Wi-Fi Alliance Convergence Initiatives
Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ Makes it Wi-Fi
VoIP Phenomenon
• According to Skype:
“Skype's 309 million registered users have made more than 100 billion minutes worth of free Skype-to-Skype calls”
• VoIP is penetrating both the home and the enterprise
17Wi-Fi Alliance FMCA June 2008
• Wi-Fi is a VoIP enabler. In supporting VoIP, Wi-Fi– Enables wireless connectivity– Enables many additional applications and product features
beyond VoIP– Supports carrier and enterprise service strategies– Allows users to do more with fewer devices
Wi-Fi is now a must-have in all the coolest handsets and consumer electronics
18Wi-Fi Alliance FMCA June 2008
Wi-Fi CERTIFIED handsets deliver security protection and the best user experience
• 172 handsets have been Wi-Fi CERTIFIED to date
• Programs test interoperability and security protocols
• Optional tests to optimize • Optional tests to optimize battery life, support multimedia applications
• Optional Wi-Fi and cellular radio coexistence mapping (with CTIA®)
19Wi-Fi Alliance FMCA June 2008
Introducing: Voice Personal Certification
• The first performance certification from Wi-Fi Alliance, Voice-Personal marks an important evolution in Wi-Fi CERTIFIED testing
• The test network taxes the network with simulated traffic streams– Four simulated voice calls– Simulated video and data traffic– Simulated video and data traffic
• Voice-Personal performance criteria include:– Packet loss of less than 1% with
no burst losses– Latency of less than 50 milliseconds– Maximum jitter of less than 50
milliseconds.
20Wi-Fi Alliance FMCA June 2008
As the market for voice-capable Wi-Fi devices grows, our programs will expand
• Voice Personal certifications are foundational for future programs
• Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Voice - Enterprise: planned for 2009– This program will add to the Voice – This program will add to the Voice
Personal performance testing to include enterprise-grade roaming and security
• WMM Admission Control – 2009– help ensure bandwidth availability for
QoS sensitive applications

Wi-Fi Alliance collaborates to ensure the best user experience with convergence products & services
• Collaboration to articulate market requirements
• Address inter-technology issues (e.g. handoff)
• Develop testing programs
22Wi-Fi Alliance FMCA June 2008
• Develop testing programs (CTIA)
Wi-Fi/Mobile Convergence Work Areas: CWG-RF
• This is our joint program with CTIA
• Provides standardized performance characterization

1. Transmit power2. Receive sensitivity3. Coexistence (desense)
Next-generation Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 802.11n draft 2.0
• This program launched in June 2007
• A Wi-Fi signal that blankets the whole home
• Video and audio streams move from device to device
24Wi-Fi Alliance FMCA June 2008
move from device to device on a high-throughput link
• Back up large files in a snap• First handsets with 802.11n
expected to enter the market soon
325 products are now Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 802.11n draft 2.0
50% also support Wi-Fi Protected Setup50% also support Wi-Fi Protected Setup38 are enterprise-grade networking products
100% support WMM Quality of Service
