The Local Mags Team

Hello dear reader!Welcome to the latest edition of

Widnes Local... Remember we’re the little magazine with the BIG distribution!

Does life go quicker the older you get? (That was a rhetorical question, I don’t really want an answer, ‘specially off you Mr LocalMags…). I can’t believe we’re almost half way through our magazine year, and what an exciting few months we have ahead of us! I don’t know if you remember my excitement at THAT Royal Wedding, well The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations has me in a complete tizz! I am one of the 1000s and 1000s (and 1000s…) of residents that have applied for one of the 10,000 places to watch the celebrations from seats around the Queen Victoria Memorial outside of Buckingham Palace. Realistically I’m probably not going to get one, but I can keep my fingers crossed and dream! If not I will be glued to the telly coverage, my royal bunting decking my living room, enjoying a nice cup of team and a home baked cake (thanks mum!).

We’ve got TWO great competitions this month – in recognition of the Queens Diamond Jubilee instead of our popular ‘spot our little jigsaw logo’ we’re having a ‘spot the crown’ competition. Same great prize – you’ll win £50 cash! Simply email, text or phone your entry... Good luck! The other amazing competition is from Matt Fiddes Martial Arts. Steve James, the local franchisee is offering an prize worth an incredible £400! The prize is 3 months family membership for up to 2 adults and 2 children, this includes all the tuition and the uniforms for everyone! What a way for a family to be active and

having fun TOGETHER! I love that prize. Have a look at page 42 for more details.

Last month’s winner is Loraine Middlehurst! Well done Loraine. Like I said last month... I love ringing up our lucky winner – they’re always so nice!! Thank you all for entering!

I thought I’d finish my letter this month with a little look at inspirational messages. I really aim to live my life in a very positive way, always (try!) to see the best in people, really appreciate how blessed I am and how much luck I have had in my life but sometimes it just feels a bit harder than it should or indeed really is! Life sometime seems to conspire against you and it’s at times like that when I like to look at the little stash of inspiration I keep on my computer. I save little bits of allsorts – some pictures or images that have made me smile, maybe something someone has emailed over to me or maybe something it’s just something I’ve seen on the internet, probably on facebook. One of the favourite quotes I’ve seen recently is this one from that well known author Anonymous..it suits me down to the ground as I have to say I am a bit of a Procrastinator! What keeps you motivated?

Until next time...

A Queen By Any Other Name

There won’t be many republicans in evidence in London this summer. Even non-royalists will be caught up in the pageantry of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations; an event guaranteed, even more so than the Olympics, to lift the nation’s spirits at a time of general despondency. As part of the celebrations The Queen has granted city status to four UK towns: Perth in Scotland; St Asaph in Wales; Chelmsford in England and Armagh in Northern Ireland.

There was another time in history when the country’s collective spirits needed lifting – sixty years ago. Residential streets were closed to traffic so that local communities could hold street parties. Bunting and Union flags hung from lines strung from upstairs windows on either side of the streets. Makeshift tables sagged under the weight of sandwiches, jelly and custard and bottles of Tizer.

Games were organized, one of which consisted of the father of a family threading a needle and cotton which he then handed to his impatiently waiting offspring who would sprint down the road to the mother. The mother would sew a button onto a square of material which the offspring would then rush to the referee. Not all the families could participate in this game; some of the fathers had not returned home eight years previously.

In the evening we sat round our wireless sets to listen to our new Queen’s speech: “…Throughout all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust…”

In this speech the Queen also paid tribute to the support of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the speech is as relevant today as it was sixty years ago.

Times changed. Britain changed;

in some cases beyond recognition. But there has been one constant: a tower of strength whose influence will not be fully appreciated until she is no longer with us.

In a much earlier speech, made in Cape Town on her twenty-first birthday, 21 April 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared “… my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service…” Well, we all know now that it was to be long. We also know that she meant every word she said.

How differently history would have read had her would-be assassin, Marcus Sarjeant, succeeded in acquiring a real gun and live ammunition. The mentally disturbed teenager fired six blank shots at the Queen as she rode in the Trooping the Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981. He was quickly overpowered by Police Sergeant John Woodcock and St John Ambulance man John Heaseman. He told them “I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody.” And he had written a diary entry: ‘I am going to stun and mystify the world. I will become the most famous teenager in the world.’

Most notable was Elizabeth II’s majestic reaction to the incident. As her horse, nineteen-year-old Burmese, panicked and reared she calmly brought him under control and continued with the scheduled ride

to Horseguards Parade, comforting him with a few pats on the neck while turning to smile at the cheering crowd.

This was, allegedly, the second attempt on the Monarch’s life. According to a retired senior police officer in Australia he was in charge of an investigation in 1981 after a train carrying the Queen and Prince Philip collided with a large log which had been placed on the track after police and a pilot train had passed along the route. There has so far been no comment from Buckingham Palace on the validity of these claims. True or false I doubt that the Queen loses much sleep over these stories.

It was the Queen’s consort, HRH Prince Philip, who pointed out that sometimes a position is more important than the person who occupies that position. With typical clarity he had put the concept in a nutshell: if a nation chooses to have a figurehead then there must be a human to give that position substance, but the human is secondary to the position, not vice versa. For the past sixty years we have been fortunate in having a person worthy of that position; a person of supreme dignity and dedication the like of which this country may never see again. God Save the Queen.

The Meaning of Luxury...For some it’s a pair of Jimmy Choos or a Louis Vuitton handbag. For others it’s a weekend shopping trip with friends or a home cooked meal lovingly prepared by your other half. For me, it’s got to be a brand new bathroom – my own sparkling clean private dreamland where I can enjoy a long, hot heavenly soak, away from the stresses of everyday life.

As time goes by though, your bath time pleasures will be spoiled when you notice the deteriorating condition of the silicone and the grout; black spots and mould will appear. And even when you put some serious elbow grease into scrubbing away at the grotty bits, you’ll get that ‘painting the Forth Bridge’ feeling - the work never ends, particularly if you’ve got more than one bathroom.

Now you might think that the only solution to this is a costly new bathroom every fi ve years or so, but you’d be wrong! We’ve discovered a local company called Total Bathroom Restoration, who can justly claim to put the gleam back into your bathroom at the fraction of the cost of a new one!

Since launching in March 2010, Ian Read, the owner of Total Bathroom Restoration has seen his business thrive to become one of the North West’s premier bathroom restoration companies. Ian believes that almost any bathroom can be rescued from the damage caused by unsightly mould and mildew that occurs naturally over time.

Ian, who used to present a home makeover show on the Discovery Home and Leisure TV channel, is passionate about the services his company offers. From his experience in property management he realised that most bathroom problems showed a consistent pattern; leaks,

grout failure, mouldy silicone, chipped bath trays and cloudy shower screens, and he subsequently embarked on a period of research and development with the aim of offering a complete bathroom restoration service to home owners.

And the result is a series of tried and tested methods, carried out by a skilled team that can restore any bathroom to its original state whilst causing you the minimum amount of disruption. Ian says “We’re genuinely passionate about what we do and we’re eager to show you exactly what can be achieved without replacing fi xtures and fi ttings”.

As well as traditional baths and tiles, Ian and

Bath Before

Bath After

Page 19: Widnes Local - May & June 2012

his team can tackle almost all bathroom related problems that some tradesmen would shy away from. These might include problem shower trays, shower cubicles and screens, natural stone tiles and more recently they have expanded their services to include other problem areas around the house such as kitchen worktops, sinks and tiles/grout.

Think ice-white silicone & grout, perfect tiles and a bathroom to be proud of; that’s the service that Total Bathroom Restoration can offer to you. If you don’t want to fork out thousands for a new bathroom but want to breathe a new lease of life into the one you have, just call Total Bathroom Restoration now on 0151 345 0362 or 0800 542 9984 and for more details visit their website at:www.totalbathroomrestoration.co.uk

This is what our latest customer had to say…Mr Murphy of Rainhill told Local Mags, “My sister saw my new bathroom makeover and said how she wishes hers was so clean because her shower cubicle was black with mould and the old silicone was coming away.“I decided to give my sister a bathroom makeover for Christmas, Ian was very friendly and informative, looked at the job and agreed a date and time. He and his team cleaned out all the old mouldy silicone and grout; they worked very professionally and expertly with all the correct tools and materials. Every single detail was scoured and by the end of the day the shower cubicle had been transformed and my sister and her husband were amazed!”

And here are some of ourother recent testimonials…“Ian and his team made a massive difference in the our shower room, I could not believe that it was the same bathroom.” Al Elliott, Widnes

Wonderful WindowsCurtains: where to startThe cheapest and most subtle option for hanging curtains is undoubtedly a plastic or metal track. Double tracks can be used to hang both nets and thicker curtains neatly, while triple tracks allow you to use flat panels, perhaps of different fabrics, which can be pulled back and forwards in different combinations depending on the effect you want or how much light you wish to allow in. The more decorative alternative is a curtain pole – perhaps in see-through acrylic, slender stainless steel or pale-painted wood – and with pretty finials on the ends. On narrow windows or dormers, portiere (or swing-arm) rods are an alternative to fixed poles, while for a modern effect you could use tension wire, fixed taut within the window opening.

Curtains: fabric & styleWhether you prefer minimal panels or swathes of fabric, it is best to take into account the architecture and size of the room, and of the windows, before opting for a particular curtain style. Grander curtains tend to suit larger, period rooms, while simple curtains are often best suited to modern properties. The way in which a curtain hangs is determined by its heading, usually created by a tape which is sewn onto the back of the curtain and pulled to form gentle gathers, smart pleats or a variety of other shapes. For a less formal look, however, there are plenty of alternatives. Tab- and tie-tops are often found on ready-made curtains, though they can be fiddly to draw. Curtains can also be hung from a deep hem which is simply slid over a pole, from large eyelets punched in the top (this looks great hung from a tension wire), from

clips (magnetic ones are easy to use) or even just from hooks. Curtains can be made from practically any fabric, depending on your budget. The heavier the fabric, the better it will hold a fold, though very heavy fabrics will be too bulky for smaller windows. Very light fabrics will tend to look floppy unless supported by a lining. Lining is, in fact, always a good idea, as it will not only help the fabric hang neatly, but also protect it from fading, dirt and condensation. Thermal linings help retain heat, and can be as effective as double glazing, while blackout lining also blocks out light and some noise.

BlindsOnce considered something of a poor cousin to curtains, blinds are increasingly fashionable, offering a clean-lined look that is sophisticated and laid-back yet still pleasingly tactile. What’s more,

HOMES

They keep in the warmth and keep out prying eyes, but window treatments are much more than a purely practical addition to a room, says Katherine Sorrell

Page 21: Widnes Local - May & June 2012

www.thelocalmags.co.uk | e: [email protected] | t: 01928 739607

they tend to be far cheaper, as they require much less fabric – just the size of the window opening, plus hems. There are different options to suit different styles of room, many of them easy to make yourself or inexpensive to buy off-the-shelf. A roller blind in a neutral colour will blend into the background in a modern, minimal space, or could be used in conjunction with ‘dress’ curtains (fixed either side of the window) in a more formal room. Roman blinds pull up in lovely soft folds that give an attractive drape without going over the top, while fabric roll-up blinds which, literally, roll up from the bottom and tie in position, show off their reverse, thus offering an attractive combination of two fabrics. When choosing fabrics, mid-weight, not-too-textured fabrics tend to be best for blinds, which need to roll or fold easily against themselves.

ShuttersThey may not be the obvious choice, and they are almost always

more expensive than blinds or simple curtains, but shutters are good-looking in an unfussy kind of way and suit both old and new properties. They’re also great for privacy. Depending on the configuration of your window, shutters can be made as a single pair, bi-fold, tri-fold or whatever will fit, either full-length, half-height (café style), or tier-on-tier, rectangular, tapering or arched in shape, and either set within the reveal or folding back against the wall. The plainest, period-type shutters have a timber frame and a solid centre panel – they can be painted any colour and complement a Georgian or Victorian home extremely well. American shutters have louvres that tilt up and down, offering privacy but also letting in light. Alternatively, for a highly contemporary effect, it’s possible to have shutters made from sleek aluminium or funky acrylic, which comes in a range of gorgeous colours.

This month’s selction of great

books...The Curiosity Bookshop in Runcornhave kindly supplied us with a listof fi ve great reads for this month...

Weird Things Customers Say In Bookshops So many people say “I’d love to run a little bookshop.” It can be a very satisfying job, helping customers to fi nd just the right book for the right occasion, and it certainly has its humorous side. Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops by Jen Campbell, (£7.99) is so accurate it had us in stitches. Example – “Do you have this children’s book, it’s supposed to be very good? It’s called Lionel Richie and the Wardrobe.” Or - “I’ve just discovered I’m David Cameron’s cousin. Is there a biography about me?” In Runcorn we have been asked “Do you sell razor blades?” “Sorry, no.” Customer, looking puzzled, “Oh, why not?”

Haunted Liverpool 17Tom Slemen’s much awaited Haunted Liverpool 17 (£6.99) has now arrived. As usual it is packed with strange happenings from the past in our local area. Many are afraid of clowns, but one small boy was actually scared to death by Tickle the Clown on New Brighton sea front. Then there was the book bought in Renshaw Street that brought bad luck wherever it went. The owner later found that it had been bound in human skin, and that the bump on the spine was a nipple! Then there are the ghostly children of Liverpool… And forty-one other mystifying tales to intrigue confuse the most sceptical of minds.

The Etymologicon This book, emerging from Mark Forsyth’s Inky Fool blog, details the strange connection between words. Ribald, witty, and erudite it swings from monks and monkeys to fi lm buffs and buffaloes, and even has an explanation for how the German pharmaceutical company Bayer, after producing a new chemical – diacetylmorphine – a supposedly non-addictive form of morphine – came to be known as Heroin! The “non-addictive” label however turned out to be a little misguided. Published by Icon Books, price £12.99.

The Book of RunestThe Book of Runes by Ralph Blum must have relevance even in today’s technical world as it is still considered the defi nitive guide to gaining insight into the present and the future. The book of interpretation is classic and the 25 rune stones, with their imprinted gold symbols, come complete with drawstring casting bag. As a tool for self-help, decision making and inner guidance, the ancient art of the runes is pivotal in illuminating the journey of self-discovery. Usual price £19.95. Special price £9.99 while stocks last.

Parker’s AstrologyThis beautifully produced and updated edition of Julia and Derek Parker’s classic guide to astrology will broaden anyone’s understanding of the subject, whether beginner or more experienced practitioner. It contains not only descriptions of sun signs, guidance on chart interpretations and location astrology, but an easy-to-follow ephemeris to the year 2020. Packed with information and including many full-colour illustrations the recommended retail price is £25, but is presently on offer at £9.99, while stocks last.

Don’t move, TWS Improve... ...your home instead! One of the first things that people notice about a house is the guttering, downpipes, soffits & fascias. Even with on a property that is looking a little tired, fitting new ones of these can make a massive difference. TWS Improve is your chosen local fitter for these.

The business was started in Warrington by Andy and Ian four years ago, after many years working for others. They realised that they could offer a great service and product to local customers.

Ian told me “They key thing for us is listening to what the customer wants before we even start any work. We take our time to explain the different options to the homeowner and I can honestly say that every single customer has been delighted with the job we’ve done”.

The philosophy at TWS is to maintain the lowest price possible for the customer whilst still suppling a high quality product. Andy and Ian both say that they would rather be constantly busy every week, earning an honest living than doing a couple of jobs a month with a big profit margin slapped on the bills. It’s a win-win situation for both the business and the customer that way.

A lot of people don’t realise that your guttering and fascias are extremely vital parts of your home. If your old ones become a bit worn, they can open the fabric of your home to the elements which can cause all manner of problems including damp and animal infestations. By fitting new products this will alleviate any concerns you may have and protect your home.

As a special offer for Local Magazine readers, TWS are promoting the supply and fit of all downpipes, all soffits, all gutters and all fascias for just £899! This is based on an average semi-detatched property. If your home is a little different then give them a call and they will be happy to give a quote whilst still honouring a great deal.

TWS Improve are also experts at new Windows and Conservatories, so if you are thinking of having other improvements done to your home, then certainly bear them in mind.

Why not give one of the team a call on one of the numbers listed in the advert opposite? They will happily discuss the different options for you and arrange a convenient time to come and give you a detailed quotation.

Keeping Pests at Bay the Natural Way...More and more people have become concerned about using chemicals in the garden, with some gardeners having used chemicals rarely, if at all, for years. Perhaps you are concerned about wildlife and conservation, or using pesticides on plants that children or pets might play near, or that you intend to eat.

Greener gardening is not difficult, it is just different. Many infuriating pests can thrive in greenhouses and conservatories, but there are now many ‘natural’ controls available in the form of predators and parasites, which can be purchased from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.com) and then

released indoors. These insects or mites do a great job of keeping common pests at bay, including whitefly, red spider mite and mealy bugs. There are also excellent controls available for slugs and for vine weevils, both of which can be used successfully outside too. Other outdoor pests which can be controlled include leather jackets and chafer grubs and there is even a control to send ants off in the other direction – wonderful if you like to lie on the lawn or enjoy meals in your garden without being nipped!

I garden organically and use biological controls regularly. If your conservatory is also a place where you relax or enjoy a drink or a meal, it is especially

Keeping Pests at Bay the Natural Way... Pippa Greenwoodby

important not to fill it with potentially harmful chemicals.

To use these controls you will need to make sure that your greenhouse or conservatory is not already packed full of chemical residues - otherwise they may kill the beneficial creatures you are introducing. For whitefly you need a tiny parasitic wasp called Encarsia and for red spider mite you need the predatory Phytoseiulus mite. Introduce these amongst infested plants and they will automatically search out the pests, soon getting their numbers under control without you having to lift a finger.

It may sound off-putting to release wasps or mites indoors

but these little creatures are tiny and will not bite or sting: they are only interested in the pests.

Biological controls are tricky for garden centres to stock, as living creatures won’t survive if left sitting on a warm shelf. Mail order is therefore the best way to buy generally, with your predators or parasites arriving in the post, along with strict instructions for storage and using before the use-by date. But don’t let this put you off: biological controls are excellent and used by professional growers.

To ensure success you must follow the instructions precisely and make sure you introduce the control when there are only

a few pests around. If the air is choked with whitefly it can be a bit too much of an uphill struggle for the tiny little wasps. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes self-perpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread. Now that’s what I call useful.

Husband and wife team, Jill and Ronnie McDonald founded Newlyn Healthcare back in 2004 with a strong determination to have their own business that would enable them to work for themselves and fit work around their new and growing family.

The business was originally based in Warrington but in 2007 the couple needed new premises to house their growing company. As luck would have it, they came across a unit in Albert Road in Widnes that was perfect for their needs. They found Widnes to be an ideal place for the next stage of their

business: a town with a thriving business community with great transport links.

The business went from strength to strength and they now offer products and services not just to the NHS, Nursing&Care Homes and Local Authorities but also to the general public also.

After just five years, the unit on Albert Road was becoming a little too small so Jill & Ronnie began looking once

more. After searching for a while, they came across something bigger than they were anticipating - an old car dealership! - but it was something that fitted their needs perfectly. The old Vauxhall dealership on Waterloo Road in Widnes was roomy enough for them to house their distribution warehouse, engineering workshop, offices and most importantly, their retail shop under one roof.

The new shop, which opened in January 2012 has excellent customer car parking (free of charge) and is within easy access from both Runcorn, Widnes and Warrington.

I recently went to visit Jill at the new shop and was amazed by her passion about her business. She explained that they source their products directly from the manufacturers and recently she has been able to drive down the costs of her wholesale products. Instead of keeping her prices the same and making more profit, she chose to pass the savings on to her customers. This now means that many of the products Newlyn offers are actually on sale at less than the RRP!

As well as offering products to buy including walkers, chairs, daily living aids, bathroom aids and incontinence consumables Newlyn also offer a number of items available for hire. These

include high-back chairs (which are ideal for post-operative support), rise and recline chairs, wheelchairs and profiling nursing beds. Whilst I was at the shop, a chap came in who was collecting a wheelchair that he had hired for just one day - he wanted to take his 93-year-old Mum out for the day and it was thanks to Newlyn’s service that he was able to do this.

One of the most popular products that Newlyn offer are shoes by Cosyfeet - they are actually the only local stockist for this brand. The shoes are a little more roomy than standard shoe sizes and are perfect for swollen feet, bunions, problem toes, orthotics and misshapen feet.

If you’re looking for any of the products that we have mentioned in this feature then please do get in touch the Newlyn, I know that they would be happy to help and offer advice.

If you’d like to visit their shop, they are open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9.30am to 1pm.

The Mini brand is expanding yet again – this time into the niche Coupe market. James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk) finds out more...

WHAT IT IS?Yet another Mini that’s been tweaked to keep the brand’s sales moving upwards. Sales for the maker are up 14 per cent year on year in a market down five per cent and the Coupe aims to add around 3,000 a year to that total. Classed as a ‘halo’ model, it’s not expected to be a volume seller, but a rival to the likes of the VW Scirocco and Audi TT. It has a lower roof, boot spoiler and only two seats.

WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?There are diesel and petrol options. As it’s the halo model, Mini won’t be offering One versions, only Cooper, Cooper S, SD, and John Cooper Works versions. We tried the SD and John Cooper Works. The latter is the range-topper offering 149mph top speed, 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and 39.8mpg. The diesel is a bit clattery but great to drive. It returns 65.7mpg, hits 134mph and passes 60mph in 7.7s.

WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?High. Standard equipment includes DAB radio, air-con, parking sensors, alloy wheels and sport stripes. But as with all Minis, it’s the personalisation – both via factory order and dealer- fitted accessories – which are plentiful. The famous TLC servicing pack is available for £249 and some 98 per cent of buyers are expected to take it up. We’d like to know who the two per cent are that don’t…

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?Enjoyable, but for taller drivers, extremely uncomfortable. The low roofline means you have to constantly crick your neck and the seats sent our legs to sleep within 10 minutes. It handles much like the hatch and in the dry is extremely chuckable, but in the wet it suffered with understeer. But none of that will stop fashion-hungry buyers snapping them up.

PRESS VERDICT...Auto Express said they thought ‘the powerful model has the makings of a machine that will take the brand to a group of drivers who feel that the standard hatch just isn’t tough enough’. While rivals Autocar said: ‘If you can live with the striking looks and driving appeal is a priority, it’s certainly worth considering.’

OUR VERDICT?The looks certainly grew on us during our test, but no amount of dynamics could take our attention away from the pain in our legs, not something anyone wants to feel. With only 3,000 expected to find homes, this low-volume model will be a fashion statement for style-conscious buyers.

D-Day... Commemorate or Celebrate?Wednesday 6th June is the

68th anniversary of D-Day, which means very few of the 350,000 Allied soldiers and sailors (and I don’t know how many airmen) who took part are still with us to commemorate one of the most momentous battles of World War II.

D-Day, it seems, hasn’t been celebrated as it should. The focus of Britain’s military commemoration has always been Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, when we mourn the dead of both world wars, as we should. But D-Day was a different battle and should be marked in a different way.

The courage of the 200,000 naval and 160,000 army personnel who set out for Normandy on that stormy Tuesday is worth celebrating for itself. They faced 59 German divisions, approaching 700,000 men, who had spent four years digging themselves in and converting every beach on the French seaboard into a death-trap of landmines, barbed wire, tank traps, machine guns and artillery. To the soldiers, Operation Neptune must have seemed like an enormous gamble on their life.

Of course, the odds weren’t as long as seemed. Those 59 German divisions were scattered over France, Belgium, and the Netherlands and the prolonged

bombing of their communication lines made rallying quickly impossible. German high command was expecting an invasion to be launched in the obvious place, the Pas de Calais. A huge army remained there long after it was clear that the Normandy landings were no mere diversion. Many of the thin cordons of troops along the Norman coast were conscripted Poles and Russians, never trusted by the Germans (rightly, as most of them deserted quickly and many Poles turned up at Arnhem on the Allied side). The German forces had been rendered negligible by a long campaign of attrition and thanks to Hitler’s paranoia and indecision, command of the ground forces was divided and virtually paralysed.

For their part, the Allied commanders enjoyed overwhelming air and naval superiority. They had gained valuable experience of amphibious operations in North Africa and Italy, and had dedicated two years to planning and reconnaissance. They had the attacker’s advantage, concentrating their armies, while forcing the defenders to disperse theirs. Eisenhower, Montgomery and the rest had good reason to feel nervous, but confident.

It can’t have seemed like that to the men in the landing craft,

though. Their prospects of victory as an army might have been better than fair, but so were their personal prospects of injury or death.

In the event, the mainly British, American, and Canadian invaders fared surprisingly well. The next two months were an arduous slogging match, but “only” 4,400 Allied lives were claimed out of 150,000 – 4,400 too many, but at 3%, rather better than the Somme. Indeed to a soldier of the Red Army, with memories of Stalingrad and Kharkov (the largest tank-battle in history), D-Day must have seemed not much more than a skirmish.

But D-Day is important for more than just its scale and what it achieved towards the downfall of Nazi Germany. D-Day should stand as a beacon for democracy against totalitarianism. Totalitarian regimes may appear strong, but they are hollow. Willing confederations of free men and women uniting their energy, intelligence and courage towards a common goal are always stronger than a people that only obey orders. Tuesday 6th June 1944 proved that, and we should celebrate the day not with the wreaths and silences of Remembrance Sunday but with fireworks and a joyous chorale.

We could call it Democracy Day.

D-DAY

When one of our advertisers, Jeff Chesters of JDC Ceramics and Bathrooms, invited me to come and have a look at his new showroom so that I could take some photos for a new advert design, I was wondering what could be different as they only moved into their last showroom about 12 months ago.

Well, when I walked through the door I could see instantly why new photos were necessary: the place was completely different! Just meters away from their last place but at least four times bigger, JDC’s new showroom is a showstopper to say the least! The local family-run business has now opened the doors to the showroom in Moor Lane Business Centre, Widnes after a stunning £30,000 fit out and they are absolutely delighted with the response from customers.

Jeff who runs the business with his wife, Jennie, told me that “the new showroom is much bigger than what we previously had and it really enables us to showcase the huge variety of bathroom suites and products that we offer to our customers.

“We now feature 10 fully tiled bathroom bays, dozens of new tile ranges, wet rooms, bathroom furniture, showers, bathroom mirrors, lighting and natural stone displays.”

It’s easy to understand why JDC are extremely proud to supply and fit bathroom suites and products from many top quality suppliers and some of our ranges you can only get exclusively from them as no other local firms have them and they are not available to buy online.

“When the opportunity arose to invest in this new showroom we jumped at the chance. We currently have the best range of bathrooms and products that we’ve ever had and we really needed somewhere to show them off properly!” Jeff told me.

Whilst I was visiting, Jeff took the time out to explain to me exactly what JDC offer their customers when they are interested in a having new bathroom. Initially, they have a chat with the customer to see what they’d really like to achieve. JDC will then produce a

design based on the customers’ desires which include a full breakdown of costs. This enables you to see exactly where your money is going and gives you the opportunity to make amendments until you are 100% satisfied with your new bathroom.

When it comes to the fitting of your new bathroom, JDC understand that having any work done in the house can be disruptive and aim to keep any disruption to an absolute minimum. After clearing out your exisiting bathroom and taking away any rubbish, JDC fit the new suite and tiles, leaving you to enjoy your spotless new bathroom.

In addition to offering a full supply and fit service to the general public, JDC also offer local tradesmen discount deals on their products including adhesives, tiles, tools, grouts, trims and silicones.

Countless people in the local area have had their bathrooms transformed by JDC since it first started trading 10 years ago and it is through these satisfied customers that they have gained a well-deserved reputation for being one of the very best bathroom companies around.

With this beautiful new showroom to display their bathrooms, choosing JDC makes perfect sense.

The new showroom is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and from 8.30am to 3pm on Fridays. For any further information about JDC, call 0151 257 8671 or visit www.jdcceramics.co.uk

Life With LauraOur regular student columnist fills us in on what she’s been up to this month...

Hello everyone. It feels like forever since I last wrote to you all, so I hope you have all been well.

These past few weeks have been quite eventful for me. We travelled to Wales for one weekend to celebrate my Grandparents’ fiftieth anniversary, and thankfully, the weather remained glorious for the entirety of our stay. We stayed in a farmhouse with seven bedrooms in Llangollen, and brought along most of the family. One of my favourite pastimes is exploring new places, especially in woodland and forests, and while we were in the valley I spent most of my time in the mountains. Fortunately, there was no internet access, so I wasn’t distracted by my usual pastimes. All in all, it was a good weekend, and I look forward to doing it again!

However, we’re now at a time that most students dread. Of course, I’m talking about the exam period – the Easter holidays mark the start of the exam period, and it’s also the time when we start

rushing around, trying to hand in any work and working out what revision lessons we can attend without clashing with other sessions. All in all, the experience can be rather stressful if you don’t handle it effectively. Getting started early is absolutely essential, and you’re more likely to suffer the consequences if you don’t! But you don’t need me to tell you that. I sincerely hope we all do well this year, so that we can all have a fantastic summer!

Like most students during the gap between college and further education, I’m hoping to go on holiday this July or August with some friends. Last year I travelled to Wales with some friends and that was quite exciting; however, this year I’m hoping to take a step further and travel abroad. Europe has always fascinated me, and I have some friends in Holland who I’m hoping to stay with. I’ll be 18 then, and I’m looking forward to becoming a little more independent in my travels – hopefully I can learn a lot through my experiences. I do intend to move out of

England in the future so getting as much time in other countries as possible is going to help me a lot in making a final decision about where I actually want to end up, so to speak, so I hope to make this summer a very fulfilling one!

To finalise this edition I’d like to talk about the recent surge of interest in the Titanic and the enormity of the impact of her tragic sinking 100 years ago. I’m actually very proud that so many people have shown so much empathy and taken an interest into something that was so historically impacting, despite the event being adapted into a drama. It’s always interesting when new facts and figures emerge that can help historians and scientists piece together all of the information available to them, and I personally find it amazing when new evidence is revealed that can help to solve the great mysteries of our time, and answer the simple question: why did it happen?

So I do hope you are all well and I’ll see you in the next edition!

INGREDIENTS•275g new potatoes

•450g asparagus

•5 large eggs

•200g buffalo mozzarella

•50g Parmesan, grated

•2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley

•2 tbsp olive oil

•Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper WHAT TO DO

•Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water.

• Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece

about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time.

•Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato.

•Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears.

•Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over

a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned.

•Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up.

•Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm.

•Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

Bronzed GoddessA great tan is essential for summer. We all know however that spending hours soaking up the sun’s rays is a definite no-no. It’s no surprise then that more and more of us are opting for the safe option and getting a golden glow courtesy of one of the many ‘at home’ fake tanners that are on the market.

It’s not always easy to achieve the results you’d hoped for though - most people have an ‘orange disaster’ tale to tell. That’s why we’ve compiled a definitive guide to fake tanning. It’s just in time to help you look beach-ready and gorgeous and it goes a long way to prove that with careful preparation, the right products and an hour of your time, you can successfully be transformed into a bronzed goddess.

Step One - The right productIf you’re new to self-tanning or have pale skin, it’s a good idea to start with a gradual tanning product. The result is fairly subtle which means it’s forgiving of beginners’ mistakes and it also allows you to achieve the depth of colour you want gradually.

Step Two - PlanningConsider where you will be applying your tan. The bathroom is the obvious choice, but not necessarily the best. Ideally you need a fair amount of space, a full length mirror and lots of natural light. Allow plenty of time and don’t be tempted to rush.

Step Three - ExfoliateThe most important stage of the process is preparation. Your skin is the canvas on which the fake

tan product will be applied and it needs to be as even and smooth as possible.

Exfoliation is integral for establishing the right base. It’s best done the night before, as it allows the skin to settle overnight. If you’re going to wax your legs, then make sure you allow 24 hours between waxing and tanning to avoid dark dots that emerge as a result of the product building up in open follicles. Thoroughly removing dead skin cells will allow for an even base on which to apply the tan.

Step Four - MoisturiseMoisturising is essential. Be incredibly generous with your moisturiser and ensure that it’s fragrance and colour free, as some varieties can affect the result of the tan. Pay particular

attention to troublesome areas. Knees, ankles, elbows and wrists are generally drier and will soak up the tanning product if not properly moisturized, resulting in a patchy finish.

Step Five - ApplyWhen applying the tan it’s a good idea to wear latex gloves. Work quickly but carefully, starting with your feet and methodically covering every inch of your skin evenly. Don’t forget to include your armpits, toes and backs of your ankles.

Step Six - Don’t forget handsOnce you have tanned your entire body, remove your gloves and thoroughly moisturise your hands, working the cream into nails, knuckles and wrists. Apply a dot of fake tan to the back of one hand and rub it against the other, working up past the wrists.

Step Seven - Leave to dryDrying times vary from product to

product - mousses tend to work faster than creams or lotions. Whichever you use, it’s imperative that you allow it to dry on the skin fully. Speed up the process with a cool blast of air from your hairdryer. When you do dress, choose loose fitting clothes and keep away from water for at least six hours.
