The History of Will County

Will County is located in northeastern Illinois, southof Cook County. Its 845 square miles make it theeleventh largest county in the state. The county seat isat Joliet, which is located approximately 40 miles south-west of Chicago on the Des Plaines River.

The area which is now Will County was a favoritehunting ground for the Indians. It had an abundantsupply of water and timber, and travel was facilitatedby the old Sauk Trail and by the Des Plaines, DuPage,and Kankakee rivers. Indian burial mounds indicatethat people lived here 3,000 to 4,000 years ago and thatseveral distinct racial types of Indians inhabited thearea over the centuries.

Will County was created in 1836 by an act of theIllinois legislature, which subdivided it from CookCounty. The name honored Dr. Conrad Will, a memberof the first Constitutional Convention and a member ofthe Illinois Legislature until his death in 1835. In March,1836, three commissioners, a sheriff, a coroner, and arecorder were elected. The commission appointed otherofficers and divided the county into 10 election districtsand 17 road districts. The county lost a small area whenKankakee County was organized in 1852, but since thenits boundaries have been unchanged.

How big is Will County?

Will County is 845 square miles. Will County isbounded on the north by DuPage and Cook Counties:on the east by Cook County and the State of Indiana;on the south by Kankakee County, and on the westby Grundy and Kendal Counties.

The official 2000 Census was 502,266. The largestnumerical gains in population will occur in Cook andWill Counties, according to NIPC forecasts.

What is the population projected to be?

According to the Northeastern Illinois PlanningCommission, these are the county populationprojections for the year 2020:

REGISTRATION AND ELECTION INFORMATIONWHO MUST REGISTER – Citizens who have notregistered must do so to qualify to vote in all elections.Two proofs of identification are necessary – one withname, and one with name and address.

Voters who are already registered in Will County neednot register again unless they have changed their namesthrough marriage or otherwise.

Voters who have moved within Will County sinceregistering should notify the County Clerk’s Office byfilling out the reverse side of their voter identification cardand mailing it to the County Clerk’s Office.

All changes of address must bear the signature of thevoter and be postmarked not later than 28 days precedingand election.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER?A Person Must Be: • A Citizen of the United States • 18 years of age or over • Reside in Illinois and in the Election District 30 days • Show two proofs of identification

WHERE TO REGISTER – Registration is available at theWill County Clerk’s Office, most Township, City andVillage Halls, public libraries or with precinct registrars.For the name of the nearest registrar, call the Will CountyClerk’s Office at (815) 740-4620.

ABSENTEE BALLOTS – Any qualified voter who expectsto be out of the County on Election Day, or whose religiousbeliefs prevent personal attendance at the polls, or who isincapacitated on said day may vote by Absentee Ballot.

Ballots may be obtained from the County Clerk notmore that Forty Days no less than Five Days prior tosaid Election if made by mail, and not less than One Day ifvoting in person.

MEMBERS OF ARMED FORCES, ETC. – Members of theArmed Forces, who expect to be absent from Will Countyin the course of their duties, need not be registered to castabsentee ballots. This also applies to their spouses anddependents that are accompanying them.
