SUMMARY THE PLANT CYCLE Teacher: Ms. Harris
DEFINITION
The plant cycle is cycle which shows the different stages a plant shows throw, it start from a seed to an adult plant.
Cycle means that
the processes never end, the continue on and on.
THE PLANT CYCLE
The plant cycle consist of five (5) main stages or phases. Namely:
1. Germination 2. Growth of young plant 3. Growth of mature plant 4. Growth of flowers and fruits5. Dispersal
STAGE 1 GERMINATION
Germination is the process by which a plant grows from a seed.
During the process of germination the testa (seed coat) splits and the embryo plant starts to grow out.
GROWTH OF YOUNG PLANT- STAGE 2
The seed becomes a seedling. It grows roots and begins to sprout leaves Starts sprouting a stem. Roots are an essential part of the plant life-
cycle. Without the roots, there would be no way for
the plant to absorb water and get it up to the leaves.
Most roots are located underground though some remain above the ground a little.
GROWTH OF MATURE PLANT –STAGE 3
Plant get mature at this stage It now has stems which are developed The developed stems carry water
throughout the plant. The transfer of water throughout the
plant is called transpiration.
GROWTH OF FLOWERS AND FRUITS- STAGE 4
After plants mature the stage is flowering. Flowers originally developed as a way to
attract insects for pollination. Some flowers adapted for pollination by birds
and even bats. Many flowers depend upon the wind to
scatter pollen.
GROWTH OF FLOWERS AND FRUITS- STAGE 4
The flowers on the plant is where pollination takes place.
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma.
After pollination takes place, pollen grain fuse or join with an egg cell inside the ovary.
This fusion of the male and female cells is called fertilization.
GROWTH OF FLOWERS AND FRUITS- STAGE 4
After fertilization, the whole flower starts to change.
The sepals, petals and stamens dry up and fall off. the pistil changes the most.
the ovary grows larger and develops into a fruit with one or more seeds inside.
DISPERSAL- STAGE 5
A seed contains everything necessary to produce a new plant.
When a seed leaves the fruit or flower we call it dissemination.
If the seed is in fruit, dissemination occurs when the fruit falls from the plant or when an animal carries the fruit away.
