Well done to Benjamin Jeyasingham (12T1) who applied for the Kings College London Neurosurgical Conference Student Blog Competition

(found in the October KCL Medical Monthly newsletter). Benjamin wrote a 700 word blog about Neurosurgery and Emergency. His entry was

successful and he was invited to attend the KCL Neurosurgical Conference on the 10th November. We look forward to hearing about

    Benjamin’s experiences at the conference.

The workshop was based on applying Brechtian Methodologies to one of the set texts ‘Woyzeck’ by Buchner. The students were fully engaged throughout and the workshop leader was so impressed with the quality of work produced, he commented that is was more like Degree standard than A-Level, which is a real credit to the students.

    More details to follow….

Competition results:The famous VOCABEXPRESS League of Champions got every year

group involved! Students competed to learn French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Portuguese, and many other languages.

Twyford came 17th overall, against schools from all over the world!

  • During half term, a group of twenty Year 13 Physics students were given the amazing opportunity to go on a brief trip to Switzerland, during which we visited the CERN project, and nearby Geneva. For those who aren’t familiar with CERN, it is the European Organization for Nuclear Research where physicists and engineers explore the fundamental basics of the universe. Since its foundation in 1954, this has involved many impressive developments, from producing antiatoms and discovering pentaquarks, to accelerating particles to almost the speed of light, and colliding protons so that energy is converted into mass (creating new particles) to mimic the Big Bang. The 22 member states, and over 2500 physicists and engineers who work at CERN are continually finding new projects, stretching the boundaries of what is considered possible, and it is very exciting to think that there will always be more to be discovered, and that one day perhaps the future physicists and engineers from Twyford may have a part in it.

We took a flight to Geneva where we then had a couple of hours exploring the city before going to our youth hostel in Nyon. We spent the rest of our day in this small town by the Lake Geneva. The next day we visited CERN itself, where we walked around their museum and attended a short talk, before beginning our tour of the site itself. First, we looked at some equipment from the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) where our tour guide described the process of accelerating the particles through an entertaining variety of similes, such as comparing the magnetic fields guiding the protons to a sheepdog herding sheep! I was continually astounded by the magnitude of what went on, from the infinitesimal size of the protons (0.85x10-15m radius) which travelled at 99.9999% of the speed of light (3.0x108ms-1), to the -271.3°C temperature of the magnets (colder than space) which changed polarity at a rapid rate. We were then taken across the border to France to see the CERN Control Centre. Here we were given a talk explaining the physics of what they do, using a large touchscreen that turned out to be one of the first ever touchscreens created, and could turn see-through to become a window looking into the office from which everything is controlled...not what you expect to find within a small lecture room! Above the LHC control desk lay the most accurate record of when their scientific developments took place, in the form of a row of empty champagne bottles with post-its on for every record broken! We then ate lunch in the cafeteria surrounded by all the researchers and walked around another CERN museum, before returning to Geneva for free time. Students enjoyed visiting many great landmarks within the city, from the UN Headquarters to botanical gardens and a 140m high water fountain (Jet d’Eau).

I would like to say a massive thank you from all of us to Mr Jones, Dr Lawson and Dr Sanghera for organising the trip, truly inspiring and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone else who has the opportunity to go! Naomi-Ruth Bookless (Year 13)

  • Interested in a Career in Electronic Engineering Post 18?Electronic Engineering at Royal Holloway - Placing an emphasis on creativity being at the heart of all great engineering inventions, this is an exciting and inspirational time to study Electronic Engineering at Royal

Holloway. Now based in the impressive new Shilling building with fantastic facilities, such as a roof-top lab with solar panels and a wind turbine, fabrication lab with laser cutters, 3D printers, PCB milling machine, robotics

table and brand new computer lab, Electronic Engineering at Royal Holloway is going from strength to strength. Please come and visit us at one of four Taster Days running this year:

    21st November, 6th February, 20th March and 22nd May

Year 10 Work Experience Once WEX placements have been secured, students need to return their WEX form to

reception. If you need any additional support with WEX placements or have any

    enquires please email: [email protected]

    Heathrow Jobs & Careers Fair Thursday 28 February 2019 - 3:30 to 7pm

Sofitel London Heathrow, Terminal 5Open to students in Year 10-13

Students will get the chance to meet a selection of the employers based at Heathrow and explore the

opportunities available. The students will be able to gain face-to-face interaction with whomever they may be interested in, whilst also gaining awareness of the qualifications they will need to get there. Apprentices

and managers also share their career journeys and have the latest information about vacancies, placements &

    skills available at the Airport.

Apprenticeship Post 16 or 18?Year 11 & 13 students have had a very inspiring assembly on

Apprenticeships by Derrick Otchere from ASK(Apprenticeship Support & Knowledge for schools). Derrick will be delivering an assembly to Year 10 & 12 in the New Year. In February, Derrick will also be leading an afternoon workshop to support students in Y10-13 interested in this

route with application forms and interview skills (see Miss Adams if you would like to be involved in this).

  • Music

On Wednesday 14th November, we held the Popular Music Competition at

Twyford. We saw ten performances as well as a performance from Rosie Trentham

(who was last years PMC winner). The standard of performance was very

high - well done to all students who performed. The judges had a difficult

decision but eventually decided on the winner and runner up, a HUGE

    congratulations to the following students:

Winners: ‘Ric’ (Gregory Smith, Ed Higgins,

    Marlon Reynier, Lucien Ismael)

    Runner Up: ‘Kunle B’(Kunle Babinson)

Thank you to our guest judges -Pete Whittard and La Lune, the Tech Team, Music College and Mr Ahira for organising

the PMC. (Photos by Stefan Weil)

  • Enterprise Day

Well done to York, Canterbury and Truro for a successful Enterprise day on Friday 2nd November. Events included a

cake sale at break and a teacher quiz at lunch (with the losing teacher receiving a pie in their face!).

Each House raised the following amounts: York (Breast cancer UK) £242.55

Canterbury (Meadow House Hospice) £426.49 Truro (The Cinnamon Trust) £335.82

    Total - £1004.86

Thank you to the Heads of House, House Captains andEnterprise Captains, as well as the students and teachers

who were involved in the day and to those who made donations. The money raised will be given to our chosen

    house charities.

On Friday 2nd November, Year 12 had their first RE Conference of the year. It was a hugely enjoyable event, with each form tasked

with creating an argument on the matter of immigration by responding to data, collecting information from sources and

challenging the ideas of one another. These arguments were then presented before a panel of 'judges' in contention with an

opposing forms argument. The RE conference gave those with an affinity for public speaking an opportunity to get involved in a

practice which is not as readily available in an orthodox classroom setting. Following the presentation of arguments, students in the audience had the opportunity to put forward challenges to the

speakers arguments giving them a chance to defend their standpoint. The event was enjoyed by all, and I am really looking

forward to the second instalment in June. Markos Khir 12C
