Innovation offers a means perhaps the only means by whicha high-skill, high-wage economy cansuccessfully compete with high-skill, lower-wage economies without reducing its
standard of living.
Low-wage countries are themselves investingin education, research, and businessinnovation, so the challenge for the UnitedStates is to innovate at a faster rate than its rivals .

Though there will be an increased demand forskills in science, technology, engineering, andmath, there will be even higher demands forcreativity, invention, and innovation .
So how do we best prepare our students for afuture of work that does not yet exist, careersthat have not yet been invented, an economythat prizes things not yet created
To prepare for the Age of Innovation we mustall become better designers We must applyboth thinking and tinkering.

Farmers can earn more moneyby preserving their food longer.Northern Nigeria is animpoverished region where
people survive on subsistencefarming. With no electricity, and therefore no refrigeration, perishable foods spoil withindays. Such spoilage causesdisease and loss of income forneedy farmers, who are forcedto sell their produce daily. Justadd water in between the twopots. Variation of Pot in Pot Refrigerator
37
Pot in Pot type Refrigerator
This is Emily Cummins. At age21 she developed a variationof the pot-in-pot cooler.
Her version uses two metalliccylinders, one inside theother, between which alocally-sourced material suchas sand or wool is packedtightly before being soakedwith water.
When the fridge is placed in awarm environment, the sunsenergy causes the outer partof the fridge to sweat. Waterevaporates from the sand orwool and heat energy istransferred away from theinner cylinder, therebycooling it.
