PRESIDENT’S UPDATE
Hello Everyone,
Here we are again, starting our fall events. It is wonderful that we
will be able to meet in person. Unless we have circumstances
beyond our control.
On September 13th we’ll be having our Executive Board meeting
in Sparta at the Monroe County Assembly Room located at 112
South Court Street (use Oak Street entrance) from 1-2. Monroe
County guidelines recommend that masks are worn inside.
Remember, everyone is invited to come to this planning
meeting. We may have last minute planning for our Fall West
District meeting. This Fall meeting is coming up fast, October
4th. The registration form is in this newsletter.
There will be 5 of us going to the State Conference in
September. It is always a special time to see everyone that we
have met over the years. We always learn a lot and bring
information back to you.
We also have to plan our Monroe County Fall Fest!!
Take care! Yes, fall is in the air.

BOOKWORM UPDATE
Our books arrived Thursday, August 19th for the 2021-2022 school year. I counted them out and realized we were short 100 books for one of this year’s picks. I also had a box of books that weren’t in our reading list. So there was a little glitch but it’s in the process of being corrected.
I received word from Lisa Hines, Child and Family Education Manager for the Sparta and Tomah Head Start programs that we will not be allowed to read in person this year at those two sites.
I will be contacting Ahuco Head Start Coordinator, Tori Moake to see what their protocol will be.
I will deliver the books I have to all three sites this week. I will also be reminding staff of how to download the activity sheets to use with the books.
Earlier this year Lisa Hines asked if we might be able to get books to read to their 2-3 year old students at the Sparta site. Our Executive Board allotted $200 for me to work with Scholastic and see what I could come up with.
I formed a “Literacy Partnership” between our Monroe County HCE and Scholastic. I could then go on-line and view the books they had for that age group. It was a fun adventure.
I chose the books on different subjects and ordered them keeping within the budget. Those books arrived about a month ago. They will be delivered to the Sparta site along with the other books.
I have received some funding from Oakdale Electric and the Andres Grant. I am waiting to hear from the Thomas Earl Trust and Theisen’s in Sparta.
Thank you for continuing to support this literacy project.

Betty Jane Weber, 83, of Sparta, passed away July 22, 2021 at
Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta. She was a member of the Westside
HCE Club. Betty’s family moved to Germany when she was a young
child. Later she returned to her grandparents home on their farm in
St. Mary’s Ridge. She graduated from Cashton High School and
retired to Sparta when the farm was sold.
Betty shared many stories of her travels and
activities with our members. We will miss her smile
and quick wit.

WESTSIDE CLUB NEWS
Melanie Arena and
Margaret Rowan ,
teacher and student . . . .
42 years later
Members and their families attended a summer picnic at the home of Jim and Bernie Arena on Sunday, August 15th. Sunshine greeted everyone as they arrived with their potluck treats.
The luncheon included Bernie Arena’s venison barbecue served on Margaret Rowan’s blue ribbon rolls.
Dorothy Prell’s crisp and colorful lettuce salad brought a sparkle to the buffet. Her son Tim helped get things delivered and set up.
A tasty fruit salad brought by Joan Koltermann brought a touch of sweetness to the table.
Minty and chocolate ice-creams were April Anderson’s perfect desserts for the gathering.
Cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, cherries, coleslaw, homemade lemonade and coffee were also on the menu. Yum!
Those attending were Dorothy Prell, Herb and Margaret Rowan, Jim and Bernie Arena, Gerald and Joan Koltermann, April Anderson, Cory Deere and Melanie Arena.
Congratulations to Herb and Margaret Rowan and to Gerald and Joan Koltermann. Both couples are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversaries.

Self-care isn't selfish, it's essential. No-one's perfect. But so often we compare our insides to other people's outsides. This month we're encouraging everyone to be kinder to themselves (as well as others), especially when things go wrong. Self-care increases our resilience and helps us get more out of life. It also helps us accept others as they are too. Action for Happiness website
