Countdown to 1,000Through 72 games in her career, Taysha Pye has 984 career points, an average of 13.7 points per game. At her rate of 16.8 ppg in 2010-11, she could pass the 1,000 point plateau tonight against James Madison. That would be the third-fastest in school history, behind only the 55 games of Lynn Norenberg ‘81 and 65 of Kyra Kaylor ‘07. Pye would also be just the 14th player ever at W&M to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

Favored OpponentTaysha Pye has met James Madison four times in her career already, and is av-eraging an astonishing 26.8 ppg against the Dukes. Her scoring seems to peak at home - in two games in Williamsburg, Pye has provided career-highs of 30 and 33 points against James Madison.

Beginner’s SkillFreshman Kaitlyn Mathieu has contin-ued the Tribe’s tradition of strong rookie contributions in 2010-11, earning two CAA Rookie of the Week awards in the first two months of the season. As of Jan. 5, Mathieu leads all freshman in the CAA in scoring (11.8 ppg), rebounding (6.9 rpg), blocks (1.3 bpg), and shooting percentage (46.3%), and also ranks sec-

onds in steals with 1.8 thefts per game.

Notes from VCUThe Tribe had four players reach double-digit scoring against VCU, the fifth time this year at least four have scored 10+ ... W&M finished with a positive ATO for the first time in 2010-11, dishing out 17 assists to just 15 turnovers ... It was the seventh time this season that the Tribe has had fewer turnovers than its opponent.

Tough RoadThe CAA’s scheduling formula for women’s basketball gives each team five permanent partners, home-and-home series against two other schools, and splits two home games and two road games among the four remaining opponents. In 2010-11, W&M will have home-and-home series with the teams picked 1-8 (the Tribe is seventh).

Notes from LongwoodA furious rally late was unable to lift W&M over Longwood on the road in its last game, a 77-82 setback ... Taysha Pye scored a game-high 27, her third game of 20+ this season ... Katherine DeHenzel shot 62.5% from the floor, 60% from beyond the arc, and 100% from the

Mathieu Named Rookie of the WeekKaitlyn Mathieu’s outstanding weekend in Cancun netted her CAA Rookie of the Week honors on Nov. 29, the first award of her young career. The fresh-man post-player scored 19 in both games in Mexico while shooting 60% from the floor (9-12 against Bradley and 9-18 against Buffalo). She also averaged 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game for the tournament.

No Place Like HomeW&M’s five-game road swing to start the year was the longest in school history to begin a season. Dating back to Marh’s CAA Tournament, the Tribe played the last six games away from Williamsburg, which was the 17th time in school his-tory that six games or more have been on the road or at a neutral court. The longest such streak was 12 games during the 1974-75 season.

line while scoring 19 ... Taylor Hilton had 12 points, her third-straight game of 10+ points ... Both Pye and DeHenzel had four assists, with the latter adding five steals.

Notes from RichmondThe Tribe fell 69-59 against Richmond on Dec. 20, the best performance by a CAA team against the Spiders this season ... Emily Correal recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds ... W&M’s 54 rebounds is tied for 16th-best ever in school history.

Mathieu Named Rookie of the Week, AgainKaitlyn Mathieu was named Rookie of the Week for the second time this season on Dec. 20, after averaging 15.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, and 3.0 bpg against Virginia Tech and Norfolk State.

Notes from Virginia TechThe double-overtime loss to Virginia Tech on December 18th was the first game to go to two overtimes since 2001-02, when the Tribe fell at Delaware ...

It was the first home game to reach 50 minutes since a triple-overtime feature against VCU in 1998-99 ... The Tribe hit its first 12 free throws in the game ... When Katherine DeHenzel canned her fifth triple of the day in the first over-time, the Tribe was 10-16 from beyond the arc ... W&M finished 10-21, which tied for seventh all-time both for most triples made (10) and the best three-point percentage (47.6) ... Both teams combined to shoot 17-34 from beyond the arc, tying for the best-ever shooting performance in Kaplan Arena ... The 172 combined points were the second-most ever for a W&M home game, behind only the 178 scored by W&M and Hampton (96-82) on March 3, 1981 ... A total of 10 players scored more than 10 points, five for each team.

Notes from Norfolk StateW&M’s win over Norfolk State was the ninth in a row over the Spartans ... The Tribe hasn’t lost at home to NSU since 1985 ... Both Taysha Pye and Kaitlyn Mathieu earned double-doubles, with Emily Correal nearly adding a third ... Correal’s 18 points were a career-high ... Pye scored 28 points, a season-high and the 16th 20+ point outing of her career.

Notes from Seton HallThe Tribe’s game against Seton Hall on Dec. 5 was the first overtime contest for W&M since Feb. 22, 2009 (at UNC Wilmington), and the first home game in overtime since Feb. 22, 2007 (against Georgia State) ... Four players reached double-digits, led by 21 from Taysha Pye ... Janine Aldridge’s 16 three-point at-tempts tied the W&M school record, and broke the Kaplan Arena record for triple attempts in a game (previously 14, set by W&M’s Jen Sobota in 2003 and GMU’s Laura Kooij in 2004) ... The game also saw a pair of arena records from SHU’s Kandice Green, who had 23 rebounds (previous 22 by Richmond’s Kate Flavin in 2002) and tied the record of 18 free throw attempts (set three times before, by Taysha Pye in 2009 and Tiffany Wil-liamson in 1989 and 1992).

This Date in W&M History . . .January 6

William and Mary is 4-5 all-time on January 6th, winning on this date in back-to-back years in 2005 and 2006. After beating UNCW 55-48 at home in 2005, the Tribe welcomed Georgia State to the CAA with a 75-61 victory in Atlanta in 2006.

Why Top-16?Many schools publicize top-10, or top-20 lists for outstanding athletic achieve-ments. At W&M, we publicize the Top 16, emblematic of the College being founded in 1693.

eight games at home ... The gym at that time was in Jefferson Hall, which is currently an upperclassman dormitory ... The longest home winning streak in school history spanned more than four years, a 19-0-1 stretch over 1,491 days between Feb. 14, 1925 and March 16, 1929.

Notes from CancunKaitlyn Mathieu averaged 19.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and 2.5 bpg en route to earning all-tournament honors at the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic ... She was the only freshman named to the team ... In the first half against Buffalo, Mathieu scored 11 straight points and 13 of 15 for the Tribe ... Against Bradley, four Tribe players reached double-figures, including Taysha Pye (14), Katherine DeHenzel (12) and Jaclyn McKenna (10) ... Reunion with Dr. MartinWisconsin’s Chancellor gave a short pre-game talk to the Tribe on Sunday, which might seem unusual unless you know that Dr. Carolyn “Biddy” Martin was a member of the Tribe’s basketball team in 1972-73. She averaged 8.9 ppg as the Tribe went 5-7 and scored in double-digits in six games, including a high of 17 in the season-opener against VCU and 12 against Virginia Tech in the state tournament. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College in 1973, Martin went on to receive her master’s from Middlebury and a Ph.D. in German Literature from Wisconsin in 1985. She was the provost at Cornell from 2000-08, and took the post of Chancellor at Wisconsin in September of 2008.
