Accolade for Willingham Free Press

Back in 2006 a group of like-minded individuals decided tomake use of the plethora of available apples within thevillage. Rather than leave them to the thrushes they decidedto harvest them and send them for pressing. That initialharvest equated to some 225 bottles of juice once pressed, but by 2013, with additional contributions, that had grownto in excess of 900 bottles of juice from the gardens andorchards within the Willingham boundary.

Whilst the majority of the resultant product is drunk aspure apple juice, some drinkers have chosen to take it astage further and produce cider from the juice for theirpersonal consumption and enjoyment.Following favourable comments, both with regard to the

source apple juice and the resultant ciders, one member ofWillingham Free Press, Graham Mumby, decided to test thewaters a little further…..The month of May saw the prestigious Cambridge Beer

Festival. The East Anglian CAMRA cider group holds twocompetitions each year for cider production, the one forbottled cider being judged at the aforementioned Festival. So diving in at the deep end, Graham duly submitted two

examples of his cider for consideration in the categories of‘Vintage’ and ‘2012 Harvest’ Cider. We were very pleased for Graham when it was announced

that, out of around 26 entries, he had won first prize for the‘Vintage’ and third prize for the ‘2012’.So well done, Graham, your efforts have not been in vain,

and the plaudits completely justified.A presentation ceremony was held at The Bank where

Graham received his awards from Chris Rouse of theCAMRA Cider Group.

Gardening Tips for Augustand September

• Don’t forget to deadhead dahlias and other late summerflowers to keep them flowering.

• Water and feed pot plants regularly.• There is still time to sow a late lettuce crop.• Apply an autumn feed to lawns.• Save runner beans which have grown too old to dry out

in paper bags for seed next season.• Cuttings should be taken of tender or favourite plants to

preserve your stocks.• Cut back (prune) roses which have finished flowering so

that they are ready to withstand the first frosts, topromote stronger growth next season, and to shape them.

Fen Edge Family Exodus Bike RideA long caravan of yellow wasseen on the Guided Buswayaround noon on 6 July as the 65plus Fen Edge Family Exodusriders in their ‘Maillots Jaunes’made their way fromLongstanton to Parker’s Piece toenjoy the pre-Tour-de-FranceVelo Festival. The weather wasperfect and the ride wasincident-free (the Buswayauthorities will be pleased, andto them a special thanks forgiving us permission to stage theride). Everyone appeared toenjoy the travelling company, the 8.5 miles of gentlychanging scenery and the much merited beer at the end ofthe ride (other refreshments were available – in fact,Parker’s Piece was buzzing). With the cost of posterprinting and marshal bibs covered by a gratefully receivedVelo Festival Cycle Legacy grant from Cambridge CountyCouncil, the event raised over £470 for Marie Curie Cancer

Care, the official Tour De France charity. So a huge thanksto everyone from the organisers, Willingham Wheels(www.willinghamwheels.com). Anyone moved to donate to this wonderful charity (Marie

Curie, not Willingham Wheels!) can still do so online atuk.virginmoneygiving.com/FenEdgeExodus.

Language of Love

In the Book of Genesis (11.1-9) there is a story of the

Tower of Babel. People overwhelmed by self-

importance, decided to build the tower that would reach

heaven, the dwelling place of God. They said: ‘Come, let us

build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and

let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered

abroad upon the face of the whole earth.’ They began a great

work but they never finished it. The Bible says that they

failed to understand each other. God confused their

language, so they were not able to understand one

another’s speech.

This story should not be taken literally. The tower of

Babel is the image of spiritual blindness, which causes

us to do something exceptional that will make us famous

and our name known. In ancient times many buildings

were built for that simple reason. In our time, most

buildings are built for practical purposes, but the desire

to be better than others has not been removed. Also in

our private life there is a danger of building our own

tower of Babel. In general it can be anything that marks

out our importance and superiority. In all these

situations there is a serious danger of breaking

relationships and losing contact with other people.

Those who have plenty to eat are not able to

understand the one who is starving. Both can speak

perfect English but they do not understand each other.

One who has a great house or estate will never

understand the one who is homeless. They talk the same

language but they do not understand each other. A

husband who fully dedicates himself to his job and has

no time for his family is not able to understand his wife

and children. All these situations can be defined as

‘confused language.’ The building of the tower of Babel

has always this same negative effect and often leads to

disaster in a human life.

What is the remedy for this kind of spiritual

blindness? One day Mother Theresa started to work with

those dying on the streets of Calcutta. Her gesture was

understood by Muslims, Buddhists, Catholics,

Protestants and many others, even those who do not

believe in God. She had spoken to the world with the

language of love. The language of love is the only

language in the world that is understood by everyone.

LOOKING BACK

World War 1The outbreak of war in 1914 casta giant shadow over life in ruralvillages. Looking back, theCambridge Independent Press of 7 May 1915 reported that arecruitment campaign wasunderway in most villages. Therecruiting party had duly arrivedat Willingham on the Saturdayafternoon from Over. Theymarched on the Green to themusic of their band and thendispersed to their billets wherethey were all very comfortable. However the article reported thatwas the highest spot in their visitas despite all their efforts, not asingle recruit was obtained. This edition also announced

that a military wedding had takenplace at the Parish Church onTuesday 27 April. The bridegroom was Sergeant FrankSmith of the 11th Service Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Smith and the bridewas Miss Florence Mabel Haddow, eldest daughter of Mrand Mrs Harry Haddow of the Rose and Crown, HighStreet. The paper reported that Private R Saddler, 1STSuffolk Regiment was best man in the absence of the bride’sbrother who was a prisoner of war in Germany. The CIP issue of the 20 August highlighted an

improvement in the situation. Eleven married men and 55single men of military age in Willingham were now serving. The paper said that it was interesting to note how well the

married men had responded tothe call to arms.Of course several villagers

made the ultimate sacrifice in theservice of their country. The CIPnewspaper of 10 September 1915reported that Mr W Hayden ofNew Town, Willingham hadreceived a telegram informinghim of the death of his eldest sonLance-Corporal Manoah of theWellington Infantry, NewZealand Expeditionary Force. Hehad died of wounds andpneumonia on 15 August in theDardanelles. The sorrowingparents also received thefollowing message:‘The Governor is commanded

by the King to assure you of thetrue sympathy of his Majesty and

the Queen in your sorrow – Kitchener’Lance- Corporal Manoah Hayden had left Willingham

two years previously for Australia. From there he had goneto New Zealand and joined the Expeditionary Force whichwas sent to the Dardanelles. The paper believed that he wasthe first Willingham man to have been killed in thisEuropean War.

The MotherIf you should die, think only this of me:In that still quietness where is space for thought,Where parting, loss and bloodshed shall not be,And men may rest themselves and dream of nought; That in some place a mystic mile awayOne whom you loved has drained the bitter cupTill there is nought to drink; has faced the dayOnce more, and now, has raised the standard up.

And think, my son, with eyes grown clear and dry She lives as though for ever in your sight,Loving the things you loved, with heart aglowFor country, honour, truth, traditions high, - Proud that you paid their price. (And if some nightHer heart should break- well, lad, you will not know.)

This month we see a Romany Gypsy family taken in theircaravan during the 1930s. Or do we? Well, you would beforgiven for thinking so, but an older village member toldme that this picture was taken during a village parade.Every year families in the village would compete bydressing up in all sort of outfits and costumes. This familyowned a caravan and turned out in style. In past years mucheffort was put into parades which sometimes raised moneyfor local hospitals.See more photos at www.oldwillingham.comComments to: Jon Edney at [email protected]
