I like All Saints because we have great teachers. I also like that we go to church on Thursdays with the whole school. There are so many books in my classroom and in the library. I love learning to be a better reader and I like learning math. Lucy Jane Mecklenborg, Kindergarten

Why I Like All Saints School

Gym class is one thing I look forward to every week. Mrs. Caito has us play very fun games like football, basketball, steal the treasure, volleyball and many more! Lauren Kline, 5th grade

What I like most about learning Spanish at All Saints is that we have the best teacher, Señora. Also, we play lots of fun games like Bingo and Ritmo. I hope Señora never leaves. Lo que más me gusta de aprender Español en All Saints es que tenemos la mejor profesora: “Señora”. Tambien nosotros jugamos muchos juegos divertidos como Bingo y Ritmo. Yo espero que Señora nunca se vaya. Cristina Williams, 5th gr.

Library is so awesome because there are so many books and sometimes we even do puzzles! Mrs. Lewis is really nice, she will hold your favorite book for you even if you forget to return your old one. Grant Carle, Kindergarten

Music is fun because I like listening to music. I like playing games in music too!Nicholas Szewc, 1st Grade

My favorite part of art class this year is when we got to paint with bamboo sticks. I also loved when we got to use the pastels and paints.Maya Cadavid, 2nd Grade

I enjoy going to Spanish class because the atmosphere is very lively and supportive. Spanish class allows us students to express ourselves academically, but also have a couple of laughs during the 45 minute time frame. Senorita Davis encourages us to dive deep into the Spanish culture and embrace our ability to learn about different cultures.Jenna Plogmann, 8th grade

We Love Spanish Class: Nos Encanta la Clase de Español

Another reason I like All Saints is the school families; which are groups of students with at least one student from each grade. The school families meet once every month to do fun activities like scavenger hunts and Christmas caroling.

The last reason I like All Saints is because of Catholic Schools’ Week. During this week each year, we do a bunch of activities that remind us what is special about a Catholic education. One of them is the faculty vs Eighth grade volleyball game. It is fun to see the Eighth graders beat the faculty each year and also see the teachers enjoy themselves outside the classroom.

For those reasons that is why I think All Saints is a great school.

The fifth grade is learning a lot in computer class! On Learning.com, we are working on important lessons, like how to type properly. We also watch videos that teach us about algorithms and keyword searches. Mrs. McNerney is teaching us how to create a power point presentation. This will be used to create our country reports for Social Studies. I love computer class! Ethan Baird, 5th Gr.

Read what these students have been working on in school:

The second grade students are getting ready to learn how to write in cursive real soon. We are pretty excited about it.Grady Kroger, 2nd grade

On Saturday January 6, Miss Witte and Miss Lawless came to watch two of the third grade boys teams play basketball at back to back games at All Saints. We were so glad that they came to cheer us on. The third grade boys are having so much fun playing basketball!Cameron Kline, 3rd grade

This trimester in English we are fixing run-on sentences, so I’ll try to keep this short and sweet! We are just beginning to learn about Europe; meaning that when the test comes, we have the choice to either memorize all forty-six countries, or learn twenty countries and most of the bodies of water surrounding the country. So far January is off to a good start for 5th grade! Will Schimpf, 5th grade

STUDENT WRITERS WANTED If you are interested in writing for the Rock Review, please send an email to: [email protected].

In Fourth grade we are learning about birds. Like how they pick things up. We did this by using different utensils to pick up rice and grass. It was fun. Zach Doerger, 4th grade

In math we are working on multipli-cation, in reading we are working on reading strategies like using pictures and words when reading. I am excited because we are starting to learn about Australia and we have Australia Day coming up on Friday. We are learning about animals and their habitats and groups in science too! Cami Reisert, 3rd grade

In first grade, I learned about the world map and where all of the continents and oceans are on the map. In library, I learned how to browse through the books so I can find a book that I like. I really like Magic Tree House books!Evan Kwiatkowski, 1st grade

Currently in 5th grade in social studies we are learning about the Spanish conquistadors who came to the Americas around the 1500s. We will also be having a European country map test soon and doing a report on a European country. In art we are learning how to draw three dimensional rooms.Rachel Benne, 5th grade

I liked touring the Athenaeum, my favorite part was praying in the chapel with the seminarians. And we learned that Jesus loves us more than we can ever imagine! Maria Kilgore, 7th grade, Confirmation Retreat

I love math class! We keep practicing adding and subtracting. It is fun counting backwards to get to the right answer. I also loved being part of show and tell in Mrs. Hazel’s class.Ana Sofia Benavides Orta, 1st grade

In math, we’ve been doing new math problems. Adding! We use a plus sign and an equal sign. We find the sum.Noah Stulberg, Kindergarten

In math, we are learning to subtract with regrouping. In Religion, we learned about God’s love for all creation. We will be writing reports about famous African Americans.Elise Razzano, 2nd grade

In kindergarten we are learning sight words, word families and about a guy named Martin Luther King jr. We keep learning more about numbers and how to add them.Mary Hudek, Kindergarten

Ms. Witte, 3rd Grade Teacher: Written by Christian Luongo, 3rd Grade Ms. Witte grew up in Reading, Ohio. She went to college at UC. Ms. Witte wanted to be a teacher because she wanted to work with kids and didn’t want to feel like she was going to work when she woke up each morning. Ms. Witte likes to try new recipes and likes to pack lots of sauces in her lunch along with chicken and veggies. Ms. Witte is 30 years old and has one older brother who is a police officer. In her free time, she likes to dance, work out and play with her puppy. Ms. Witte likes to watch different Netflix movies and Disney movies. She ran cross country and track. Ms. Witte’s hobbies are to volunteer for a dog rescue team and spend time with her one-year old niece. We all love Ms. Witte in and out of school!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

What’s Happening Around All Saints?

CONGRATULATIONS to all 20 contestants in All Saints’ First Annual Spelling Bee! A big congrats goes to Maggie Sheil for her first place win and Ana Isabella Benevides Orta for coming in second place.

Rocks Sports Update: 7th Grade Girls Basketball By: Margo Mattes, 7th grade — The 2017-2018 All Saints girls basketball team is off to another strong start. Last year as 6th graders, we won all of our GCCYS games, including the year end tournament. We’re off to a 4-0 start this year and hope to finish the league undefeated again. With an average margin of victory of 30 points, this should be a reasonable goal. The team is coached by Zachery Keiner and his two assistant coaches, Anita Le and Lisa Skinner.

What makes our team special? We’re competitive. Each of us is on a Spring AAU team which is rare for a GCCYS team. Competing and playing hard is what we enjoy. It’s also a problem for our opponents.Missing from picture: Marissa Le

Nominating a Great Ohioan —By: Annie Arengo, 4th grade As a 2nd grader, I learned about writer, Virginia Hamilton. She was from Yellow Springs, Ohio, and made contribu-tions to children’s literature. Her stories helped explain lives of African Americans and events in history. She wrote more than 40 books and won every award given in children’s literature.

At the Books By The Banks Festival last fall, I met author Julie Rubini who wrote a biography about Virginia Hamilton. We enjoyed talking about Virginia together. A few weeks later, Mrs. Rubini emailed my mom to ask if I could help with a special project to nominate her for the “Great Ohioan” Award. I submitted a nomination to the Great Ohioan Committee.

In 2018, Virginia Hamilton was officially approved as a Great Ohioan. My class was invited to the Ohio Statehouse for the formal approval. I shared a few words about Ms. Hamilton in a special meeting, sat on the Speaker of the House’s chair in the House of Representatives and used the gavel.

Virginia Hamilton’s writing life and traditions are so creative. I hope that since she received this award, you’ll want to read stories in her honor.

Our 4th grade classes took a fun field trip to Columbus, OH. We got to visit the Ohio State-house Museum, and take a tour of the Statehouse and The Ohio Supreme Court. We did a mock trial and learned what happens during a jury trial. It was such a fun field trip!Julia Buckley, 4th Grade

BIBLE BOWL By: Sam Westendorf, 6th gradeBible Bowl is a fun religious club for 6th graders, which is lead by Sr. Dorothy, with the help of Mrs. McGill. We study 10 books of the Bible and answer questions about them.

The club meets every Wednesday during lunch and recess. I have learned a lot about the Bible and our Catholic faith. I hope you will join when you are in sixth grade!

(Bible Bowl parent update: ‘They worked hard, and did a great job! They placed 6th out of 7 teams. Although they didn’t place as high as they wanted, they showed tremendous effort!’)

The New Nut Free PolicyBy: Grace Ravasio, 2nd GradeThe new nut free policy means that I don’t have to eat something different from my friends when they have birth-days at school. I can now eat all the birthday treats with everyone else and I am glad that All Saints did that!
