Greetings fellow Lions I would like to congratulate the Lions voted in at our Convention who will be leading our District for the next three years - James Whyte, D G Elect and Kate, Graeme Wilson 1 st VDG Elect and Chanel and Liz Murray, 2 nd VDG Elect and Bruce. Enjoy the journey that you are now on. The last two weekends have seen Elisabeth and I at two other District Conventions, 202E in Christchurch and 202J in Dunedin. Both were very good weekends and always interesting to see how other Districts serve their communities. We had the privilege of meeting and talking with Robert ( Bob ) Corlew, the International 2 nd VP and his wife Dianne. He was voted in at the World Convention we attended in Toronto and will lead our Lions organisation in the centennial year 2017 -18. This weekend, 28 th March we are looking forward to attending the 50 th celebration of the Tuatapere Club. Anzac weekend in April will see us at the Multiple District Convention in Napier. I would like to again remind Clubs about the Lions Safety Action Plan found on page 9 of the directory. Do nominate someone as your Safety Officer to be responsible for this. It is also that time of the year for Club nominations to be in and getting the PU101s completed. Make sure that the names, addresses, and meeting times and dates are correct and updated so as there are no mistakes in the new directory. PDG Barbara Sharpe and I attended the James Hargest College Leos Club meeting in February and we inducted 132 new members. In April I will be inducting more new members at the Wanaka Leo Club. Unfortunately these numbers can not be included in the total District membership count so I am still ASKING YOU to still keep ASKING 1. Our organisation has been described as one of the Worlds best kept secrets. We do need to let other people know what we are about and what we do. Regards D G Les. PhotosDonald Lamont.

Invercargill East Lions Malcolm Officer Memorial Bursary At the annual SIT awards night in December 2014 it was announced that Marco Lina was this year’s winner of the $1000 Malcolm Officer Memorial Bursary. Marco is an apprentice sheetmetal worker at Crown Sheetmetal and won the bursary for his achievements at SIT during the last year. Invercargill East Lions Club have been presenting the award for 20 years now in memory of their late member Malcolm Officer who tragically died in a motor accident. Pictured from left: Lion Rob Marshall,

Marco Lina, and Lion Rodger Millar.

Wanaka Upper Clutha The club joined the Wanaka and Districts Lions who were in charge of the catering for the recent clay bird shoot and a dedicated team of lions under the direction of Alison and Margaret made a great job of making the freshest sandwiches in town. Thanks go to those who helped with this task. I especially enjoyed the morning tea break and chat that followed when we tasted our fabulous sandwiches. We raised $700 from our efforts. A&P show took approx 350 hours of work. Great effort by members of the club, still a further report to come. A cheque for $523.60 was handed over to Delphina, a representative from Community Networks Holiday Program to be used for resources for the program. Delphi explained what the money would be used for identity arm bands and games.

Wyndham Your club is at the forefront of progress here, getting a discussion at the convention hopefully, and getting 202 to help clubs get to a point where they can show that they are protecting their members from harm’s way. The painting of the Tautuku lodge will be supported by six Wyndham Lions which is a good turnout in the end.

Cromwell The Lions 202F District Convention 2015, “Wine & Wheels”, has come and gone! The last two years of planning have paid divi-dends with our Club hosting a very memorable and enjoyable Convention weekend. There were many highlights during the Con-vention including our Friday night Guest Speaker, Sam Johnson, founder of the Student Volunteer Army in Christchurch after the earthquakes. Also, our guests enjoyed the Highlands Motorsport Park visit with the special “Hot Lap” in the Lambo by our own Alwyn Landreth, a very popular winner of the “early bird” draw! Greg W did a fantastic job at front of house as Convention Chair-man and showcased our Club very well! New Hyundai Community Van receiving excellent reviews – signage to be rectified

Lawrence At the February meeting Rob Hewitt explained that he was speaking on behalf of the Clutha Development Board. The initial cycle

trail concept was a 400km loop. To ensure success community involvement is essential. Current concept is a Lawrence to Waihola

extension. Rob gave a comprehensive account of cycle trails and their potential benefits. Financial support needed, currently have

$35000, need an additional $15000.

The March Guest Speakers were Lesley Elliot and Bill O’Brien from The Sophie Elliot Foundation.

Waiau Valley Parting Thought– I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t need to be one.

Clubs combining to hold trail ride to raise funds for diabetes research The West Otago Lions Club and the Blue Mountain Motorcycle Club are teaming up to hold the Spylaw Trail Ride as a fundraiser for the Spinal Cord Society of New Zealand’s research into treating and finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. › There’s two family loops with expert loops off them for the more experienced riders. It will be a good, family›orientated day out and there’s a peewee track for younger children to race around on. Motorcycle club member Hamish Murray said the trail ride, to be held on Allan and Karen Edward’s Keppoch Rd farm in Moa Flat, would be a good day out for riders of all ages and skill levels. ‘‘It’s a good area for riding and it is in support of a good cause. It’s in a remote area — there’s not many opportunities for people to go up and see that country land,’’ Mr Murray said. There would be great views of West Otago and towards Roxburgh as well as a section where riders would be looking down on the Clutha River, Mr Murray said. ‘‘There’s two family loops with expert loops off them for the more experienced riders. It will be a good, family-orientated day out and there’s a peewee track for younger children to race around on.’’ The motorcycle club usually advertised each year to see if any organisations wanted to run a trail ride fundraiser with it. ‘‘The Lions asked if we wanted to do it as a diabetes fundraiser and we chose that because it’s a good cause.’’ The money raised depended on the number of people who took part, but previous trail rides had raised about $4000 to $5000 for the organisation chosen. The Spylaw Trail Ride will be held on Saturday, March 21, and entries will be taken on the day. The event will be sign-posted from Edievale and State Highway 90 — Raes Junction to Tapanui. Sign-in is from 8am, gates open at 9.30am and the last rider out will be at 3pm. The cost is $45 for seniors and $25 for juniors (under 16), who must be accompanied by an adult. Bikes must have a spark arrester and be mechanically safe. Riders must wear a helmet and suitable footwear, and supply their own fuel. (Lets have a update how it went)

The Wine on Wheels Convention at Cromwell was a good event. Five members and partners attended. Also our members were keen to visit the Highlands Motor Park for a go kart race or a trip in the 200Kph Taxi ride. Everybody was dressed in character for the Great Gatsby Ball on the Saturday night, which also included a cake auction to raise money for the Type I Diabetes stem cell research project. Ten cakes were submitted. As president I had got the opportunity to bid on a cake that night. We bid on the cake brought in by the Gore River valley Lions club. ($600). West Otago Thanks to the many helpers who were available for the Black Gully celebrations ,the WO Vintage Club and the cone picking.-apparently our Lion gazebo had another outing! Today, approximately 30 elderly people from a Reids Tour bus group(Christchurch based) loved their time being shown around Tapanui. Thanks to those who made this possible. The program included Clive and his bagpipes during a walk at Whiskey Gully ,a luncheon and casual chat with Lions about our district, a guided bus ride and commentary around Tapanui by real estate agent Lion Bruce followed by a trip to Keith Parks freestall cowbarn.

Maniototo We had a busy day at the Maniototo A&P show supporting the Diabetes Type1 stem cell research team who travelled from Mataura and Dunedin to promote this project. They were able to explain what their research was about and $560-00 was collected on the day to go towards the research. The Noddy Train was also busy and many thanks to those who assisted with the day. The planning for the 4WD is progressing and Johnny Mul has the tracks sorted. The details will be sent out soon. Cromwell Lake Dunstan Big project coming up at the end of May, Cromwell Has Talent, this will require all hands on deck, the Mother's Day raffle at the beginning of May and collecting for the Child Cancer Foundation on the 20th and 21st March. And with these great ways to use up leftover wine, you never have to feel guilty about not finishing a bottle again. Make vinegar Instead of buying a bottle of red wine vinegar , make your own with leftover wine. Any wine that is going bad is on its way to becoming vinegar anyway. The plus side is once you get it started, you can keep adding old wine for a never-ending supply of fresh vinegar.

Invercargill Central Please remember to bring $5 for the Mothers Day Raffle if you have not already contributed Two skeletons used by the professor of anatomy found themselves stowed away in a dusty closet. After several weeks of boredom

Te Anau The Board also recommends that the club joins Kepler Lions to erect a public BBQ in Lions Park. Invercargill South Congratulations to Lion Bob Gibson with having reached 45 years of valuable service to Lions. A very notable achievement Bob. A very encouraging start to the Leo's year (Southland Girls) with approximately 100 girls turning up to the first meeting of the year. We needed to get more new member forms printed to cope with the demand. They now have a Secretary and a Treasurer as well as their President who was elected at the end of the last school year. We are now looking at a mountain of paper work to process these applications through to their inductions. Another first for quite a number of years is the fact that have a teacher support
