ABOUT US4

Page 5: Wia prospectus 2015 16

It can be daunting for a student starting a new school, but we pride ourselves on making this transition as smooth as possible.

During the last term of Year 6, key staff will visit all future students at their primary school to discuss the exciting opportunities that await them. We also discuss their needs with existing teachers to ensure that the best provision can be made for our incoming students.

In July, Year 6 students spend a taster day at the Academy where they meet their new tutor and classmates in preparation for their start in September.

During the summer holidays, the Academy offers a ‘Summer School’ specifically for new Year 7 students to help them further develop new friendships and to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings.

By the time September arrives they will already feel comfortable in their new surroundings.

BOUNDLESS OPPORTUNITIES

Overseas Trips Every year students are given the opportunity to learn and gain new experiences

abroad. The annual Watersports trip takes place during the May half term for Year 9 and 10 students; a ski trip goes once a year to either France or Italy for all year

groups; there is a week-long trip to the Black Forest in Germany for years 8, 9 and 10; and there are also other regular subject-related trips that students benefit from.

Extra-curricular activities From Creative Writing Club to our award-winning French Drama Club, there really is something for everyone including some groups specifically for Year 7 students. Our Arts Learning Area is particularly active with choirs, jazz groups, bands and orchestras.

My favourite thing about the Academy is the extra-curricular clubs like choir, instrumental lessons and after-school sports activities. Here you can meet new people, try new things and explore different ways to learn” Emma – Year 9

Academic Support and GuidanceAt the end of Year 7, each tutor group has a change of tutor who will then remain

with their group until the end of Year 11 so that continuity, confidence and trusting relationships can be developed. The Head of Year has overall responsibility and

holds regular Year meetings and assemblies.

Students are given regular opportunities to review their academic performance and to set personal targets. The Academy also organises student monitoring and

mentoring programmes when applicable.

Online learning support - VLEThe Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is available to all students and can be accessed from any device with Internet access.  Students can find activities, revision materials, subject guidance and a whole range of other useful information to help them with their studies.

SportThe Sports Village at Winterbourne International Academy has an enviable provision of facilities. As well as an All-Weather Pitch, the Village has a large sports hall with cricket nets, sports pitches and

an indoor swimming pool.

The Academy has strong links with both Bristol football clubs and Bristol Rugby and thanks to the hard work of our students and teachers, our sports teams are regularly in the finals of regional and

national competitions. Our swimming pool received a score of 97% in a recent RLSS inspection – one of the highest in the region. We are very proud of our students’ achievements in sport and have recently seen some of them as Olympic Torch bearers, international rugby players, national

badminton players and athletes.

The Arts CentreThe Arts Centre is a multi-purpose venue that brings the education of students to life with a mixed programme of events from Classical Music to Rock Concerts, Pantomime to Shakespeare. The Arts Centre caters for all people of all ages.

Students get involved in both the production and creative side of performances such as the Little Shop of Horrors, Christmas Concert, and UploadLive.

MusicWe are not only fully equipped with an impressive range of instruments and high tech IT

equipment, but the department has dedicated music practice rooms, use of the Arts Centre for performances, and our own digital record label ‘Ridings Recordings’.

Every year we run a very popular Year 9 Modern Foreign Languages Karaoke competition where groups sing popular songs in German, French, and Spanish.

Mexican LinksEvery two years students studying Spanish raise funds to visit and support a secondary school in Mexico. In 2013 they also visited a primary school in the village of Mocochá where our students helped rebuild their playground with new equipment.

SIMS Learning GatewayParents can log into the ‘SIMS Learning Gateway’ website and access information online about their child. This includes live attendance data, assessment data and behaviour information. This

allows parents to keep a close eye on their child’s progress at the Academy throughout the year.

InclusionWinterbourne International Academy is committed to the principle of inclusion, and seeks to provide a high quality education for all students, whatever their needs, in line with the Every Child Matters agenda. The Academy seeks to provide equal opportunities for all learners irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, impairment, educational attainment or background.

We aim to be a dyslexia-friendly environment and take steps to ensure the inclusion of students with a range of learning difficulties.

Gifted and Talented programmeUsing a range of student data and teacher recommendations, we identify incoming students who would benefit from extra academic challenges. Our Gifted and Talented Programme encourages

these students to achieve their full potential via a programme of extension and enrichment activities in all curriculum areas.

AboutEvery two years a group of Winterbourne students participate in a charity-driven trip to Mexico, fundraised through events such as bag packing, car washes and cake sales. They teach English to young pupils in Mexican village schools, and help fund projects such as building a school play park.

The trip also allows the students to practise their Spanish, grasp the experience of a new culture, and gain valuable skills including teamwork and commitment. The students also stayed with Mexican families, allowing them to become independent, and truly gain first-hand knowledge about this area of the world.

Hannah says“The trip allowed us to experience new and different cultures. A lot of preparation was required, and staying with the families gave us plenty of opportunities to practise our Spanish”

CURRICULUMThe curriculum at the Academy is designed to deliver a broad and balanced range of subjects. Unique to South Gloucestershire, the Academy’s curriculum for years 7 to 11 is modelled around the International Baccalaureate Middle Years programme which has been globally proven to enhance attainment levels.

From Years 10-11, students will undertake courses leading to GCSEs and other external qualifications.

We are also fortunate enough to have two contrasting subject specialisms at the Academy, Modern Foreign Languages and Mathematics, allowing our students to experience some of the best facilities and teaching provision for these subject areas.

MYP THE MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMMEWhat is The Middle Years Programme?

Common themes among subjects:

ORGANISATION OF TEACHING GROUPS

We use Mixed-ability, Banding and Setting in order to appropriately challenge students at the correct level throughout their time in the Academy.

‘Banding’ puts students into broad ability groups. ‘Setting’ allocates students a ‘set’ based directly on their ability within each particular Learning Area.

In Year 7, most subjects are taught in Mixed-ability classes, with support groups for Literacy and Numeracy. In Maths, Science and Languages a Banding system is introduced from the start of Term 2.

In Year 8, Setting is introduced in Maths, Languages and PE and Banding is used in Humanities subjects. All other subjects remain as Mixed-ability classes.

During Years 9, 10 and 11, Mathematics and Languages continue to use Setting. Science introduces a banding system, with the most able students studying three separate sciences and other students studying Extended Science or BTEC Science.

AboutJess Hopton has played competitive Badminton since the age of 11. Whilst studying at Winterbourne International Academy, Jess has represented England around 30 times and was honoured to become an Olympic torch bearer for London 2012. She has played tournaments across the world including Denmark, France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Malaysia at the World Juniors.

Jess balances the sport with homework by sticking to a weekly planner, and agrees this is the key to organisation. The Academy has encouraged and supported her through every step of the way by discussing plans of how to complete work to a high standard within a limited time frame. Last year we were pleased to see Jess achieve 9 A’s at GCSE including two A* - she is currently studying at Winterbourne Sixth Form for her A-Levels.

Jess says“The Academy has been brilliant with helping me get the right balance between education and my sport. Both are very important to me so a balance has been key throughout my senior school life.”
