Purpose The purpose of the Work Instruction is to provide clear instructions to the Wheels Department, how to use the Co-ordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) to measure bearing internal an external diameters, as part of the quality process designed to isolate bearing rings which are not within the size tolerance specified.

Scope This Work Instruction is a step by step guide to using the Mitutoyo Co-ordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) located in the Wheels Department Quality Assurance Room. This is used in the training and instruction of members of staff who are required to use this equipment.

Requirements Members of the Wheels Department must be competent in the use of the CMM prior to being allocated to regularly performing this quality check. Staff must be assessed against, and be proficient in the use of the CMM according to the process defined in this Work Instruction. Competence in this use of the CMM should be checked every two years to confirm continuing competence. A measurement task should be set by the assessor, and should have printed results that can be verified by the assessor as evidence of competence. N.B. The plastic non-slip mat is to be replaced every 12 months with an approved mat.

Procedure Visually check that the machine is in calibration and is acceptable to operate. The printer is loaded with paper and the ink levels are okay. Make sure the non-slip plastic bed is firmly secured and screwed down on to the granite bed of the machine. Turn on the CMM Computer Printer Allow time for the computer screen to warm up. Make sure that all three ‘Axis-lock Switches’ on the right hand Column of the CMM is switched to the Right. This locks each of the three Axis of the Probe assembly in place.

Left is lock, Right is unlock.

• SWITCH-X locks the Left/Right X-Axis

• SWITCH-Y lock the Back/Forward Y-Axis

• SWITCH-Z locks the Probe Up/Down Z-Axis

On the computer screen should be highlighted 3D-GEOPAK... Press Enter.

Screen showing --------- Showing Con Fig. Yes – No. need Yes. Press Enter.

Screen Showing -------- Define Probe Matrix. 1-5-0 Press Enter. Press Enter again.
