Following on from last year’s highly successful inaugural event, Joining Jack has been working hard with supporting partners Wigan Council and the WLCT to bring you an even bigger and better Wigan 10k in 2014. If you have already registered, we look forward to seeing you - and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for!

Last Year’s RaceLast year’s race saw over 2600 runners register to take part, crowds of people lining the street to cheer them on, and resulted in thousands of pounds being raised for many different charities as well as event organisers Joining Jack.

The race couldn’t have gone ahead without our many volunteers, so if you or someone that you know would be interested in helping us out on the day, please get in touch - e-mail us at [email protected]

"The event was very well managed and it lifted the whole town" Donna Hall, Chief Executive, Wigan Council

Last Year’s Race Testimonials

"This is an outstanding example of race organisation at its very best. Well done to all concerned"

UK Athletics Post Race Report

"I reckon it was the best town centre event I have covered in around 20 years of working at the paper."

The race route will be the same as last year - starting on Market Street and making its way towards the DW Stadium via Parson’s Walk, Park Road, Woodhouse Lane, Scott Lane and Stadium Way before looping through the Martland Mill area and back through the newly re-vamped Mesnes Park to finish at the starting point on Market Street. There will be a water station at the DW Stadium, approximately 4km into the race, and a second water station in Mesnes Park. There will also be first aid support at the start/finish line and at points on the route.

The race will be held on closed roads and will be signed and marshalled.

Many runners found the route to be fairly flat and fast - we heard that a lot of those taking part last year managed to get personal bests!

Please encourage your friends and family to come along and cheer you on from the sidelines - the atmosphere around the route was amazing last year, and we want it to be even better this time around!

Joining Jack, the partner charity of the Wigan 10k, was founded in 2012 by Andy and Alex Johnson following the devastating news that their son, Jack, had been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

This progressive and currently incurable muscle wasting disorder is one of the most common fatal genetic conditions worldwide, affecting approximately one in 3500 boys. The money that Joining Jack raises goes to help fund crucial research into the development of a treatment for DMD.

There are no words to describe the utter devastation felt upon hearing that your child’s life will be cut short because there is no cure. We have had the greatest pleasure watching Jack develop into the amazing boy he is today but now, unbelievably, we must prepare ourselves for his steady decline.

Currently there is very little awareness of DMD, and research into finding a possible treatment is drastically underfunded. However, over the past few years, with help from charities around the world, clinical trials have begun to take place with encouraging results. This spurred us on to set up our own charity, to help move things forward for Jack and others like him. We cannot sit back and watch Jack ravaged by this condition if there is any chance that we can make his future a more positive one.”

Alex and Andy Johnson

“Failing a medical breakthrough, Jack's life will follow a path pre-determined by his condition. In short, he will no longer be able to walk by the time he reaches adolescence and will lose the use of every muscle in his body thereafter. Eventually his heart and lungs will fail and he will die.

Entertainment and Refreshments:The event will be hosted by Wish FM DJ Chris Milow, and there will be live performances from a number of great local bands on the day.

We have also arranged for the continental food markets and a beer tent to be present in the town centre on the day of the event, as well as the days running up to it - so both runners and supporters will be able to a get hearty, healthy snacks and well deserved drinks!
