WHY TEACH ENTREPRENEURSHIP?
In the U.S., Small Business Is BIG!
28 million small businesses account for 54% of all U.S. sales.
The number of small businesses in the U.S. has increased 49% since 1982.
Small businesses provide 55% of all jobs and 66% of net new jobs since 1970.
Since 1990, big business eliminated 4M jobs while small businesses added 8M new jobs.
Entrepreneurship Stimulates Job Growth
New research shows that the country’s rate of new
business creation plunged more than
30 PERCENT
during the economic collapse and has been slow to
recover following the “Great Recession,” resulting in
fewer new jobs.
Industry Wants Graduates with Entrepreneurial Mindset
In a 2015 Wall Street Journal survey of nearly 900
Executives:
• 92 PERCENT said soft skills are equally important
or more important than technical skills
• 89 PERCENT said they have a very hard time or
somewhat difficult time finding people with the
requisite skills.
WELCOME TO THE NEW NFTE
Our Mission
NFTE activates the
entrepreneurial mindset
and builds startup skills
in youth from under-
resourced communities
to ensure their success
and to create a more
vibrant society.
“NFTE taught me how to create
something from nothing. I learned
that I can create my own
opportunities and I can be an
innovator.”
-- Anthony Halmon

• Break into small groups (3-5 members). Each group will receive the same number of common household items (paper plate, paper clips, straws, etc.).
• You will have 10 minutes to collaborate and create a brand new product or service using only the materials provided.
• Once your Minimum Viable Product (i.e., prototype) is complete, your group should come up with a brief marketing campaign:o What is your product’s name and what does it do?o How is it different from other products?o What problem does it solve?o Why would anyone want to buy it?
