Many AdWords users fail to include negative keywords as part of their campaign – and they are missing out on an opportunity to improve performance and save costs. It’s important to include negative keywords in your AdWords campaign so that people who aren’t looking for what your company offers aren’t shown your ad. It’s a way to increase the return on your AdWords spend by only targeting interested customers.

As an example, if your company offers a paid service, it’s a good idea to have ‘free’ as a negative keyword. This will exclude people who are only looking for a free version of the service you offer. For example, if your company charged for its relationship counseling services, you could choose ‘free relationship counseling’ as negative keywords.

How to determine your negative keywords

Running a search terms report is a good way to generate some ideas for your negative keywords. A search terms report is a way to see all the searches that led to an ad click. You can get this report in AdWords via the Keywords tab – set a date range of about 2 weeks and select the keywords you want a report on.

Click ‘Keyword details’ and ‘selected’ and this will get you the report. When the search terms appear, you might like to check the boxes for the keywords you want to add to your negative list. Select the keywords and key-phrases that don’t apply to your business, for example those that include words like ‘free’. Then click ‘Add as negative keyword’ to finish off.

Be careful not to generate too big a list of negative keywords, or your ad will only be shown to a very small number of people. Also make sure you don’t include your actual keywords – or no-one will see your ad!
