Are you looking for more mentoring opportunities? WIB has three different ways members can participate in mentoring activities:

Mentors, Advisors, and Peers (MAPs) groups, which are informal groups of members who meet regularly to discuss career-

related topics; MAPs-University groups, which are groups of young students at local universities that meet regularly and host

speakers; and our new 1:1 Mentoring program, where WIB members are matched together for more individual mentoring. Tell

us how you want to get involved by filling out this survey. For more information, email [email protected].

Emory MAPs-U Group Needs Volunteers

Mentors Advisors Peers (MAP)s-University groups have regular monthly meetings on the Emory campus that involve invited

speakers and discussions on various career-related topics. The Emory MAPs-U group is looking for a graduate student and a

post-doc to volunteer as group leaders. With help from the MAPs Chair, the group leader(s) will be responsible for organizing

regular meetings and inviting speakers. The group leader(s) will also report to the MAPs Chair. Being group leader allows you a

great opportunity to network and will better prepare you for your future career. Email [email protected] and tell us

WIB-Austin Area Presents: “Bridging Academics and Industry in Central Texas”

Innovation is vital to the progress of biotechnology development and commercialization. University resources enable novel

research and foster the development of technology in fields ranging from big data to medical sciences; in order to bring these

innovations to the market, a number of industry resources are required to enable product accessibility. In this February 29,

2015, event, panelists from academia and industry will join us to discuss available technologies and resources in Central Texas

that may foster collaborations and partnerships for future product development and implementation. Each of our invited speakers

will have 3-5 minutes to share something great and interesting they have to offer the Austin biotech community. Following this

30-45 minute session, attendees will have an opportunity to network with featured panelists while enjoying light refreshments.

Speed Networking and Mentoring with Young Women In Bio

On January 23, 2016, the WIB-Chicago Young Women In Bio Committee hosted a networking and mentoring event. Over 75

girls, ranging in ages from 10 to 18 years old, had an opportunity to speak with women who have careers in the life sciences.

Twelve mentors volunteered and provided guidance on education and insight on their careers. The mentors were research

scientists in the academic field and both start-up and large health science companies. In addition, the mentors had experience

in consulting, entrepreneurship, biosimilar development finance and patent law. The “speed networking” format of the event

allowed the girls to begin learning the life-long skill of networking, and to having the opportunity to meet successful professional

women of various ethnicities at different stages of their careers. The event was sponsored by Marshall Gerstein & Borun LLP. In

attendance were member of Girls 4 Science (G4S), a nonprofit organization dedicated to exposing girls in Chicago to science,

technology, engineering and math. - Sharon M. Sintich, Chair, WIB-Chicago Young Women In Bio
