MORE NEWS FROM APS

MR. RICK CHAMBLESS

Dear APS Family,

Happy New Year! In getting back into the routine after the Christmas break, I have been continually

impressed by the thoughtful and insightful opinions expressed by my students as we study and discuss

the history of our nation and the workings of its government. Every day I am encouraged as I hear

from them a wisdom and common sense that I wish all our nation's leaders possessed.

In my beginning years of teaching, I was tempted to believe that my students' outstanding civic

opinions was somehow my doing, but at this stage in the game I understand all too clearly that their

parents' views and behaviors are far and away the greatest shapers of their political, religious, and

social views. So, parents, take heart. Your hard work and continual instruction is making a

difference. What you are saying and doing is sticking, even if at times it may feel like it is not.

Let me also encourage you, parents, to keep being intentional and diligent in the work of instilling

positive values into your children. We can all probably remember a time when much of our

culture-television, music, movies, etc.- not only supported but also inspired children to do the right

thing. As a result, our parents understandably counted on the culture's entertainment options to

reinforce much of what we were being taught at home, in church, and in school. Today we live in a

much different world. Thus, we must be a great deal more deliberate as we seek to train up our

children in the way they should go. Many of the things they see and hear in shows, movies, video

games, and social media promote values that are very different from those we want them to adopt.

So, we must remain purposeful and vigilant in monitoring what they are seeing, hearing, texting, and

posting, as they journey through the formative years of childhood and enter into early adolescence.

Finally, as we make our way into the second semester, I want to encourage parents with a pattern I

have observed over a few years of parenting two boys and a couple of decades of working with

children and youth. That is: Our kids take turns making poor choices. Yes, some make them more

frequently than others, and some stages are worse than others. But on the whole, we will all have

plenty of experiences of our children making less than great decisions. When these times come, I

would encourage us to take a breath, be

patient, and remember that these are in

actuality some of the best learning

experiences for them. There are some

lessons that only come through failure

and its negative consequences . And,

when someone else's child chooses

unwisely, I hope we are always

sympathetic. It's just their child's turn.

Our child's turn is coming.

Keep the faith, parents. Keep fighting

the good fight. Your work is the most

important work around.

Sincerely,

Mr. Chambless

Be sure you put your feet in the right place, and then, stand firm!
