams picked 1-8 (the Tribe is seventh).

Mathieu Named Rookie of the WeekKaitlyn Mathieu’s outstanding weekend in Cancun netted her CAA Rookie of the Week honors on Nov. 29, the first award of her young career. The fresh-man post-player scored 19 in both games in Mexico while shooting 60% from the floor (9-12 against Bradley and 9-18 against Buffalo). She also averaged 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game for the tournament.

No Place Like HomeW&M’s five-game road swing to start the year was the longest in school history to begin a season. Dating back to Marh’s CAA Tournament, the Tribe played the last six games away from Williamsburg, which was the 17th time in school his-tory that six games or more have been on the road or at a neutral court. The longest such streak was 12 games during the 1974-75 season.

It was the first home game to reach 50 minutes since a triple-overtime feature against VCU in 1998-99 ... The Tribe hit its first 12 free throws in the game ... When Katherine DeHenzel canned her fifth triple of the day in the first over-time, the Tribe was 10-16 from beyond the arc ... W&M finished 10-21, which tied for seventh all-time both for most triples made (10) and the best three-point percentage (47.6) ... Notes from CancunKaitlyn Mathieu averaged 19.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and 2.5 bpg en route to earning all-tournament honors at the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic ... She was the only freshman named to the team ... In the first half against Buffalo, Mathieu scored 11 straight points and 13 of 15 for the Tribe ... Against Bradley, four Tribe players reached double-figures, including Taysha Pye (14), Katherine DeHenzel (12) and Jaclyn McKenna (10) ... Pye’s eight points against Buf-falo snapped a streak of seven-straight games in double-digits.

Bouncing BackTaysha Pye has exhibited an amazing scoring resiliency in her career, coming back immediately after poor performances to make the next opponent pay. Since her breakout game on Feb. 5, 2009, against James Madison, Pye has been held under 10 points just six times. In the next game, she’s averaging 20.5 ppg.

Prep: A three-time all-state honoree, including first-team honors each of the past two years … Also earned a pair of first-team all-state accolades from the Iowa Newspaper Association … Led Martensdale-St. Marys to the state tour-nament each of the past two years … Named 2009-10 Basketball Player of the Year by the Indianola Record Herald and Tribune … The Des Moines Register selected her to its Elite All-State team … Has already collected 1,147 points, 753 rebounds, and 291 blocks so far in her career.

Reunion with Dr. MartinWisconsin’s Chancellor gave a short pre-game talk to the Tribe on Sunday, which might seem unusual unless you know that Dr. Carolyn “Biddy” Martin was a member of the Tribe’s basketball team in 1972-73. She averaged 8.9 ppg as the Tribe went 5-7 and scored in double-digits in six games, including a high of 17 in the season-opener against VCU and 12 against Virginia Tech in the state tournament. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College in 1973, Martin went on to receive her master’s from Middlebury and a Ph.D. in German Literature from Wisconsin in 1985. She was the provost at Cornell from 2000-08, and took the post of Chancellor at Wisconsin in September of 2008.
