Suggested wording for using the wiki tool in online learning activitiesTRANSCRIPT
Wiki activities
Within each box below is suggested wording for a learning activity using an online
wiki tool. Each is based on actual activities used in UK Higher Education. They have
been de-contextualised so that educators can input their context. A key feature of
these activities is the process support provided in the wordings establishing how the
students should engage in the activity AND how the educator will be engaging. This
is something strongly recommended.
Information exchange
Glossary creation wiki activity
On the subject of xxxx, there is a lot that is relevant to your studies. I have set up a
shared area called xxxx using the wiki tool. Within this area, you will find empty
pages setup for each of the topics. Please research 3 terms and add definitions to
the relevant pages within the wiki. You will find it useful to visit this space and read
what others’ write. This activity will run throughout the whole module and will be a
useful resource for you.
Blended Learning context –
Group project information repository wiki use
At the next face-to-face session, your group will be asked to present on the topic
xxxx. To facilitate the knowledge gathering stage of this process, upload ideas or
resources to your group wiki so that these can be studied by all members of the
group. Use the comments/discussion facility of the wiki to exchange ideas. At the
next face-to-face session you will be given time to prepare and plan your
presentation.
Knowledge construction
Co-creating wording on concept/topic wiki activity
In your small group, construct a summary of xxxx [insert issue/area/problem here].
This activity uses the wiki tool which allows you to collaboratively create some text in
the area provided. This tool allows you to edit what others’ write, this is an important
part of the process and so do not worry if this happens to you. I recommend that you
use the comments/discussion area of the wiki to explain any additions or changes
that you make. This area can also be used to for some discussion as the text gets
finalised. One member of the group has been appointed as co-ordinator for this
task. He/she is responsible for facilitating the process and ensuring that an agreed
version is produced. Your group might like to divide responsibility within this task;
however you are encouraged to share ideas on the same topics. Please present the
final version in the allotted Discussion so that other groups can see what you have
done.
Group project wiki activity
In your small group work collaboratively to produce an educational resource on the
subject of xxxx [insert issue/area/problem here] for 3 weeks. This activity uses the
wiki tool which allows you to upload text, images and multimedia in the area
provided. This tool allows you to edit/delete what others’ produce, this is an
important part of the process and so do not worry if this happens to you. I
recommend that you use the comments/discussion area of the wiki to explain any
additions or changes that you make. This area can also be used to for some
discussion as the text gets finalised. One member of the group has been appointed
as co-ordinator for this task. He/she is responsible for facilitating the process and
ensuring that an agreed output is produced. Your group might like to divide
responsibility within this task; however you are encouraged to share ideas on the
same topics. Please email the finished product by xxxx to your tutor who will provide
feedback and upload to the VLE course area for your fellow participants to see.
