This year it is my honor and privilege to serve as your Mayor alongside my esteemed colleagues. A couple rewarding

years have passed since I joined the City Council in 2015, and throughout that time I have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with Diamond Bar residents, businesses and City staff. I look forward to expanding community relationships in my new role and encourage our residents’ and businesses’ input.

The City Council and I are extremely proud of what is in store for 2018. While continuing the tradition of excellence, we will maintain the highest of standards while working to achieve each of the City’s Strategic Plan goals. Those goals include the responsible stewardship of public resources, having an open, engaged and responsive government and maintaining a safe, sustainable and healthy community. This year we will be welcoming new businesses to the City, including Ross, Coffee Bean, and the Habit to the Diamond Bar Ranch Shopping Center. Additionally, as a part of the City’s commitment to keeping residents, businesses and the general public informed we will be launching a new City website. The new website will offer increased functionality, enhance the public’s access to information, and strengthen City communication.

The City’s upcoming special events started with our annual Winter Snow Fest that took place place at Pantera Park. This family fun festival featured four snow hills, a snow play area, children’s crafts, game booths, food booths, entertainment and lots of fun. If you missed it, join the community at next years Winter Snow Fest.

As always, the City Council welcomes your comments, con-cerns, or questions. You can reach me or any other Council Member by calling 909.839.7010 or by using the links to our email addresses located on the “Council Members” page of the City website at www.diamondbarca.gov.

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON !

Wanda Tanaka Rides on Lions Rose Parade Float

Diamond Bar resident and Lion member, Wanda Tanaka, was invited

to ride in the Rose Parade on the Lions Float "Preserving Our Environment" on New Year's Day. The Lions float paid tribute to two of the clubs' Centennial projects: Engaging Our Youth and Pre-serving Our Environment.

How appropriate since she and Lion Jack Tanaka had worked with the youth of Chaparral Middle School Leos Club for 19 years and with the Diamond Bar High School Leos Club for 18.

The Leos at Diamond Bar High School, adhere to the “Preserving our Environ-

ment” theme as they created a recycling program at the school in which proceeds are donated to the Diamond Bar High Special Needs Program.

Wanda rode on the float in memory of Jack's dedication and leadership of the Lions. January 1, 2017 was Jack's last time at the Float Barn. The theme for the 2018 Tournament of Roses Parade is "Making a Difference". This is a way to honor and celebrate all of the people in our communities who quietly and without desire for reward or recognition, act in selfless, generous and kind ways to aid or benefit others. It’s about the human acts of kindness that enrich the lives of

others and are the source of inspiration, hope, joy and optimism for all of us. Lions Jack and Wanda are perfect examples of the 2018 theme.

The Diamond Bar social media group, The Original Dia-mond Bar Buzz, recognized Maximilian Zavala, as the

2017 Buzzer of the Year for positive vibes, inspiration, Autism Awareness, supporting local businesses, helping others and most importantly by just being Max.

The ceremony was held at Fusion 2 any 1 Sushi & Roll located in the Albertsons shopping center. Many members from the Buzz came together to show their support and meet the inspiring Buzzer of the Year. Maximilian was awarded with a certificate, a T-Shirt and gift certificates.

“I wanna thank all of the Diamond Bar community for voting and nominating me for 2017 Buzzer of the Year,” states Maxi-milian. “I had a lot of fun and met some new Buzzers.”

Maximilian is an advocate for Autism Awareness and hosted his first fundraiser last year at Mr. G’s Pizza to raise funds for

TACA, Talk About Curing Autism. With the support from the community and Mr. G’s Pizza, he was able to raise over $700 for the TACA organization.

Autism currently affects 1 in every 68 children. It is estimated there are over 3 million people in the United States alone with autism. April is Autism Awareness Month and April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day.

National Autism Awareness Month represents an excellent opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year.

To learn more about autism visit www.autism-society.org.

The Windmill congratulates Maximilian Zavala.

18PUSD News

Pomona Unified School District (PUSD) had an incredible 2017 with

many accomplishments to recognize.

PUSD won its second District of Distinc-tion award for its outstanding after-school program, The Learning Connection. The District now has the Pomona Admin-istrative Clear Credential program and can provide Tier II credentials to their administrators. Eighteen of PUSD schools won awards for their Positive Behavior Intervention & Support programs sup-porting their students. The high schools are listed among the Best High Schools in the Nation. They have been named to the Renaissance National Honor Roll, the California Honor Roll, and among

Imagine Nation's 50 Top Schools in the world. But equally important as these recogni-tions, is that "Aha!" moment of learning that takes place daily in classrooms across the District. It is seen when a child first grasps the concept of how to read, or solves a difficult problem, or because of their teacher, become inspired to select the careers that will open opportunities throughout their lives.

“It is said that sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes memory,” states Superintendent, Richard Martinez. “In the coming year, let us realize that our words and actions

echo throughout not only our lives, but those of our students.”

PUSD has a lot to be thankful for and 2018 will be another year of success in learning and recognitions.

Diamond Bar High is a well-estab-lished leader in student achievement

in the state and nation. Staff members are dedicated to provid-ing personalized educational programs, challenging students to discover their unique gifts, and supporting each student to realize their potential. Last year, the campus launched a Well-ness Center to provide an extra layer of counseling support and wellness educa-tion services. And in just 15 months, the school’s pioneering efforts have been validated. The California School Boards Association (CSBA) selected Diamond Bar High

Ring the Bell!Diamond Bar High Wins Golden Bell Award

to receive the prestigious 2017 Golden Bell Award for its innovative efforts in addressing the wellness needs of the over 3,000 students on campus. The heart of the Wellness Center is helping students learn to cope with everyday problems, according to coor-dinator Sandy Davis. The center services approximately 30 stu-dents weekly with the motto “Empowering Student Wellness from Within.”

This year, the growing program is staffed by 23 student interns who can relate peer-to-peer on most challenging teen issues. These wellness consultants receive an additional 30 hours of intensive training, as well as earning Mental Health First Aide certification. The center offers stress and anxiety relief, progressive relaxation exercises, and guided meditation designed to help students reduce stress. The Wellness Program also garnered the 2017 California Gold Ribbon and 2016 Inspired Changemaker awards by Facebook and Yale’s Center for Emotional Intelligence.
