Your hard work has definitely paid off with something you should be very proud of. As a guy I thoroughly enjoyed reading it even though I am probably not the target market for such a mag. I hope you have an amazing time overseas. – Chop Buchan

Sometimes, I find it very hard to focus on reality. My mind always longs for wondrous and whimsical things. Things that make butterflies appear in my chest and fill my heart with bliss. I reminiscence about pure naïve moments when I was a child, like spending hours in my backyard, laying on crisp green grass under the water drops of a sprinkler and the sizzling summer heat. I daydream about my impending days. And how I wish to live in the middle of nowhere and grow a soaring mango tree to sit beneath it for shade and swap stories with my loved ones. For now I have lately surrendered to my wanderlust by chasing freedom and change before life chases me. Taking off to spend 3 months on the American road, young, wild and free. There I lived out some dreams that triggered my insides to be bursting with inspirations. And so we have Issue No.2 – Wild & Free. I do hope that my wanderlust becomes contagious, as I hope to consume you all with wonder. With love Pauline x !

It’s a funny feeling selling all of your belongings to swap in all in for a home on the American road. Trading your 9 to 5 daily grind to be young wild and free. Ditching the domestic plane trips in-between and doing the whole darn’ thing by road. Skipping the big cities to fall madly in-love with small western towns.! We sold everything, our clothes, our car and even our dining table. It felt like a whole year worth of goodbyes, hard work and sacrifices. If it wasn’t for the American road map that occupied our

bedroom wall all those months to keep our eyes on the price, we don’t think we could have made it out alive. We were never one of those ‘bare essentials’ types. Since moving out of home all those years ago, somewhere along my road to independence and adulthood, the ratio of the things we needed to the things we wanted got a little bit out of hand. Four days after we landed in California we bought Chevy. A rustic Tioga motorhome made in 1987, runs like a dream and is as old as I am. We named him after Chevy Chase.

WILD & FREE BY KIERAN MORRISSEY & PAULINE SKEWES

Page 19: WILD & FREE

So now that your road trip of the US of A is all over red rover, tell us a moment when you truly thought ‘God Bless America!’? Kieran: Just driving through the desert did it for me. We spent all our time in the southwest states. Arizona, New Mexico, Texas. They all have these massive expansive landscapes that I’ve never seen before and it’s almost incomprehensible to see the desolation of it all. We’re a big country back home, but nothing like a massive interstate highway in the middle of it all to get you from one place to the next. Pauline: For me it was when we hit the heavily Western small towns. Like Tombstone, Alpine and Bisbee. They all reminded me of the old Spaghetti Western films I used to watch on Sunday afternoons with my dad. The accents of the cowboys were fascinating yet hard to understand. There were so much John Wayne souvenirs everywhere. Very Americana. You spent a lot of time on the road, how did you spend you’re downtime in Chevy? Kieran: Well Pauline had the laptop for blogging our trip and we didn’t have a TV so I got reading. I picked up the first book of the ‘Game of Thrones’ series from a secondhand store shop in LA. As soon as we stopped for a night I’d start reading. I finished one and started the next, and by the end of the trip I’d read 5 books. More then what I had in the last 10 years. It helped me kill the 2 weeks we spent in Malibu trying to sell our van. Pauline: I cooked in our little kitchen and nagged Kieran about what adventures we were up to next. But mostly I daydreamed and wrote stories about where we had been, where I wanted to go next. We were travelling so much from one place to the next, that whenever we spent more than a few days somewhere. I would start to

become restless and would long to be on the road again. How was it having Kieran/Pauline as your partner in crime? Kieran: We work damn well as a team. I was logistics (directions, place to stay each night) and Pauline was PR (blogging our trip, contacting friends and family back home) so it went pretty smoothly. Pauline: Kieran likes to do everything by the books. The only Bonnie & Clyde type shenanigans he forced me to partake in were stealing a bag of ice once or twice from Walmart. Mainly because he didn’t want to line up in some of the ridiculous queues that place has. Needless to say I would be lost without him. Literally. I am terrible with directions and Kieran is a walking talking GPS. He would look at a map for two seconds and say ‘O.K – let’s go!’ And I would just follow. Was there ever a point in which you got close to killing each other? Pauline: I have known Kieran all of my life and I have never known him to suffer with road rage. But I think the amount of driving we did on the American road - day in, day out has made him a changed man. One day we were driving around Santa Monica in Chevy trying to find a park for almost an hour, when all the sudden Kieran looses it – big time. No one on the road was safe from the Hulk that had unleashed within him that evening. Mainly I wanted to kill him because I thought he wanted to kill me. I think they call it ‘self defense’. Kieran: It was definitely the road rage thing right back at Pauline. We went through 60mph winds and the awning on the side of the van was coming loose and acting as a sail. We were running nearly to empty on fuel and Pauline kept telling me to calm down. It was kind of a time when I just needed to get pissed off

Page 20: WILD & FREE

at the situation but Pauline kept telling me to calm down, like it was that easy. She’s lucky she’s really cute and can get away with things like that. Describe your favored classic American meal? You know the ones; greasy, oversized, guiltily satisfying. Kieran: In Amarillo, Texas, there’s a place on old Route 66 called the Big Texan Steak Ranch. They have a free 72oz (2.04kg) steak meal but it’s only free if you can eat the whole thing, plus bread, salad, and a baked potato. Well I didn’t even attempt that so I just ordered the Big Sampler, which is kind of a mini version of the big one. When it came out it was just a giant plate of ‘brown stuff’. Good brown stuff, but all brown. Steak, ribs, sausage, and some other brown meat. I still didn’t finish it. Pauline: Corndogs. Or as we call it at home (Australia) – Pluto Pups. Hands down. I never thought I would be a fan of mustard. But thanks to American, mustard and I are now very close friends. Kieran and I accidently purchased all-you-can-eat seating at a baseball game we went to in Dallas and there was corndogs galore! Tell us about a complete stranger you met along the way? Kieran: It was pretty early on into the trip. We were still in LA and we went out in Beverly Hills to a place called the Rainbow Bar. Just a tiny place recommended by a friend to us where a lot of rockers hung out back in the days and still do. This particular night we sat next to an older gentlemen by the name of Patrick Ryan from Atlanta Georgia. He was in quite a state and when I looked over he was holding a photo postcard of Janet Jackson and proceeded to try and convince me that that was his girlfriend. He also told me about a fling he once had with

Alyssa Milano. Pauline: We sold our van to a lovely but peculiar lady named Adrianna. She caught an overnight bus from her home in Texas to become the next proud owner of Chevy. We had to spend two days with her waiting for the cheque she gave us to clear and we quickly learned that she owned 24 cats and enjoyed making beaded bracelets during her spare time. She was loud and a tad loopy, but she did offer for Kieran and I to rent Chevy off her for months at a time when we visit America again. This will be as hard as choosing your favourite child, what was your favourite place on the trip? Kieran: Definitely a small place called Canyon Lake. And at this place there was river tubing. We packed an esky full of drinks and sat back in some old tyre tubes and floated down a river in Texas for the day. Then we had a campfire that night and told ghost stories. Perfect day. Pauline: I can’t go pass Disneyland - the happiest place on earth. I ate fairy floss and listened to Disney songs all day long. Kieran and I went on every single ride including the spinning teacups. My highlight was meeting the princesses’. I also met Crueler Devil. But she was scary and a little mean. Now how about one stand-alone moment that blew your mind? Kieran: Visiting Slab City. It was our last day there and we needed to get Pauline there to see Salvation Mountain. Right around the corner is Slab City. A bunch of old RV’ers that live out there all year round. This particular day was 41 degrees and we found some locals cooling off under a tree. Blisteringly hot but they were some of the friendliest people we met on the whole trip. Pauline: There was this one-day where it felt like we drove for far too. My eyes were

Page 21: WILD & FREE
Page 22: WILD & FREE

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Page 23: WILD & FREE

growing weary and my body was drained. We had finally reached the town we were heading towards called Alpine. A small untouched Texan town when I looked to my right and realised there was half a dozen of wild horses galloping amongst a prairie. There was sunset coming down amongst the mountains in the near distance. Kieran pulled Chevy up on the side of the road and I ran to get close to the horses and take it all in. I was overwhelmed by the sense of happiness I gained from that moment in time. Sometimes whishes come true, what’s the place you wished you could spend more time in? Kieran: Definitely Austin, Texas. It was a great little city with a much younger and more liberal crowd. It had about 1000 bars and restaurants, a natural spring in the middle of the city, and we just missed South-by-South West festival and everyone said it was a must see to see the whole city turned into one big music festival. Pauline: We drove along Route 66 and stopped of at a place called Wigwam Hotel, a place where you get to sleep in teepees. We stayed there for one night and in all honestly, I could have stayed there for weeks! Being there was so magical! When you come back to America, what’s on the to-do list that you didn’t get to do this time around? Kieran: Directly opposite of where we were this time, the North Western states. A Yank told us that America doesn’t have much old stuff but if they do it’s there. Places like Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, Washington. So many world famous cities that we didn’t get to this time round but we’ll be back. Pauline: Because we were there during the wrong season, I missed out

on fruit picking either strawberries or apples within the small towns in between L.A and San Francisco. I wish we could have taken that route slower and spent more time there. But not to worry, there is always next time. Can you bestow some advice on future or fellow travellers? Kieran: Don’t get AAA. They fucked us around for 10 hours whilst we waited in the middle of the Arizonan desert with our broken down RV. But yes, definitely do it by car. Buy, rent, or steal one. America was made for cars and its just pure freedom. Pauline: Skip the plane trips and do it by road. Ditch the big cities and venture in to the small-untouched towns. People fly into America to play amongst the big cities like L.A, San Francisco and New York only, but there is so much to see in between all these big capitals. We got to do a bit of both and I must say, most of my most noteworthy moments are all thanks to the small unheard of towns. All good things must come to an end, but what’s next? Kieran: Well it’s on to the UK. Living abroad for a year or two and just seeing what happens. We’re young. But I do have a massive yearning to get home so I can marry the love of my life in front of everyone friends and family. Pauline: Next is London. I cannot wait to find a little terrace and make it feel like a home with Kieran. I look forward to having Europe only a stone throw away from home, ideal for weekend trips. Having new goals, new adventures and most of all, the chance to live out new dreams.

BY MURRAY & MEG DICKINSON

Page 41: WILD & FREE
Page 42: WILD & FREE

Tell us how the both of you met? Murray: I met Meg at High School when I was 16. She looked so pure and beautiful (even in a pair of school tracksuit pants). My heart pounded when I met her, I just knew she was the girl of my dreams. I fell in love with her at first sight, but I knew I had no chance, as she was way out of my league. I sent her a rose for Valentines Day. This was the most anxious day of my life, the day felt like it was in slow motion especially around 1pm, as the rose was to be delivered then. I was freaking out. That night Meg phoned me to acknowledge the rose I had sent and it felt so good to have told her how I felt. Soon after this Meg and I were together and we just hit it off. Meg: We have a ‘high school sweetheart’ history. I was 16 when I met Murray, my sister introduced us because she was dating Murray’s best friend at the time. We got to know each other when he would drive his best friend to see my sister. I wasn’t sure if he liked me until

he had a Valentines Day balloon and some flowers delivered to my door. My house was 15 minutes drive from town, I didn’t know the florist delivered that far, it had never happened before! It was obviously a sweet surprise. What has it been like being Newlyweds? Murray: It has been great. I have always been excited about the day I would marry Meg. I am very proud to have Meg as my wife – (when did I get so lucky)? We are best friends, lovers and we share the same dreams. She is such an amazing person in so many ways and I pinch myself everyday that I am with her. Meg: After being together nearly 14 years, I didn’t think it would feel that different, but it does. Life is exciting because we think more about our future together and living out all the dreams we share. It has made me feel more settled and grateful that I found the person I want to share my life with.

Page 43: WILD & FREE

Can you please describe how the wedding day was spent? Murray: We spent the ceremony down at our lovely house with our families and close friends. After this we planted a plum tree in the garden to signify the day. Later we returned back up the road for the reception. There were a few lovely speeches, I sang a song for Meg and then we all danced the night away. Meg: Our wedding was in the country on the property we had bought, underneath a beautiful butterfly tree that coincidentally decided to be in full bloom!! We had the reception back at my parent’s house not far away. It was important for us to have a small intimate wedding with just our immediate families and some friends. The day was just beautiful. This amazing storm, with strong wind came just as Murray was driving me in our old Valiant to the ceremony, it was wild weather but it made it so ambient and memorable. The sun came out in the afternoon for photos and we spent most of the afternoon together alone with the photographer. I hear you bought a house in the country to renovate, what aspect of it made you think 'this is the one!'? Meg: For me it was some of the period features such as the French doors, the Federation style arch in the hallway and the wide wooden floorboards. It definitely wasn’t the bathroom with vines growing in the walls, or the bad ‘lino’ everywhere! I overlooked all this when I saw the claw foot bath! Another intriguing element was that because this house isn’t far away from my family home, as a girl I used to go down the road and play with a friend who lived next door to the house we bought. I used to think when I saw it that I would love to have a house like that one day. I’m still amazed that we ended up buying that exact

house. Murray: The house was much unloved and looked very sad, so I/we intuitively knew we were the ones to bring it back to life. I remember the day the dream started. It was mentioned to us by a next-door neighbour that said a little cottage down the road was up for sale. This news definitely planted a seed in Meg and my mind. My thought from the viewing with the agent was ‘I had to have it!’ The whole process was exhausting and definitely stressful, but we certainly knew this house was the one and we were willing to fight for it. When the house was declared officially ours, absolutely floating with excitement and we still are. Are you still madly in-love with it? Murray: Yes definitely, especially now because some of the major renovations have been completed and we are at an exciting stage. Every time you complete one section it fuels the next stage, and this process is addictive. It is also exciting because we are starting to see the possibilities that it offers not only on the developmental front but as well as when we start a family. Meg: Yes!! I am a visual person so I can see how beautiful it will be with more hard work and love. It was always my dream to do up an old house, they have so much soul and this one has a nice vibe- I love it! The more time I spend there, the more I love it because the aspect is also very special, we see the sun set behind the mountain range in the west most afternoons. The cows in the paddock next door are also fun to watch. What have been the ups and downs of renovating? Murray: There have been different ups and downs for the both of us. Definitely fibro removal has been a down that we have both faced - isolating areas in the house and

Page 44: WILD & FREE

getting suited up (which looks ridiculous with masks). I have learnt a lot on the job knocking out walls, repairing floor boards, tiling, replacing bearers and joists, framing up walls and many other great experiences. Meg: I think the ups in renovating are when you can see the work you have put in starting to take shape and match your vision. Its really satisfying going through photos together and seeing how far you have progressed. It’s also fun when you score a good bargain for the house, or on the other hand, when you splurge on items that the house really deserves to make it unique and special in the end result. You’re also making two dreams become one, so communicating and compromising have become so important. What made the both you want to move to the country? Murray: I love the country; it is so clean, clear and uncomplicated. I have always had an affinity with nature and the country, its just so amazing. I would become bored with a house in suburbia, surrounded by other houses, with close neighbours sharing the same outlook, and in some way, the same

life. I feel with living in the country we have something exclusive and special all to ourselves, something that we have and will treasure always. Overall a house on property has endless opportunities and adventures to be had which is also exciting. Another benefit for us is the fact that in-laws are just up the road, which is a great baby sitting opportunity. Meg: I love nature, I feel happy when I’m surrounded by it. The country is also in my heart because I was born and raised on a property. I love the peace and freshness, and I feel it’s a good place to raise a family. I like that life moves at a slower pace and that people have time to give. It’s also good for teaching work, you really experience being part of a community. Describe how you would spend a perfect Sunday at your home once everything has been finished? Meg: Breakfast on the veranda in the sun; fruit from our orchard, or eggs, home-grown tomato etc as part of the choice. Some gardening in the morning, then down to the river for a swim. Back to the house for a big salad sand which, then relax…..read a book in the sun, do some

Page 45: WILD & FREE

drawing or craft. Then a cup of tea with a slice of something yummy that has been baked. Wander through the garden, pick some fresh flowers, listen to Murray playing his guitar on the veranda and watch the sun go down. Murray: My perfect Sunday for the future involves children waking us in the morning then breakfast on the back deck overlooking the blue hazed mountains with ducks roaming in the garden and swimming in the dam. After this a cup of tea and a roam in the orchard/home garden, or if it is hot, possibly a walk to the river for a swim. Then lunch under the shade of a tree playing guitar and enjoying family time. What are the things you have learned in the past year and what advice would you pass on to other renovators? Meg: When you come up against an obstacle, it is wise to see it as a challenge and part of the journey rather than a struggle. I’ve found that some jobs run smoothly, others take time and persistence. If you’re going to be doing a lot of scrapping paint, which is what I’ve been doing, a good

sharp chisel is essential! Murray: My advice to pass on? Be prepared to feel a mixture of emotions in the process - frustration, excitement, proud, tired, mentally challenged, overwhelmed, surprised, emotional, ecstatic, enthusiastic, drained plus many more. It can be one of the greatest experiences you will ever have, enjoy every second as you will look back and really cherish the journey – as I have already. Lastly, tell us what is next on your to-do-list? Meg: House wise, the list is long and seems to get longer! We just polished the old floorboards and we are nearly ready to put the kitchen in. Otherwise, a family is on the horizon. Murray: We don’t have a kitchen or bathroom at the moment and half of our house is exposed to the wilderness, so I think these things are at the top of the to-do list for now. We need a tractor to slash our paddocks as the grass is as tall as I am, but I will just take it as it comes and enjoy the process of bringing a beautiful house back to life with my amazing wife.

WANDERERS !

Page 61: WILD & FREE

By Jenny Lee Cummings Where do you call home? Home will forever be my little coastal town of Merewether. Where in the world are you? I’m currently in Bordeaux, South-West of France where I have been living and studying for 4 months. In a few weeks though, I’ll leave my little studio apartment for an entire European summer where my location will change from day to day, country to country. What is your reason for being a current wanderer? I am lucky enough to have this opportunity due to my University degree that I am currently studying. I study a Bachelor of International Studies and a Bachelor of Design at the University of Technology Sydney, which permits me to study one year abroad. So here I am, studying at a French university. Plus, it’s pretty darn cool being a European student…. Free entry to all the Museums all over Europe! Perfect! We all get homesick every now and then, what do you miss about home the most? I guess my wonderful family goes without saying right? But yes, life here moves at a frighteningly fast pace so it is fairly rare I find myself longing for the familiar comforts of home. Nonetheless, there’s still those times I find my myself dreaming of the smallest things - a cup of coffee and vegemite toast whilst reading the morning newspaper, the smell of rain after a thunderstorm at dusk on a warm summer’s evening and, right now I do not have an oven in my place - I miss baking! What comes with this, interestingly, is the realization of what I can live without. It has been 4 months now and I am still yet to even turn on a television! Name and describe your happy place of where you are at the moment? For me I guess the ‘happy place’ is more metaphorical than anything. It’s a comfort and sense of feeling settled somewhere so far from home whilst having

the love and support from those that are not here. So right now it is exactly where I am. Bordeaux is beautiful, especially in the spring- it thrives with people picnicking and cycling. The trees have this iridescent green glow of health and the sun has comforting warmth that reminds me of home. Describe how you would spend a perfect day there? The pure beauty of an unfamiliar place is that there each day there is something new and exciting to see and do. A perfect day for me is purely that- the lack of repetitiveness and potential for possibility. Waking up to the sun shining through my window deciding instantaneously what that day will bring. A new restaurant to eat dinner? A different bar to drink at? And almost always, new people with different stories to tell. Whatever the day brings, it is certain to end with a glass or two of Bordeaux’s finest red wine. By Monique Arnold Where do you call home? My childhood home is Newcastle, a small beach town but my adopted home is the suburbs of Sydney. Where in the world are you? Hanging out with the misfits in East London. For now anyways. What is your reason for being a current wanderer? I have always been a bit of a gypsy. After growing up in a small beach town for 19 years, where it felt like everyone knew the intimate details of my life, I escaped to the big city to start my career in fashion and be able to hit the local Coles without running into fifteen people I know... Three years later I realised Sydney was just as small and moved to America for a while to finish my studies and take a break from full time work. Whilst traveling around the US and Europe I visited London and fell in love with London and decided to pack up shop and move yet again. We all get

Page 62: WILD & FREE

homesick every now and then, what do you miss about home the most? I miss mainly the company of my friends. Lying by my pool at my family home in Newcastle with childhood friends, sipping coffee and people watching in Newtown with my girls and partying downtown with my American gang in Iowa City. For me it’s pretty impossible to be with all my friends in the one place so luckily there are Skype, Viber and Imsg to ease any homesickness when it hits. Name and describe your happy place of where you are at the moment? I am currently living with a bunch of Aussies (my adopted family) in East London where we spend our time exploring the many amazing London markets, grabbing a cider from the local pub, trying not to spend all of our pay packets shopping (quite a challenge with Zara, H&M, Urban Outfitters, All Saints, Top Shop and River Island all a few minutes away) and planning the countries and festivals we are going to venture to in the coming months. Describe how you would spend a perfect day there? Saturdays are typically this, my perfect day. A bunch of friends and I all go for a morning run along the canal to our local park that wakes me up and gives me energy for the weekend ahead. My roomies and I then head to London Fields, our local market to grab a coffee and our fresh bread, cheese, eggs, fruit and veggies for the week. We spend half the time sampling freshly made pesto dips and spreads. Typically I then head out for lunch to meet up with a friend before heading to the shops or an exhibition at the Tate or V&A. In the evening we either have friends round for drinks and dinner or head out to either Dalston or Shoreditch for a night of partying. By Pauline Skewes Where do you call home? I grew up in a

small town surrounded by the ocean called Port Stephens. I went to school there, I grazed my knees falling off my first bike there, I fell in-love for the first time there and a lot of my friends and my family I miss dearly still dwell amongst there. It’s that type of small town where you know the local bakers name and you are faced to participate in award small talks with a teacher you had in high school, because there is not a doubt that if you walked its never changing streets, you would cross paths from someone from your past. But in some strange and peculiar way, it has shaped me into the being that I am and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Where in the world are you? I am currently living in an old rustic motorhome with my lover. Together we have driven 7,000 miles along the American road and wandering throughout the small towns of Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada and Texas - young, wild and free. We are on the last leg of this wondrous trip before we fly to our new and sparkling town London. There we will undertake new adventures to live, work and love hard to our hearts content. If only for a little while. What is your reason for being a current wanderer? To chase life and live freely before life chases me down to heavier things. We all get homesick every now and then, what do you miss about home the most? I have loved and lost a lot alongside with my mother and sister. So the mountains we have climbed together has made us three all really close to one-another. Needless to say on a sucky day, I really miss them a lot. Name and describe your happy place of where you are at the moment? When we are travelling between towns. Driving around in our campervan, window down with the wind in my hair. I never close my eyes and spend hours daydreaming about the town we are heading to next and what adventures we can get up to there. Just

Page 63: WILD & FREE

being happy fulfilling my wanderlust. Describe how you would spend a perfect day there? I would wake up in the warmth of partners arms, we would make breakfast and climb the rooftop of our campervan to eat and talk about our journey for the day. We would drive for hours, stopping for gas and cold drinks every now and then, stumbling across small fascinating towns. We would pull up for lunch and the locals would tell us proud stories about their town. Soon after Kieran would tell me that we have arrived and we would hire bikes and find a river to swim in with hanging trees and stay in the timid water until our fingers became wrinkly. I would cook us dinner in our van and we would climb the roof again to stargaze the night away. By Melanie Tjoeng Where do you call home? That is an interesting question for me. My friend Andrew did a speech in front of our entire graduating class at Hawaii Pacific University and he said, "Home is wherever you are able to say, I love you." And that always stuck with me. I feel like home is wherever I feel the most alive. I don't know if its because I am mixed race or because I was born to two wandering parents but I've never had one place that I call home. I've had many. The three stand out places that resonate with my heart are, Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and Mexico. They stir my soul. Where in the world are you? At this very moment I am in San Diego, California. But I have been in Los Angeles for the past three weeks; shooting and meeting new people. In a couple of days I will be going back to Hawaii and I am so excited. What is your reason for being a current wanderer? I never really need a reason to travel, it's usually more the need to get away, to be in another place, another headspace. The yearning for

unknown roads and faces with no names. The need to feel completely free; no schedules, no chores, and without the daily grind. I feel like I get the most out of life when I travel. But in this instance I flew to LA for an interview and then I'm going to Hawaii for my 30th birthday. We all get homesick every now and then, what do you miss about home the most? I get homesick for Hawaii all the time, everyday actually. I couldn't tell you all the things I miss about it because it would be inappropriately long! Haha. But the edited version would be - the mountains that meet the sea, the spirit of aloha, the warmth of the people, the way you can be whoever you want to be there and no one looks sideways, the Asian and Polynesian food, the overwhelming sense of family ("Ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind") Waimea bay and the way its waters fix all things, my friends, feeling happy every day, car rides to the north shore with the music blaring and the trade winds rushing past us, learning, being involved in different and wonderful things every day. Name and describe your happy place of where you are at the moment? I am in San Diego in Southern California. I am staying at one of my best friends places and we are just enjoying spending time together. San Diego is such a nice area, lots of thing to see and do. Yesterday we went to the border of Tijuana and I could feel Mexico calling me. This is one of the reasons I love California, it's proximity to Mexico and the Hispanic culture that is so pervasive here. Describe how you would spend a perfect day there? Well, today, for instance we are going to Old Town and having a Mexican feast, looking at Native American jewelry and walking around taking photos. That is a pretty perfect day for me.

QUENTIN TARANTINO RETROSPECTIVE By PAULINE SKEWES You know that question people ask: ”Who would you invite for dinner, dead or alive?’” Well, it’s as simple as this – on the top of my list would be none other than Mr. Quentin Tarantino. Hands down. Let me start from the beginning. Quentin Tarantino was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and raised in Los Angeles. He was a high school dropout at the age of sixteen to take acting classes at the James Best Theatre Company. As a teenager, Tarantino first earned his bread and butter at the video store he lived in on Manhattan Beach, California called Video Archives. Here he spent the majority of his youth watching, studying and becoming smitten with obtuse films. Luckily for us, this is how the romance between Tarantino and films began.

Tarantino’s first few big bucks came from selling scripts such as Natural Born Killers and True Romance during his early twenties (as you do); the first commercially successful film he wrote and directed was Reservoir Dogs (1992), which he was originally going to shoot with some friends on the budget of thirty-thousand dollars. However, thanks to Harvey Keitel- who plays Mr. White in the movie- Tarantino was handed one-and-a-half million dollars to play with instead. This became the turning point in this now-prominent director’s career. It was as if he flicked his blinker and merged into the fast lane, leaving everybody else behind. Reservoir Dogs later grossed at six-and-a-half million. Not bad at all. It later provided him with the two tools he needed most to make his next and best film; cash meant a higher budget and confidence meant balls.

Page 69: WILD & FREE

!

If Tarantino treated his films as his children, Pulp Fiction (1994) should be the favourite. It holds the plot of four tales of violence and redemption colliding within the Los Angeles underworld. You’re able to get your money’s worth purely from watching the Bible-quoting character that is Jules, played by Samuel L. Jackson, and it scored Tarantino his first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Need I say more? Now for Jackie Brown (1997)– a movie about a flight attendant who gets caught smuggling her boss’s gun money. The film provided both lead actress Pam Grier, in the title role, and Robert Forster a much needed comeback movie. Much like John Travolta, who was suffering from acting obscurity throughout his career prior to Tarantino waving his directing wand his way with Pulp Fiction. It’s safe to say the man can certainly create memorable characters and cast them to perfection providing them with memorable quotations such as: “They call it a Royale with Cheese…“ When someone asks me the difficult question of which Tarantino movie is my favourite, I become restless, simply because it’s a hard task. Ultimately, the Kill Bill movies win me over every time. Perhaps this is because both movies are based around Beatrix Kiddo (code name: Black Mamba, played by Uma Thurman), a formidable female assassin who is a ruthless warrior out to seek revenge on the Deadly Viper Association Squad, a team of deadly killers under the ruling of her ex boss/lover Bill (kung-fu legend David Carradine.) Both volumes consist of a hand-written hit list, Japanese samurai swords and a truck called “The Pussy Wagon.” Lock it in, Eddie. Naturally when you are Mr. Tarantino, you hold acquaintances like other prominent directors- Robert Rodriguez, for example. The two joined forces in 2007 to give tribute to Grindhouse movies, a ’70s trend where inner-city movie theaters would screen extreme, low-budget

independent films containing an abundant amount of violence and nudity as a means to compromise and contest with under-the-thumb big-budget studio films. Here, Tarantino provided us with Deathproof, a film about two separate sets of voluptuous women who are stalked by a stuntman called Mike (Kurt Russel), who uses his ‘death-proof’ car to lure and slay women. It is a dialogue-driven film giving a deliberate nod to the cult and horror films of yesteryear. Nowadays, it is too often that you walk out of a movie theater wondering if you should have saved your pennies and stayed at home instead. It is very rare that you are able to sit through a whole film with adrenaline pumping from your chest and an entertained grin or your face. However, the last time I was able to experience this was with Tarantino’s latest production Inglorious Basterds which he spent over a decade writing. The plot is based around a group of hardened Nazi-killers who stalk their prey in occupied France as a Jewish cinema owner plots to take down top-ranking SS officers during the official premiere of a high-profile German propaganda film. How Tarantino managed to create a World War II film containing unpredictable humour with the music of David Bowie and make it a sensation is beyond me. All I know is that if a sixteen-year-old boy that worked at a video store turned around and said to me, “You know, I’m going to write some of the best scripts and direct some notoriously renowned kick-ass movies one day!”, I would most likely tell that kid to beat it and keep dreamin’.

Eddie Vedder | Ukulele Songs By Ty Brennock Eddie Vedder, back in the 90's, wore stupid mismatched second-hand clothing despite having money, used a type-writer and notebooks only, listened to fucked up music no one else knew, only listened to music on vinyl, carried around a Polaroid camera and a Super 8 recorder, smoked a lot ad drank too much red wine, and played the ukulele. I’m pretty sure he was the original and truest hipster, but hipsters are too cool to recognize this. As I alluded to in Issue 1 of this fine publication, I am a Pearl Jam tragic. For this I do not apologize. It turned me on to an array of music that I otherwise may not have taken such a passionate interest in (namely Neil Young, Bad Religion, Ramones and The Who). So when it was announced that

Eddie Vedder was to release an album of ukulele songs, I didn’t think “What the fuck?!” I thought… I have heard rumors of this album being around since mid-2000’s when Kelly Slater let slip that his favourite album was EV’s uke album (apparently a very select few including Kelly SL8R and Jack Johnson were given a copy of the demo album back around then). The story goes Ed was waiting outside a general store in Hawaii and the uke caught his eye, winked at him, and the rest is history! “Soon Forget” was it’s first outing and appeared on the PJ album Binaural back in 2000, loosely based on Bill Gates and loosely stolen from The Who/Pete Townsend’s “Blue Red Grey”. So a album full… fucking brilliant and a fucking great surprise that it is brilliant from

Page 71: WILD & FREE

front to back! Why? A few reasons, it was used as the barest tool of exhuming human emotion during a time where EV’s marriage to former Hovercraft hipster Beth Liebling had come to a close, the dynamics of a band had changed and were lacking oomph, he’d been courting a young model that would eventually become his wife, coming to terms with the tragic deaths of 9 fans in Roskilde, and feeling like a sailor without a shore to call home, spending a lot of time with his own company in Hawaii. I often find a collection of demos can be amongst the best music an artist releases, point being Ryan Adams' "Demolition" album. Same goes. Starting with the Pearl Jam track "Can't Keep" the opener shows that this isn't an aged dude who no longer gives a fuck, nor a hipster loser being safe. The accompanying clip shows EV perched alone on a coastal isle, verbosely declare "You can't keep me here!" Followed by the heart-breaking "Sleeping By Myself", you know this is amongst the best lyrics the famed lyricist has spat out since mid-90's Pearl Jam, deeply personal and not attaching any abstract or political themes, just about the heart, man! Every song attaches itself to heartbreak and coming to terms with indefinite and foreseen new beginnings. "Longing To Belong" could be played at every wedding, everywhere (and even argued it to be played at my upcoming nuptials). "Hey Fahkah" provides a light-hearted interlude sowing that whilst the mind-set during the writing of these tunes was pretty fucked and miserable, life's pretty peachy now! Closing out the record is the touching "Tonight You Belong To Me" featuring Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power (as EV appeared on her 2003 effort "You Are Free"), and a lullaby cover of "Dream A Little Dream".

Yes, I'm biased. (If you want a fucking snotty critique go to Pitchfork), and I promise the next issue's piece will have nothing to do with Pearl Jam, but it's a refreshing folk album from a familiar voice, singing lyrics we have hoped to hear from him for a long time. EV/PJ are here to stay, whether you are a fan or not. This record is beautiful; your girlfriend will love it if you don't. Full of insecurity, hope, longing and love, these are songs good enough to make your sweetheart cry and good enough to make you sing-along to, yo!

O H B A B Y , B A B Y I T ’ S A W I L D W O R L D . By Pauline Skewes I remember this one teacher I had at my high school. (Let’s hypothetically call her Mrs. Stephenson for privacy reasons). Mrs. Stephenson was tall with short dark frizzy hair. She wore a constant frown on her bitter face. She was never pleasant to be around and I was confident at the time that I was to learn absolutely nothing from this woman. She would often make threats at my classmates and I about ‘the real world’. Referring to our high school lives as the ‘easy days’ and would warn us all of the big bad universe that was waiting for us after we

stepped out of our high school gates for good. I remember being scared and naïve about the future, angry how Mrs. Stephenson refused to provide some upbeat words of wisdom instead. But little did I know, that it would be Mrs. Stephenson I would learn from the most. Next chapter. I finally found myself initially suffering from the normal angst of entering ‘the real world’. Wandering along the winding road of

independence and adulthood, smack bang in the middle of new words like – jobs, rent and relationships. All the while, trying to still figure out amongst it all, what my dreams were actually made of. Suddenly, there were many decisions to be made, paths to choose, things to loose, hearts to be broken and lessons to learn. And as my shoulders grew heavier and heavier, I was beginning to think that Mrs. Stephenson was right after all. Everything was a little bit scary out here. It’s funny, when I was a little girl, all I ever dreamed about was a pool in my backyard to cool off during summer, to be allowed to play with my friends on the streets till it became dark and getting a shiny sticker on my homework to assure me that I was doing the right thing. Then I grew a little older and all I dreamed about then was having fun on the weekends, talking on the phone all night and finding self worth on the reflection of the million and one friends I had. But after walking out of those high school gates, ‘the real world’ ultimately changed my dreams once again. My heart grew bigger and my skin became thicker. I started to dream about finding a house with a white picket fence and making it a home, I wanted to soar off, high into the blue skies and land in different parts of the world to explore and find different places and different people, but most of all, I wanted to fall madly in-love. I quickly realised that those scary words I learned – jobs, rent and relationships were not that scary after all. That it is these exact things that goes hand-in-hand to living out my dreams. I wished Mrs. Stephenson said this to me instead – ‘If you work hard and love hard, the world is yours. So go and get it!’ I recently blew out 25 candles on my

birthday cake and as I grew a little older and a little wiser, I have learned that the tools I need to survive ‘the real world’ are the many things I was taught from the very beginning. As a little girl my parents would tell me to look after my things, to share, to treat others as I would like to be treated, not to be mean, to forgive and to say sorry to someone when I have hurt them. And how the same rules apply from when I was first learning to ride my bike back then to chasing my dreams now. How one day I can be pedaling fast along a familiar street of my hometown, no hands, no worries. Then the next minute, a bump on the road causes me to fall off my bike, flat on my face, the gravel scraping my knees and bruising my pride. It is during these crashes I quickly learn that some people will rush to my aide, while others are more than happy to watch me fall. But just like in the real world, the key to chasing your dreams is to get up, wipe the dirt of your knees, bare the pain, hop back on your bike with a smile on my face and continue pedaling. I thought about Mrs. Stephenson and all the bitter things she would say to me back then. I wondered about how many times she had fallen off her bike. Or perhaps she was one of those that fell off and never got back up? I want to tell her that this real world she warned me about was not that bad after all. That it’s actually full of wondrous things, magical places and people offering everlasting friendships and love. That nothing beats falling in-love with others, let alone learning to fall in-love with yourself. Creating and living out dreams and being excited for the days to come, no matter how scary it may all seem. After all, they say – if your dreams don’t scare you, then they are not big enough. And the truth is, I would rather be scared than dreamless any day!
